Was that day going to be different from all those other days in the years before? Tifa already knew the answer as she slowly opened her eyes, waking up from her sleep. Even the night was the same as always...the same nightmares she was always having, those past three years. She rubbed her eyes carefully, and they were quickly getting used to the light that was shining through the window and into her room. One could have thought there was a true angel lying in that bed, with the light shining on Tifa in her pure nightdress in a way that made her seem holy. And perhaps she was, at least her actions in her entire life and her lifestyle itself would have been worth of her being called an angel, a saint. But...her situation was not what she deserved. Sure, she returned to Nibelheim, to her old (rebuilt) house, after she and her friends had defeated Sephiroth and saved the world. And yet she now realized her loneliness...
Tifa could not deny that those last three years had been empty and worthless. On the day her home village was burned down by Sephiroth, her life practically lost any meaning to her, for everyone and everything dear to her had been taken away from her cruelly and ruthlessly. Her home...her family, or her father, to be precise...and her best friend, Glenn. That image of him being slaughtered by Sephiroth was haunting her ever since she witnessed his death on Mt. Nibel. No day has gone by when she hasn´t thought and dreamed of him. And although her memories of him were most precious to her, although he had provided her with something special all those years they had spent together, her dreams of him were nightmares. It was always the same dream, haunting her every night. His death by the hands of Sephiroth, with her standing behind them and not being able to save her dear friend, over and over again...and the more she she had to go through that scene, the more she blamed herself for for his death, for not having been able to protect him at that moment.
Glenn had always been there for her; something she would never forget and would always be thankful for. Except for her parents, she had never experienced such kindness and care from any other person. Yes, she might have been very popular in Nibelheim, for she was a kind and caring (not to mention beautiful and sometimes lively) person herself, always acting friendly toward others. But...no one cared about her the way Glenn did. He really was interested in her, the things she liked and disliked, her hobbies, her fears and her dreams. Sometimes she would talk with him for nearly half an hour, with him remaining silent and listening carefully all the time. Then, only a few words by him were enough to cheer her up, to release her from whatever grief was upon her. The words he said, the way he spoke, all this hit her deep inside her soul, making her sorrows fade away. Such kindness really meant a lot to her, especially in the years after her mother´s death.
So, Tifa spent as much time with him as possible, and not a single day passed when they were not together. But amidst all the kindness he showed her, Tifa also gave Glenn something precious and unforgettable. Much to her surprise, a great person like Glenn has always been a calm and shy person. Sometimes he even seemed to be timid, especially near Tifa herself. She never understood why Glenn was lacking self confidence from time to time, as she thought that there was no reason for him to be whatsoever. In her opinion, a kind and gentle person like him, someone who did so many good deeds in his life - especially concerning herself - deserved to be happy and self confident, so did all she could in order to show him her gratitude and how much she actually liked (and likes) him for who he was. And thanks to her cheerful personality, her honesty, her understanding of his very character and her kindness (above all), she succeeded in her attempts. Even amidst the most desperate and sorrowful hour, she could manage to make him smile again. to her joy, he sometimes even showed her his own gratitude by hugging her gently. That was not only a wonderful feeling for Tifa, but also the ultimate proof that he was able to overcome his sorrows with her help.
Seeing this, it would appear that Glenn and Tifa were the perfect couple, for both could help each other to break through the fog of pain and agony surrounding both of their lives at times, and last but not least because they simply liked each other a lot. Deep inside, Tifa knew that this was true, but his death affected her in a more horrible than she originally thought. The loss of her friend already affected her in crucial ways and was too much for her to bear, but there was a feeling of guilt that still remained, even after 3 years, and it was nagging at her soul. It was, to be precise, because she thought that she did not show him her true feelings, resulting in her believing that she failed him on that fateful day.
And only now, three years after his death, Tifa realized that the loss of him was a far more painful experience for her as she finally understood her true feelings for him. She indeed loved him, and she still did three years later; and she always knew it to be true. From the moment she met Glenn for the first time, it was him her true feelings belonged to, to him and no one else, except for her parents in a different way. Not even Cloud had at least partially gained her love. What she did for him in the Lifestream might have been heroic, but that´s what she would have done for all her friends. It´s one of her indistinguishable character traits, after all: being there for friends in need of help, with their safety above her own, as she was a selfless and brave girl.
And yet...despite her love for this shy and lovable boy, she never told Glenn. She knew that she would always regret this, in view of the thought about how their lives would have turned out to be otherwise. Glenn at least knew that she liked him, but knowing about love would have surely served to provide him with more self confidence and to let him forget his sorrows once and for all. For Tifa knew exactly that Glenn loved her dearly. It was easy to see, though: the way he was usually behaving near her did indicate that his feelings for Tifa went beyond mere friendship. Yet he was too shy to tell her, and she realized that it would have been up to her, solving this problem as she was more courageous in that regard. Of course, Glenn would have never even dreamed of Tifa´s love belonging to him, so just a few words by Tifa; revealing what she really felt for him, would have been enough to change the course of fate for both of their lives.
But it was too late. Glenn was dead, because she could not save him. Now she would have to live with these thoughts and feelings of guilt, having failed her friend in two most saddening ways. Now one must mention that Glenn would have never allowed Tifa to even think like that, because it just wasn´t true, not in the least bit. Especially not for Glenn, her greatest admirer.
Although she had found new friends like Yuffie, Barrett or Cid, none of them was able to provide her with that feeling of being special and precious, like Glenn did. The feeling that someone´s there who completely understood her...
So every day, she had to live with those memories in her mind, and she expected this day to be no different from all the others. But as she woke up, something did not feel right. It was no physical pain at first, instead she just had a funny feeling, but nothing to worry about. She quickly would reconsider. As Tifa tried to stand up, she suddenly felt an intense pain in her chest, appearing just like that. Of course, it forced her to fall back onto the soft fabric of her bed, with her groaning in pain and holding her chest with her right hand. The pain really appeared just like that, without any reason, or so it appeared to her. In any case, it was so painful that she had to close her eyes, breathing heavily and hoping it would go away soon. Fortunately, her wish was fulfilled, as the pain disappeared again, as suddenly as it first appeared. Still breathing heavily, Tifa tried to consider the reasons for this horrible pain, and she was afraid of something being wrong with her heart. That would have been strange, though, with her being a sportive girl, so problems with her heart seemed far less likely than with "normal" persons.
Tifa remained on her bed for a few seconds, recovering from this bad surprise.
"What...was just that..." she whispered to herself as she finally stood up. She took several deep breaths as she closed her eyes, trying to listen to her heart beat. To her surprise, it seemed normal again, at least from what she could hear. Of course it was relieving to her, but this sudden event was still bothering her.
"Maybe...I should go see a doctor..." she said to herself, walking out of her bedroom and heading downstairs into her kitchen. For now, she wanted to leave it at that, with the pain being just an ordinary feeling, and nothing she had to be scared about. Everything would go on as usual in her sad and empty life, she was sure about that.
