Lucy would have been content to remain in Kouta’s embrace until she wasted away from lack of food or water. There was no place she’d rather be than in his arms. Kouta, however, finally released her and Lucy, very slowly, did likewise. Kouta pulled off the blanket covering them and stood, he helped Lucy to her feet.
“………..Lucy, things are going to be hard for a little while." Kouta wasn't going to lie to her, she deserved to know the truth, "The others might look at you strangely at first, treat you like you're an outsider. Please don't hold it against them. It's just that we've all lost a very close friend." Lucy's face remained stoic but his words saddened her. Kouta was, of course, speaking of Nyuu. That part of her was gone. She'd pretty much fully recovered from the head injury that had brought about the defenseless, naive, and partially mute girl. It was obvious to Lucy that Kouta, along with everyone else in the house, regretted the loss of innocent, playful, Nyuu. Now all that was left was her true self, Lucy, a colder and much more distant persona. Disregarding the fact that the two personalities had inhabited the same body for a brief period, the two of them couldn't have been more different. Would the member's of Kouta's 'family' eventually accept her as one of their own despite being a completely different person? Would they, could they? Lucy wasn't sure but, then again, she really didn't care. The boy in front of her on the other hand..... It pained her that the loss of Nyuu hurt Kouta so much but he accepted the new her (the real her) without any hesitation. He knew Lucy, she wasn't cute loveable Nyuu but she was still his long lost childhood friend.
Lucy's spirits lifted the more she contemplated her relationship with him. Kouta would get over the loss of Nyuu, the others would come to accept her or, at least, they'd stay out her way. And then eventually....... eventually...... Kouta would forgive her and they'd..................... No. Since leaving the facility so many wondrous unbelievable things had happened to her. She'd escaped from her holding cell, been reunited with the boy she loved (though to her that word only wouldn't be enough to describe the feelings and emotions she had for Kouta), and not only that but he had accepted her into his home. So many unbelievable wondrous things had occurred over the past few weeks but, despite all that, not even Lucy could pretend that Kouta might one day forgive her for the....... train incident. What she had done was.......... unforgivable. All she had to do was extend a vector, insert it into his brain, and cause the memory to disappear forever. She could do it, she knew she could. And then he wouldn't feel so sad anymore, his memories of his father and sister's demise would never again haunt him. It would only take a few seconds. The memory would be gone and the truth buried, and than he'd be all hers. But she wouldn't, couldn't do that to Kouta. Even if he had decided to hate her she still wouldn't have been able to bring herself to tamper with his mind. All these thoughts and emotions passed through Lucy yet her face remained blank, "In time they'll come around. They just need a little while to get to know the real you." Kouta insisted, "The girl I know. But until then they might be...." The boy shrugged, not able to find the words.
"I understand." Lucy reassured him. They'd avoid her, that was fine; she was used to being alone. Yet Kouta's presence had awoken a long dormant hunger in her, one that didn't reside in the pit of her merciless stomach. The others might not want to have anything to do with her, and that was fine, but if she were to ever lose Kouta again Lucy doubted she'd have the will to keep living.
Kouta smiled at her sadly, "Thank you for understanding. Just..... just remember I'll always be there for you....... if you're feeling lonely and you need someone to talk to. I'll be there....." Lucy smiled, her vision became slightly blurry and she realized, much to her surprise, that she was on the verge of tears. She quickly regained her composure, ".......Now, how about a little breakfast?” Kouta finally asked.
“That sounds good.” Lucy murmured, eyeing him shyly as he extended his hand. Lucy took it into her own and, hand in hand, they left the room.
Her hand felt so soft and delicate in his palm. Kouta knew it was a farce however. Though she lightly clutched his fingers there was a power there just below the surface. Something you wouldn't even notice unless you knew it was there to begin with. Kouta knew that, if Lucy chose to, her small seemingly fragile hand could apply enough pressure to splinter and snap every last bone in his fingers. But he knew he had nothing to fear from her. He trusted her, maybe more than anyone. Surprising considering she had been the one to.................
He didn't like to think about it, he wouldn't think about. That was the past and there was nothing he could do to change it. Besides, deep down Kouta knew Kanae wouldn't want him dwelling on her death, consumed by guilt and regret for the rest of his life. He knew she'd want him to be happy. His father too. Lucy had experienced horrors he probably couldn't even comprehend at the orphanage, and later, at the facility. Society had perverted her but he knew, deep down, she was sad yet kind and gentle girl who only really wanted friendship. Her actions weren't something he could ever forget, but maybe one day he'd be able to look her in the eyes and tell her.......
The two walked side by side silently. Lucy had to fight the urge to stop in her tracks and, once again, wrap her arms around the boy. His warmth, his touch, the peace of mind his presence gave her, were like nothing she'd ever experienced. It would be hard to, in the future, keep from sneaking into his room at night and cuddling up next to him. Thankfully the slight swell in her belly had disappeared by the time he had woken up, if it hadn't been things might have played out differently. There was no longer any sign of the would be rapist. Her diclonious stomach had worked quickly to break him down into a nutritious mush. Sucked into her intestines the man had been distributed as nutrients to all parts of her body via her bloodstream. Despite her late night snack Lucy was prepared to eat again. She always had an appetite. It had almost cost Kouta his life when they had first met
Yuka leaned over the simmering pot and stared at its contents. She drew back before the rising steam could dampen her hair, “Hmmm, I think the miso soup could use some more green onion.” Taking one from the cupboard she set it on a cutting board and began slicing away, "Mayu how is that rice coming along?"
