June placed you in Marissa’s hand.

“Marissa, please brief our friend on the case and get him up to speed.”

“Will do boss,” Marissa replied, and began walking out of the office and to a desk cluttered with toys and plants, and sat you down on a SpongeBob mousepad.

“You don’t remember me do you?” She asked.

This was puzzling. You were pretty sure you’d never seen her before in your life. You guessed her to be 6-7 years older than you, but maybe she somehow knew you from school.

“I tutored your sister in math. She was 14, I was 16. You ratted us out to your mom for taking smoke breaks.”

“Missy?” You said, shocked.

“Yup, but I go by my full name, Marissa now.”

Your sister was four years older than you, so that was around 10 years ago. But the memories came back quickly.

“So… uh…”

“Look, no hard feelings. I’m a little hurt you didn’t remember, seeing as how you couldn’t get enough of me back then, but it’s all good.”

You’d had such a crush on Marissa when you were young.

“For the record, I didn’t rat you out. I told on my sister for smoking, she’s the one who told on you!”

“I got grounded for a month!”

“Sorry,” you said sheepishly. Marissa laughed. “I told you it’s okay!”

Marissa spent the next hour detailing the Stanton case to you. It was all way over your head, and you were afraid you weren’t going to able to provide any insight, and that it wouldn’t sit well with June.

“And that’s about it,” Marissa said, “for now. Until Monique returns tomorrow.”

“Gotcha. I’ll probably need to hear what she has to say before I can really see if I can help,” you replied.

“Understood. I’m gonna go out for a smoke, you gonna be okay here?”
