Gwen stood on the roof of a warehouse some twenty-five miles from New York. Gwen had spent all day tracking down a mysterious shipment for Matt Murdock, AKA The Kingpin. Gwen had no choice but to work for Murdock lest her father be inconvenienced or even killed. Murdock hadn't told what was in the shipment to Gwen. All that Gwen knew about the shipment was that it had been stolen from a train two weeks before. Murdock would've gone for other heroes but the heroes he wanted had gone missing. Murdock wanted the shipment to be "out of the wrong hands" and it had to be "off the books" as Murdock had put it; he even did the air quotes gesture as he was talking.
Gwen had been tracking down this mysterious shipment for the better part of the day. None of Gwen's contacts had been useful. Not even those at S.H.I.E.L.D. knew anything about the shipment. This was no easy job as per usual. Why couldn't there be nice easy-to-do jobs for once?
Gwen was led, eventually, to a small warehouse somewhere in the middle of nowhere which was actually outside of New York. Not many jobs had led Gwen outside of New York. Gwen had begun to think that New York was her personal jurisdiction. As if heroes needed jurisdiction in order to stop crimes.
There were guards around the warehouse. Not police. They all had the looks of goons who no doubt worked for one of the myriad villains in the world.
Gwen looked down to see two goons were guarding the entrance of the warehouse. Gwen had hoped to eavesdrop to learn about the shipment or what villain Gwen was dealing with here. The guards were remaining silent, however, much to the irritation of Gwen.
Gwen sneaked her way to a window on the roof that looked down at the main floor of the warehouse. Nothing much was happening within the warehouse save for someone working at a computer. As Gwen watched, somebody exited what had to be an office. Actually two people walked out of the office.
The first one to exit the office was a slender woman with auburn hair who had an eye-patch over an eye. There was something on the eye-patch itself; some kind of logo. Gwen had to squint in order to see the patch had the emblem of HYDRA on it. Oh great. Just what Gwen needed; a run-in with HYDRA. If HYDRA was involved it meant that things could get complicated real fast.
The second person to exit the office was Doctor Octopus. By the looks of it the two were in the middle of a heated argument.
"Since when Doc Ock and Hydra were bedfellows?" asked Gwen to herself.
The argument between the Hydra woman and Doc Ock was interrupted by a henchman rushing between them. The henchman was plainly in a panic as he pointed frantically at the entrance to the warehouse. Doc Ock and the Hydra woman exchanged looks before questioning the goon.
Gwen's spider-sense went off and she looked up to see that the whole area was heavily shrouded in a thick fog...or mist. Weren't fog and mist the same thing?
"Okay...." said Gwen looking around confused. "who turned on the fog machine?"
Gwen's spider-sense kept on insisting that there was an incoming attack but none came. After a lengthy pause, Gwen moved back to the edge of the roof to look down at the entrance of the warehouse.
There, standing in front of the warehouse, was a costumed figure. The figure was dressed in a leather duster and had a pumpkin for a head. Gwen couldn't tell if the pumpkin was real or a really professionally-made helmet shaped like a pumpkin. The pumpkin was carved so that it had the face of a traditional jack-o'-lantern. Gwen couldn't see into the inside of the mask to see who the figure was. The figure was carrying a small plastic bucket filled with what looked like candy. The figure was on the small size so it was either a kid or a dwarf. After seeing the costumed figure Gwen suddenly remembered that it was a day or two before Halloween. The events of the day must've made Gwen forget that little detail.
Doc Ock exited the warehouse and studied the person with the pumpkin head. The Hydra lady came to the door but didn't exit the building.
"Just who the hell are you?" asked Doc Ock to the costumed pumpkin head.
"Trick or treat" replied the figure holding out the plastic bucket.
"I very much doubt you're here just for candy" said the Hydra lady in a thick eastern European accent. Gwen couldn't see the expression of the Hydra lady from her vantage point.
"No candy?" asked the pumpkin head. "how about a trick then?"
Pumpkin Head reached into the plastic bucket of candy and pulled out what looked like a long stick that was almost two feet long. The stick was thick on one end and skinny on the other. Pumpkin Head hesitated before pointing the stick at the goon that was still guarding the entrance.
The first thing that happened to the goon, who happened to be a tough-looking woman, was that her skin slowly changed to blue. Then the body of the goon started to swell up just like a balloon. The female goon was understandably shocked to see what was happening to her body. The clothes of the woman popped open and eventually tore as the guard's body continued to swell. The legs and arms of the goon was soon overtaken by her swelling middle. The guard was soon just a big blue ball that was roughly ten feet in diameter. The guard's head was just barely visible while her arms and legs had effectively vanished into her ball-like stomach. All of the clothes were ripped to shreds, leaving the poor woman exposed to the world.
"What the...?" asked Doc Ock as he stared at the blown-up guard.
"Who are you?" asked the Hydra woman to Pumpkin Head.
"Trick or treat" said Pumpkin Head holding out the candy bucket again.
Gwen was way too intrigued by this....Pumpkin Head to do much of anything. Just who was this newcomer?
"Go away, kid" said Doc Ock after a pause. "before - "
Pumpkin Head cackled. "I'm not a kid. All I want here is candy. If I don't get some candy fast I'll perform another trick... and this time it won't be a harmless one. Maybe I'll change her -- " here, Pumpkin Head pointed right at Gwen. "into something truly fun"
Both Doc Ock and the Hydra woman looked right up at Gwen. Gwen had been in the act of shooting out a web to swing away but she was frozen as soon as Pumpkin Head had pointed at her. No matter how hard she tried Gwen couldn't move.
"Spider Woman!" gasped the Hydra woman.
"Must be here for the shipment" said Doc Ock. "alright, whoever you are, I'm not sure how you found us or what you plan to do here but if you're here to steal --"
"Trick or treat" repeated Pumpkin Head holding out his plastic bucket.
"Just give the brat some candy!" snapped the blueberry that was the guard. She had difficulty in talking and her voice was muffled.
"We have no candy" said Doc Ock.
Pumpkin Head lowered the plastic bucket slowly. He studied Doc Ock and the Hydra woman. "No candy? What a shame"
Pumpkin Head suddenly disappeared in a whirl of fog. Only to reappear on the roof of the warehouse not ten feet away from Gwen. Pumpkin Head reached into the plastic bucket and rummaged through it until he pulled out a flute. The flute was made out of silver.