"It'll be done before you know it!" The former homeless girl giggled.
Lucy and Kouta entered the room, "Hey everyone." Kouta called.
"Hey sleepy head, I was just about ready to come into your room and kick you in the back. You could have helped us get breakfast on the table you know." Yuka complained.
"Sorry. So, is everyone ready for school? Nana, you done with your homework?" Like they had tried to do with Nyuu once before they had snuck Nana into school with Mayu, except with much better results, "Yep! Mayu helped me with a lot of it though." Nana was a fast learner and it wasn't her time away from society and school so much as it was Lucy's presence and ominous demand that had caused her to lose her concentration.
"Are you going to be okay here alone?" Kouta asked Lucy.
"Hey, how about she comes with us?" Mayu asked excitedly, bouncing on her toes.
"I'm not sure that's such a good idea........ at least not for now." Kouta explained.
"I agree." Yuka spoke up, "We can't forget what happened last time we tried to take her to school with us." Kouta nodded silently.
Nana watched Lucy silently without saying a word.
............................................................................ .......
After they had left Lucy occupied herself by doing chores around the house and strolling through the courtyard, admiring nature. She wouldn't be able to leave the courtyard or the house in broad daylight for quite some time, not while there were people still hunting for her, but it was far more spacious and beautiful than anything she'd seen in her cell. She would still need to leave from time to time. To feed and keep her hunger in check. Nana had been able to suppress it, and Lucy believed maybe she could too...... but it would be better not to have the craving at all. Besides she only planned to feed on criminals (scum even by human standards). Hopefully Kouta wouldn't hold it against her if, when, the truth came out.
Later in the afternoon she returned to her room for a light nap......... and had the dream again. It was a terrifying dream, even for someone as battle hardened as Lucy. The dream had become more and more frequent. It had probably started around the same time she'd gotten her head injury and Kouta had reentered her life. It was very surreal, and with each new dream it seemed to become somehow more substantial. It had gotten to the point where it was hard to tell if it was even a dream anymore, or if it was something else.
She was back on the train. Kanae, Kouta's sister, lay chopped in two on the ground. Blood was pouring out everywhere. It was on the floor, the seats, the walls, even on Kouta's face. Lucy couldn't stop herself. Her vectors moved as if they had a will of their own, ensnaring Kouta's father as the young child screamed bloody murder. She tried to stop, tried with all her strength to alter it, but the dream was a cruel one. The truth was set in stone and it wouldn't let her see anything else besides the truth. Once again she would be forced to watch the gristly deaths of Kouta's family. The boy's father was working his way down her throat now and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She just swallowed reflexively dragging him deeper and deeper towards his inevitable demise. She fought with every ounce of strength she could muster but he kept sliding in past her lips, down, down, down, straight to hell.
'Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!' It was a mental scream, one that didn't come out from the lips of the animated puppet who shared her likeness. Yet something strange happen. Something that had never happened before in her reoccurring nightmare. She somehow regained a slight, minuscule, amount of control. Not enough to govern her body but enough to stop her ravenous mouth. The man's descent stopped mid swallow. There he was waist deep into Lucy, just waiting to be finished off, yet somehow Lucy had stopped the process.
Lucy stared down into Kouta's terrified eyes. She wanted to comfort him. To crack her head against the floor and quiver there in a heap begging for forgiveness. But she still had a full grown human man lodged in her throat and she still wasn't in full control of her body. All she could do was stare.
Lucy awoke from her nap in a cold sweat. The dream had seemed so real. As if it was really happening all over again. As if she had somehow traveled back in....... No, she wasn't thinking rationally. That was impossible. She couldn't somehow change her past and, regardless of how real it had all seemed, a dream is a dream.
........................................................................
School had just let out. Kouta and Yuka had made it back first; they attended high school while the two younger girls attended a nearby middle school. Kouta went into the house while Yuka went about watering the garden. The two girls came running into the courtyard laughing.
"Have a good day you two?" Yuka smiled.
"You bet! Today we got to go to the planetarium! Nana and I have to write a report on Saturn and its rings."
"Well have fun with that."
"Mayu, you can start without me. I want to speak with Yuka for a bit." Nana's smile disappeared as she turned towards the older girl.
"Sure, just hurry up!" Mayu rushed inside.
"What is it Nana?" Yuka asked curious.
Nana bit her lip. She had told Mayu the truth already and she knew Kouta knew after what had happened on the bridge. No one had told Yuka though. It wasn't fair to keep her in the dark. She didn't know Lucy had been the one to kill Kouta's family but she did know Lucy was a killer. It was a secret Yuka deserved to know, one that she needed to know. After last night Nana couldn't be sure if Lucy's murderous and jealous nature wouldn't take control of her and make her doing something terrible and unretractable. Yuka had to be aware of what Lucy really was, for her own safety.
Nana explained rapidly, the words tumbling out of her as if a dam had burst. Yuka's eye's widened.
“………..Lucy, things are going to be hard for a little while."
