Annie didn't develop a taste of humans at the Dimensional Cafe like so many others had. She had gained a taste of human flesh pretty much after becoming a titan. It was a particular strong impulse even though it was meaningless since titans didn't have a digestive system. It didn't matter in the long run; it was an impulse that demanded to be sated. It could be controlled. It was possible to ignore it but it took a lot of will not to partake in the impulse.
Before Annie had joined the MPs, Annie had found a tiny little village outside the three walls. There were villages outside the three walls but they were few and far between. This particular village was in a remote mountain valley that looked as if it hadn't been ever been visited by any titans. The village had a religion that viewed the titans as gods. Viewing titans as gods wasn't completely unheard of on the island of Paradis. It was the wall religion that dominated.
Annie was worshipped by the village and they were firmly convinced that Annie had been sent to protect the village. Annie had lived in the remote mountain village for several months until the village was found by a hoard of titans. The village was naturally destroyed by the Titans. Annie had escaped the village by shifting into her titan self and had simply let the pure Titans devour the people of the village.
Annie had joined the MPs and was, eventually, found out that she was a titan that had killed countless soldiers. After fighting with Eren, Annie had incased herself in crystal where she stayed for three long years.
Annie was taken to an underground facility where she stayed in her crystal prison.
Armin had somehow avoided detection and had visited Annie several times. Armin himself didn't know just why he kept on visiting Annie. Armin proceeded to have one-sided conversations on what was going on. Within the crystal, Annie was in a semi-conscience state; she wasn't fully asleep nor fully awake. Annie heard every word that was directed at her.
The last time that Armin had visited her in the facility, he had told her that he had become the new colossal titan against his wishes. Armin had been caught by the military personnel there and never visited Annie again.
A long time later, the area above the facility came under attack by Titans. Annie was freed when a titan was killed and had smashed through several floors of the facility landing right next to Annie. The impact of the dead titan on the floor had knocked the crystal prison over, splitting it apart and freed her. Annie spent three solid minutes just coughing out liquid. That's when Annie made her escape from the facility.
The battle apparently had no survivors on either side for Annie ran into no resistance at all. Annie had grabbed a coat from a dead soldier and was able to vanish.
Annie had hidden herself away for several days before she was finally discovered by Captain Levi.
It was Captain Levi that had argued that they needed all the help they could get against Marlee that was sure to attack. In the end, Annie was pardoned on all charges by the new queen, Historia. Historia was reluctant on pardoning Annie of her crimes but saw the wisdom in getting the help from another titan shifter. At that point, Annie really didn't care which side she would fight with as long as she was no longer imprisoned.
A few months later, Annie and Captain Levi had discovered the Dimensional Cafe along with sixty or so soldiers.

Annie ran through the forest until she came to a flat plain of grass that gradually turned into a desert. The desert was a (mostly) flat plain of seemingly endless sand. She hesitated when she had came to a particularly high sand dune. Annie considered on turning back the way she had came. Annie decided to explore more of this new land she had found herself in.
In the desert, Annie found a number of downed satellites and several oasises. The desert wasn't completely without water but it was desolate.
Annie ran for what felt like sixty miles before she came to what was a mountain range. She paused when she caught sight of a tunnel that had the words Tera Jeera Prison above it. The tunnel led directly into a mountain side.
A prison in a desert. Good place for such a structure. The tunnel was enclosed by a high fence that had guard towers. The fence was almost as high as Annie herself and was clearly marked as electrified.
Annie detached herself from the nape of the neck of the titan body after she had lowered to her knees. Annie leapt from the decaying body of the titan body and landed near the gate of the fence.
"Glad to be out of there" said Levi. "but couldn't you have picked a more hospitable place than a desert?"
Bulma and Levi had been freed from within the stomach of the titan body which was dissolving. Bulma was fascinated by the way that the titan body was dissolving. Bulma's eye drifted towards the box that Annie had been carrying.
"What's this?" asked Bulma picking up the box. The lid of the box was opened slightly and so Bulma opened it.
Inside of the box were two syringes along with a lot of pieces of paper that looked like documents of some sort.
"Let's get in" said Annie gesturing at the tunnel.
"Why a prison?" asked Levi.
Annie shrugged. "This place caught my attention"
"Looks abandoned" observed Bulma.
"Just like everything in this dimension" said Levi.
The gate of the fence was in an advanced state of disrepair. It was fairly easy to open the gate. The electrified fence appeared to be dead. Bulma, Levi and Annie walked to the tunnel entrance.
The doors of the prison were knocked over and looked to have been ripped apart by something immense. The doors were made out of steel and was potmarked with inches deep scratches all over.
"Uhh...are you sure we want to explore this place?" asked Bulma.
"Something definitely broke out" said Levi looking over at the damaged door in detail.
"Like what?" asked Bulma in a fearful tone.
"Considering this place has dragons in it..." said Annie, her voice trailing off.
The three entered the prison cautiously. It was pitch black so Bulma pulled a flashlight out of a pocket and turned it on.
The three eventually found a door that was firmly locked. After some searching, the three found an opened doorway. The doorway led to what was clearly a guard post.
"Here we go" said Bulma, finding a big switch on a wall that was labeled with "main power" above it. Bulma pulled the switch. Lights on the ceiling came to life after several seconds of them flickering.
The guard room was thirty feet square filled with equipment typically found in such a room. There were blood splattered here and there on the floor and on the walls. There were scratch marks on each stone wall.
A line of monitors lined one of the walls. The monitors showed various angles of camera shots. At least one third of the total number of monitors weren't working at all. One blank monitor had a vicious claw mark on it. The prison was empty according to all the evidence.
"I'm curious about this box" Levi finally said after a lengthy pause. He grabbed the box from Bulma and sat it down on a long table. He proceeded to open the box and examined the contents.
"Same information we learned about in Eren's basement" said Levi after looking over a letter.
"How about these?" asked Annie picking up one of the two syringes.
"They contain something called Neo-Titan serum" said Levi.
Bulma had picked up another letter. The letter had a sizable map of a globe on it along with a lengthy explanation of the history of the world the box had come from.
Bulma was about to pick up another letter when a sound made the three of them jump. The sound was an eerie howl that vaguely sounded like the howl of a wolf, only much deeper and....evil-sounding if you wanted to be dramatic.
"I don't think this prison is abandoned after all" said Levi in a quiet voice.
