As he hung his mask-heavy head, Terry couldn’t open his eyes. The pink satin, the saccharine blue eyes, the crushing weight of cuteness. Terry was so lost in the silent, internal battle that he didn’t register the seismic shifts happening behind him.

The rustle of fabric was like distant thunder. The soft thumps of objects being moved were earthquakes far away. Many minutes passed, but he didn’t notice. He only blinked back to full awareness when he felt Hazel return to the vanity, felt her tower of body heat looming over him.

He turned and looked up through the eye holes of the mask, and his tiny heart stuttered.

Hazel stood there, beaming. But she was transformed.

She was wearing the same outfit. A perfect, gigantic-scale replica of the hime lolita dress he was trapped in. The same pink-and-white satin, the same bell-shaped skirt that billowed around her like a cotton candy cloud, the same lace trim that was now as wide as banners. She wore the pink tights, the glossy black Mary Janes, the lace choker, and an enormous, perfect pink bow nestled in her cascading brown hair. The only difference was her face - her own, cute, pretty face, flushed with excitement and framed by a few stray curls. Not hidden behind a mask.

A fresh, deeper wave of humiliation washed over him. She’d planned this. They were matching. She and her doll. Her uncovered face made plain who was the master and who was the doll. (Hey - isn’t my face cute enough?) The thought pierced him: shameful, sharp. He immediately recoiled from it, disgusted with himself for even caring. Of course his face wasn't good enough. He was a boy. The mask was to complete the fantasy, to erase him completely. In any case, he should be glad for the anonymity. Right?

“Ta-daaa!” she sang, striking a pose with one hand on her hip, the other making a peace sign by her cheek. “We’re twinsies! Well, almost. You’re the portable version!”

She carefully placed her enormous, pink, Sanrio-charmed phone onto a tripod in the middle of the room, pointed right at the vanity. She fiddled with it, her giant fingers tapping the screen. A tiny red light began to shine.

“Okay, we’re recording!” she announced, her voice taking on a performative, bubbly tone. She bent towards the camera and waved at it. “Hey, TikTok! It’s your girl Hazel, and today I’m here with my very, very special living doll! We’re in our matching hime lolita dresses, and we’re gonna do some super kawaii poses for you!" She turned to him. "Okay, Hime-chan, get ready!” Then she whispered loudly. “Don’t worry! We’re not live!

Still, Terry froze. The tiny red light felt like a laser sight on his soul. “Hazel… no. I can't. Please.”

Hazel’s brilliant smile faded, and her big, blue eyes instantly shimmered with a film of tears. Her lower lip trembled, pouting. “But… But Terry, it’s just a little fun. And it’s so cute. Don’t you want to make a fun memory with me?” Her voice was a wounded warble. “I worked so hard on your outfit… and mine…”

Terry felt his stomach sink into his guts. To refuse her now felt like kicking a puppy. A giant, frilly, emotionally volatile puppy. Things would probably be smoother if he just went along with it. He was anonymous, after all… He could just pretend it was Tina in the video, if anyone ever saw it.

He let out a breath that fogged the inside of his mask for a second. “...Fine. Just… just a few.”

The tears vanished, replaced by sun-bright joy. “Yay! You’re the best brother ever! Okay, first pose! It’s a classic!” She gracefully sank into a slight curtsy, one hand holding the edge of her skirt out, the other touching her cheek delicately. “See? It’s called the ‘princess greeting’! You try!”

Terry stared. The movements were fluid, natural for her. For him, in the heavy, restrictive dress and hard shoes, it was like trying to pilot a broken mech. He awkwardly bent his knees, the satin rustling loudly in his muffled hearing. He tried to mimic her hand positions, but his limbs felt stiff and uncooperative.

“Aww, you’re so adorably clumsy!” Hazel giggled, not unkindly. “Here, let me help.” She leaned down, her massive hand entering his frame. With terrifying gentleness, she used the tip of her finger to nudge his arm into the correct position, then pressed lightly on his shoulder to deepen his ‘curtsy’. Her touch was warm and overwhelming through the fabric. “There! Perfect! Hold it!”

She straightened up and resumed her own perfect pose, flashing a dazzling smile at the phone. Terry held the position, his tiny muscles trembling with strain and humiliation.

“Next!” she chirped, transitioning seamlessly. She brought both hands up, cupping her own face, her eyes wide and sparkling. “This is the ‘my cheeks are so squishy’ pose! It emphasizes innocence and cuteness! Try it!”

Terry, his arms aching, slowly raised his own hands. The lace from his sleeves brushed against the hard, smooth surface of his mask. He couldn’t cup his face; he cupped the cold, featureless porcelain. The absurdity of it - pretending to have squishy cheeks behind an unmoving mask - threatened to make him laugh hysterically or scream. He did neither. He just stood there, hands hovering by his painted-on blush.

“You have to sell it, Hime-chan!” She instructed patiently. “Think I’m just a little doll who loves pretty things! The viewers can’t see your face, but they can sense your attitude!”

He had no attitude. Only a deep, sinking despair. But he tried. He tilted his head a little, as if considering his own ‘squishiness’.

“Yes! Like that! So good!”

Pose after pose followed. The “shy glance over the shoulder.” The “holding my pretty skirt.” The “mesugaki wink.” Each time, Hazel executed it with the grace of a seasoned idol. Each time, Terry fumbled, moving like a rusty tin soldier. And each time, Hazel would gently, enthusiastically, correct him.

“Your back should be straighter, it shows off the line of the dress!” Prod.
“Point your toe just a little, it’s daintier!” Push.
“Try to make your movements smaller and more delicate. You’re a precious thing!” Poke.

Her instructions were a relentless tutorial in becoming the perfect doll. With every adjustment of his limb, every whispered encouragement to be “more delicate,” she was sculpting him. But the worst part was his own pathetic compliance. He followed her directions. He held the poses until his body ached. He did it to stop the shame, to hear her delighted praise, and to simply get through this nightmare.

The things he did to make Hazel happy.

Finally, she struck a final pose, hugging herself and swaying side to side. “And… that’s a wrap! Thank you, Hime-chan, for being the most adorable little doll ever!” She blew a kiss to the phone and reached over to stop the recording.

The red light died. The immediate, performative pressure eased, but the atmosphere didn’t. The humiliation was baked into the satin, sewn into the lace.

Hazel swooped down and plucked him from the vanity, lifting him to her face. Her eyes, now soft and genuinely affectionate, scanned his masked form. “You were amazing,” she whispered, her breath a warm, candy-scented breeze. “A little stiff at first, but you got so much cuter by the end! You’re a natural.”

He wanted to tell her to delete the video. He wanted to demand she take the mask off. He wanted to cry. But he was so tired. The fight had been smothered under layers of pink satin and sisterly expectation.

He just hung limply in her grasp, a used-up prop. Her living doll. Her Terry-chan. She cradled him against the vast, warm, satin-covered slope of her chest - the real things, not the silicone forms he was forcibly wearing - cooing about how cute he was.

"H-hazel..." He managed to say, while muffled into her breast. "P-please don't post that..."
