The sudden, muffled sound of sobbing drifted through the hallway, cutting through the playful bickering between Hazel and Kayla. It wasn't just a sniffle; it was a genuine, heartbroken wail that seemed to vibrate through the walls of the house. Hazel’s expression shifted instantly from playful to concerned, her grip on Terry softening but not releasing. "Mom?" she whispered, her voice laced with worry. Kayla’s sarcastic smirk vanished, replaced by a look of genuine confusion. Even Kayla, for all her brooding detachment, didn't like it when their mother spiraled into one of her emotional episodes.

"She's probably just having a meltdown because she can't find the right shoes for her outfit," Kayla muttered, though the lack of conviction in her voice suggested she hoped it wasn't something worse. Without needing to be told twice, Hazel began to march toward the master bedroom, her giant strides creating a series of rhythmic thumps that Terry felt in the pit of his stomach. He was still clutched in her hand, his little legs dangling in the air as he was carried like a prized possession toward the source of the distress.

As they approached the open bedroom door, the scene that greeted them was one of absolute fashion-related carnage. The room looked like a whirlwind had hit a boutique. Designer dresses were strewn across the plush white carpet, piles of high heels were scattered like fallen monuments, and several shopping bags had been overturned, spilling luxury accessories everywhere. In the center of the chaos sat Jenna, draped across her vanity stool, her long black wavy hair cascading over her shoulders like a dark waterfall. She was clutching a silk scarf to her chest, her mascara slightly smudged beneath her eyes.

"Oh, my poor, sweet babies!" Jenna wailed as she spotted them. She didn't even seem to notice that Terry was a tiny passenger in Hazel's palm; her focus was entirely on the emotional weight of her own crisis. She reached out with one arm, gesturing for them to come closer. The sheer scale of her grief felt disproportionate to the surroundings, a classic Jenna Rose meltdown where the smallest inconvenience became a cosmic tragedy.

Hazel rushed forward, practically launching herself at her mother. "Mommy! What's wrong? Why are you crying?" she asked, her voice high-pitched with anxiety. As Hazel knelt beside her, she didn't forget her cargo, holding Terry up so that he was level with Jenna's tear-streaked face. Terry felt the warmth of his mother's breath—a gust of wind that nearly knocked him over—as she looked at him, her eyes widening with a sudden, intense surge of maternal longing.

Jenna let out a shuddering sob, her chest heaving under the fabric of her designer lounge wear, which sent a ripple of motion through the air around Terry. "Nobody loves me!" she cried, her voice echoing through the room like a booming organ. "I'm just... I'm too old! I'm a relic! A forgotten vintage piece!" She collapsed further into her vanity stool, her long, black hair tangling with the silk scarves scattered around her. To Jenna, the gap between thirty-nine and the youth of the dating world was a vast, impassable canyon, and in her current state of emotional fragility, she was convinced she had become invisible to the world.

Hazel’s face crumpled in sympathy, her heart breaking for her mother. "Mommy, that's not true! You're the most beautiful woman in the whole world!" she exclaimed, squeezing Terry slightly in her hand as she leaned in to hug Jenna's leg. Terry felt the sudden pressure of Hazel's fingers and let out a tiny, stifled squeak, his velvet waistcoat bunching up as he was pressed against the side of Hazel's palm. He looked up at his mother, seeing the dramatic, mascara-streaked tragedy of her face. He wanted to tell her that thirty-nine was hardly 'old,' but he knew that logic had no place in a Jenna Rose meltdown.

Kayla stood back, her arms crossed, though her expression was softer than usual. She sighed, a long, theatrical sound, but she didn't mock her mother this time. "You're literally an influencer, Mom. You have like, half a million people who think you're a goddess. The 'old' thing is just a mid-life crisis you're having on a Tuesday," she pointed out, her voice dripping with its usual irony, even if her intention was to actually ground her mother in reality. However, Jenna wasn't listening to Kayla; she was staring at Terry, her eyes glistening with a fresh wave of affection.

Suddenly, Jenna's hand shot out with the speed of a striking cobra. Before Hazel could even react, Jenna had gently but firmly plucked Terry from her daughter's grasp. Terry felt the world blur for a split second before he was hoisted high into the air and brought crashing down into the soft, fragrant valley of his mother's cleavage. He was instantly engulfed by the scent of expensive lilies and a cloud of sheer lace. Jenna squeezed him tightly against her chest, her heart beating like a giant hammer against his back.

"Oh, my sweet, precious, tiny Terry!" Jenna wailed, her voice vibrating through Terry's entire skeleton. "At least I have you! You'll always love your mommy, won't you? You're the only man in this house who doesn't judge me for my age!" She began to rock back and forth, effectively shaking Terry's entire world. Terry struggled to find any purchase on the slippery fabric of her promo-branded robe, his arms flailing as he was smothered by the overwhelming, suffocating warmth of her maternal longing. He was less a son in this moment and more a living stress-ball for her emotional turmoil.
