Enda was once again floored as when it came time to draft the teams for her least favorite gym activity, she was actually chosen third overall by Trish Pierce of all people. Aoi was the one who convinced her to do so even though it was crystal clear she didn't want to for her lack of athletic ability.
The other team was being captained by the starting Kicker of the football team, Sean Mars. He immediately set out to pick as many of his grid iron teammates as possible and as the draft continued it became more and more evident that no one really wanted Heather on their team which was surprising considering she was always one of the first people chosen.
Even as the average Joes got picked, the nerds, the band geeks, and freaks, she was still waiting to be selected. Eventually Trish chose Patsy just to avoid picking Heather herself and by default she had to go to the other team which made her the odd teen out. No one had picked her and that fact almost fried Enda's brain.
Ms. Nuvelle gave everyone a cheap jersey to identify the teams. The geek girl was on the red team while her rival was on the blue team. Enda couldn't help but feel nervous as painful memories of getting beamed in the face by Heather came roaring to the surface. She'd even broken her nose once with one of those red balls. There was red everywhere.
While she relived those memories, Ruthie was also left stunned by the fact that the former school idol went undrafted. She was even receiving some annoyed looks from some of her teammates and others were just flat out ignoring her. If she could've retreated into her jersey, then she probably would've.
Patsy tried her best to give the tall girl a small smile and wave, but she could tell Heather was uncomfortable being all alone on the other team with people who hated her guts. Unfortunately, there wasn't much she could do here, which meant they would both just have to tough it out until class ended.
"Edna? Are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Ruthie asked.
"You mean Heather all alone? Yeah." Edna responded.
"Even still, we better keep our eyes peeled." Her best friend warned.
The geek gulped nervously. "You don't have to tell me that."
Ms. Nuvelle drew the conversations to a close as she blew her whistle. "Alright! The rules here are simple, if you get hit with a ball anywhere on the body then you're out! If you catch an opposing player's ball, then they're out! The game continues until an entire team is knocked out. If for some reason we have a tie, we'll go into sudden death with three players representing the team! If we still can't decide a winner after that then you all suck! No crossing the sides for any reason or you'll be disqualified! Balls are out, let the games begin!"
The couch blew her whistle and the game was on. Right away people ran to grab a ball from the line and began launching them at each other full force. Edna cried and screamed as did her best to avoid getting pegged in the face. She could even hear one boy on the other side shouting, "Aim for the glasses!"
"Look out!" Ruthie shouted as she jumped in front of a ball for her friend and caught it.
"Rollins! You're out!" Ms. Nuvelle shouted.
The boy named Rollins cursed under his breath before heading to the bleachers with the others who didn't make it.
"Are you okay?" Ruthie asked her ginger friend.
"I'm fine." Edna breathed.
"Grea-" Ruth's words were soon cut off by a bright red dodgeball that seemed to come out of nowhere. It caught the poor girl right in the temple and sent her into a spinning frenzy as the ball left her hands and she crumpled to the ground.
"Ruthie!" Enda cried. She would've been next if another ball didn't swat the one aimed at her head out of the air.
She turned to find her savior was none other than Patsy Smith. "Keep your head in the game geek."
"Right." Edna reluctantly nodded. Her eyes then settled on the ball that was rolling on the floor.
She followed the little red ball through the carnage while it traveled over the line and stopped right in front of a pair of beat-up old Converses. Slowly a pair of hands reached down to retrieve the ball and is her vision climbed higher and higher, the more her breath started to grow unstable.
Heather picked up the ball.
Heather "Freaking" Miles.
World War 2 flashbacks of getting hit every which way by the blonde's throwing arm began to set in and once the two locked eyes she could visibly see the former school idol was also breathing heavy.
"Oh shit." Enda whimpered. She wasn't ready to see the school nurse again so soon.
