Aisha was lost in thought as she paced back and forth in the lobby. The other patrons in the lobby were giving her a wide berth seeing just how upset she was. She was thinking about ways to comfort Jim. As Aisha was pacing a news report on a TV caught her attention.
"Overpopulation has been a problem for the past few years" said a news anchor. "Things have gotten so bad that there are starving families and the food supplies are running dangerously low. Rationing is doing very poorly as well. At this rate a famine is sure to happen. Government officials and experts estimate that in two years there'll be not enough food to go around". Here, the news anchor grimaced at someone off camera. "A radical solution has been suggested by the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire: that there should be a lottery for.....selected Ctarl-Ctarl to eat a certain amount of people to decrease the population. So far there has been no word yet if the proposed solution will be put in place..."
Aisha's stomach grumbled with approval at the news . Then Aisha's ears drooped.
"Aisha Clan-Clan?"
Aisha turned to face a doctor in scrubs. "The boy you were with is doing fine and will make a full recovery"
"Can I see him?" asked Aisha. The doctor nodded.
"He isn't awake from the surgery yet".
Aisha walked into Jim's room. Jim was sound asleep in the bed. Aisha sat at a chair near the bed and glanced at the TV in the room. She switched off the TV not wanting to let Jim know what was on the news. Especially not news about potentially a lottery for Ctarl-Ctarl to snack on people legally.
It took Jim about a hour and a half to wake up.
"Aisha....?" asked Jim sleepily.
"I'm here Jim" said Aisha going over to ruffle Jim's hair. Jim didn't even protest like the usually did. He still had an uncannily look about him. He bit his lower lip.
"Jim?" asked Aisha.
Jim looked to be on the brink of tears but he managed to keep his composure. In a shaky voice he recounted the events that nearly cost him his life as well as what he had been forced to eat while inside the stomach. Aisha blanched. She had never considered what her food experienced in her stomach. The very thought of it made Aisha sick.
"Oh Jim" said Aisha petting Jim's head.
Jim took a moment to collect himself and he started to look like the old Jimmy that Aisha knew.
"Ah, good" said a nurse entering the room. "You're awake. You're gonna stay the night for observation and then you'll be discharged in the morning"
"Alright" said Jim. The nurse stayed to check up on Jim's condition before exiting the room.
Jim was groggy after his surgery so he went to sleep again. After a moment of hesitation Aisha climbed into the bed with Jim and cuddled with him, careful not to rip out the I.V.
Gene and Suzuka appeared nearly two hours later. At that point Aisha had gotten off the bed. Jim was still asleep.
"Is Jim okay?" asked Gene. Aisha nodded and told the two what Jim told her.
" No wonder he was scared" said Gene with a nauseated look.
"No kidding..." said Suzuka. " The authorities are taking care of the sweat shop"
"Good" said Aisha.
Gene looked at the blank TV screen but said nothing.
"You heard the news lately?" asked Gene.
Aisha nodded. " I doubt it would come to that"
"Still...." said Gene. " It's the elephant in the room"
The three said nothing.
"I need comfort food" said Aisha strolling from the room. She headed towards the cafeteria.
When Aisha entered the cafeteria it was almost empty. Aisha sat down after getting a tray of food.
"Do you really think they would implement that lottery?" asked a Terran from clear across the room. Aisha's ears twitched. The voice had been low and wouldn't have been heard by another Terran but Aisha heard it loud and clear .
"Surely not" replied his companion. " There'll be rioting in the streets "
The human that had spoken first glanced at Aisha. "You would like that, wouldn't you, Ctarl-Ctarl?"
" Don't provoke her" said his companion.
The human didn't press any further and, in a few moments, both had left the room.
"I wouldn't if it meant eating Jim" said Aisha in a subdued tone, talking to nobody but herself. "I would rather starve to death"
