fearboy
Sitting alone in a barren room sat the boy responsible for taking down the Beastmen and their insane leader. Simon was an underdeveloped boy who had embarked on an adventure with his blood brother Kamina. He had fought some of the toughest, meanest and downright crazy mechas the Beastmen had and come out triumphant. Now he was the leader of a growing new city, one of the first major ones above ground. He had friends, a home and everything he could ever want, but his heart was still heavy.
“Brother,” Simon murmured as he looked out his window at the newly constructed homes. He had lost someone close to him, something he prayed would never happen again after his parents died. Now with the fighting over, Simon felt like his only purpose was gone and he was worthless. He reminisced all day about what he had done wrong and the people he failed to help, spiraling deeper into a depression. His growing sorrow didn’t go unnoticed by the people around him.
“Have you tried talking to him,” asked the buxom and tough Yoko. The fiery redhead had fought from the beginning with Simon and Kamina to defeat the Beastmen. After she had beaten them she planned to move on, maybe become a teacher, but she had remained when Simon fell into his depression. She had stayed, trying to get him out of his funk and was now at wits end. Desperate, she turned to a person she disliked greatly, Simon’s girlfriend Nia.
“I don’t know what to say to him. How do you help someone get over a person you’ve never met?” Nia held her sides tightly as she looked into Simon’s room to see the boy lost in his own mind again. Her red and blue eyes sadly watched as he slumped forward, his body unable to stay up. She wanted to help him even more then Yoko but was clueless about what she could do. For all her good qualities, Nia could be a little naïve making it hard for her to reach the depressed boy.
“Well standing out here isn’t making it any better. Everyday he’s getting worse, something has to be done.”
Nia and Yoko hung their heads and tried to think of an answer to help Simon feel better. They were standing outside his room, too afraid to go in there and confront Simon about his despair. They had tried talking to him about it, but he would just nod, give a weak smile and say there was nothing wrong. Nothing seemed to reach him. Other people had come to see him, but none of them had managed to reach the poor boy. Even Leeron’s disturbing flirting could not get a raise out of Simon.
As the girl’s brainstormed and tried to come up with something, a memory from long again formed in Nia’s head. She lifted her head with a smile threatening to split her face.
“I got it! I know how we can make Simon happy” Nia said and rushed off, leaving Yoko standing alone in the hallway with no idea what Nia had come up with. Needing to get back to work, the scantily clad girl looked one last time into Simon’s room and her face softened. She couldn’t bear seeing Simon like this, it was tearing a hole in her heart. Whatever Nia had come up with had better be work because Yoko couldn’t handle losing another teammate.

The next day, Yoko and Nia stood again outside Simon’s room. The boy had barely moved from his spot, the depression he was under was so bad he could scarcely move now. Yoko had come with high hopes that Nia had found the answer they had been looking for because if Yoko had zero answers. She had expected the multi-colored haired girl to bring a keepsake to remind Simon about his past with Kamina or someone who could help Simon see past his grief. When Yoko arrived she had felt hope for the first time since Simon fell into his depression, now she had no hope, but she did have a lot of anger.
“This is supposed to help Simon!” Yoko growled as she gestured to what Nia had cupped in her hand. In a chipped, old mug was a thick green tea that Nia had told Yoko would solve everything. Nia’s tea solution didn’t strike Yoko as the answer for Simon’s crippling depression.
“It’ll work,” Nia argued, holding the cup up. Steam wafted from the top of the murky drink. Yoko took a sniff and recoiled back in disgust. It smelled like old socks.
“How exactly is poisoning Simon with your bad cooking going to help him?”
Nia frowned at the stab at her cooking. Everyone else may find it disgusting, but Simon liked it and that was all that mattered. Standing upright, she took an unwavering pose before the more developed girl. “If you must know this tea is brewed with a special spice that used to belong to my fath…”
“The crazy old bastard,” Yoko sneered. Nia quickly nodded, not wanting to bring up her lineage anymore then Yoko did. Quickly she moved on before things got even more uncomfortable.
“He told me that anyone who takes this spice would be the happiest man in the world. I found some around the wreckage of my old home and decided to hold on to it. I think our best bet to help Simon is this spice.”
“You really willing to risk Simon’s health on something the old man had?” Yoko coldly asked. She didn’t trust anything that had belonged to the Spiral King. For all they knew, the spice could kill Simon rather then help him. Yoko wasn’t certain, but when she looked into Nia’s eyes she knew the other girl didn’t feel the same way.
She had been up all night, debating between using the spice or not. Her desire to help Simon was so strong she was willing to risk this. Her father had been a cruel and evil man, but he never lied to her. Why tell her how powerful the spice was when it wasn’t true. She had no idea what the spice would do or how it would make Simon happy, but she had to try something to help him.
Sighing, Yoko resigned herself to the fact that even if she told Nia not to do this she probably still would. Pointing towards Simon’s room, she let Nia enter.
“This had better work.”
Nia slowly entered the room, staring at the back of Simon’s head as he sat on his bed. He didn’t turn around as she entered, finding his feet to be much more interesting to stare at. Trying to smile with a despondency lingering around Simon, she sat down beside him on the bed and out her hands out with the tea.
“Drink,” she sweetly tried to ask to which Simon answered with a groan. For a terrifying second, Nia thought Simon’s depression had reached such magnitude that he wasn’t going to eat now. However, slowly but surely he took the tea from her hands and lifted it to his lips.
Yoko watched from outside her room, making a disgusted face as she watched Simon drink the tea. The stuff had smelt horrible and she couldn’t imagine it tasting any better. She bit her lip in anticipation, unsure what she expected to happen. Maybe Simon would jump to his feet, big grin on his face and a skip in his step. Trying to imagine Simon acting so carefree made Yoko chuckle and nearly miss what happened next.
With a crash, the cup fell from Simon’s fingers as His body went stiff. Simon fell back, vaguely hearing someone cry out his name as everything went black and he fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up, things would be much brighter and bigger for the young man.
