“It’s working…” Kouta murmured. The old grandfather clock Nyuu had once taken apart began to chime.
Wanta’s barking continued. Kouta turned to stare at the shadowy silhouette. Who could it be; the mailman? As he approached the shadow became more pronounced. It was thin, feminine. Kouta’s breath caught in his throat. When he was directly in front of the door Wanta stopped barking. Slowly he brought his hand upward and set in on the screen. The shadow on the other side did the same. His hand and that of the shadow’s intertwined. It all felt so familiar, as if he’d known the person behind the doors for year. Kouta slowly removed his fingers from the door and let his hand fall limply to his side. He remembered to breath and exhaled softly, half sighing. Slowly he pulled back the door…….. and there she was.
“…….. Nyuu.”
And there she was, only it wasn’t Nyuu, not completely. The eyes spoke volumes, it was Lucy. Only when those guys gazed at Kouta they lost much of their harshness. Lucy looked towards the ground, blushing slightly, ashamed. By doing so she exposed the top of her head to him. Two bloody stumps were all that remained….. at least for now.
“Oh Nyuu.” He gently took her arms.
“Kouta….” …….. She shouldn’t have come. Not after what she’d put him through. Slicing his little sister in two and devouring his father. It was a painful memory, Lucy rarely regretted killing. In this instance though she’d give anything to go back in time and prevent their murders. Kouta had been the only one to ever show her any genuine affection and she’d paid him back by butchering his family. Tears started to well up in her eyes, it was an unfamiliar sensation.
“I’m…… glad you came back. Come inside, we were just about to have soumen. We’ve already got a bowl set out for you ……. Your rooms the way you left it so you can just move right back in.”
“I don’t understand.” She’d been hoping for those words, hoping that though Kouta couldn’t forgive her he still cared about her. Being able to return to him, it was something she’d dreamt about for years. But though she had dreamt of it, begged for it, prayed for it, she still couldn’t understand it. She’d used her vectors and her stomach to cause her childhood friend such pain. So why?
“What’s there to understand? It’s like I told you on the steps. Nothing’s changed since then. I meant those words, that hug, everything. I’ve gotten my memories back, that’s true. I….. can’t pretend nothing ever happened. But I understand you’ve had many painful memories too. I can’t imagine what horrors you endured since we parted ways….. I’ve felt empty for a long time. When Nyuu washed up on that beach, though I didn’t recognize her, she felt like an old friend. You filled a void in me, you still do. I can’t forget what you did… but….. we’ll take baby steps, one at a time. And when we’re both ready we can have a heart to heart. Lets not worry about that now though….. The truth is, I’m just happy you’ve come home.”
“Kouta.” Lucy’s usual harsh monotone was gone, replaced by a voice filled with emotion. She let her hands slip out of his grasp and around his waist. He pulled her close in a gentle embrace, “…. Lets get inside, lunch is getting cold.”
“Y- yeah.” Lucy sniffed, she was finally ‘home’ for the first time in her life. Here, at the Inn, with Kouta.
Nanu chewed at her noodles thoughtfully. She thought she had sensed something, another diclonius…… but it was a very faint passing sensation. Mayu dug into her meal and Yuka was finishing up at the kitchen counter. They seemed oblivious to it, maybe it was just her imagination? Just then she felt it, Lucy. She looked up, there at the entrance to the room was Kouta and…….. Lucy, not Nyuu. She couldn’t detect Nyuu. And those eyes, they weren’t Nyuu’s eyes. She just let the unchewed pasta sit in her mouth. Lucy had taken her limbs… but she was close to Kouta, and the night papa died Nyu had saved her life by greedily gulping down the scientist who had a gun fixed on her head.
“…….. Hello Lucy.” She said quietly.
“….. Hello.”
Mayu and Yuka looked up and simultaneously cried out, “Nyuu!”
Mayu ran up and hugged her. Lucy didn’t return it but she didn’t push her away. Truth be told she had grown somewhat fond of the orphan. When she and Nana had been fighting it was Mayu who stopped her from once more maiming the young diclonius. She’d actually reverted back into Nyuu.
“Oh Nyuu!...... !!!!!!!! What happened?” She saw the bloody stumps on Nyuu’s head, “We need to get a warm towel and something to keep that from getting infected!”
“I’m on it!” Yuka hurried out of the room.
Yuka…….. she was the girl that……….. No, Lucy couldn’t blame her for that. She had to take responsibility for her own actions. But still….. she didn’t like her. After Kouta’s cousin learned their was another side to Nyuu, a far more jealous articulate one, the feeling would be mutual. She could vaguely remember Kouta getting slapped for showering ‘Nyuu’ with too much attention, “Don’t bother. This wound, I got it several days ago.”
“Nyuu?” Yuka was surprised. She’d rarely heard the girl say anything besides her name besides, “yes” and the occasional, “I like Kouta!”.
Lucy looked away, not making eye contact.
“Ummm…..” Kouta wasn’t sure how to introduce her, ‘Yeah, this is an old friend of mine. Reason that I didn’t mention it sooner was because she lost her memory and I forgot she ever existed. Funny story, she’s the one who killed my family and caused me to have memory loss and a year of hospitalization. It was because she saw you with me at the festival Yuka. So, who’s up for some soumen?’ Yeah, that wasn’t an introduction he was too keen on giving.
“Nyuu’s gotten her memory back.” Kouta finally choked out.
“Wow…. That’s…. great.” Yuka had all but forgotten about the girl’s gaping head wounds.
“That’s wonderful!” Mayu gave the girl another hug, “and you came back here. Don’t have anywhere to go? That’s fine! Now we can be one big family again!”
Wanta’s barking continued. Kouta turned to stare at the shadowy silhouette. Who could it be; the mailman? As he approached the shadow became more pronounced. It was thin, feminine.
