Before Terry could even process the horror of the proposed necklace-harness, a blur of pink and glitter shot towards him.
“My turn!” Hazel chirped, her voice a sing-song of pure, unadulterated excitement.
The world became a whirlwind. Giant, glitter-dusted fingers closed around him, plucking him from the table with an effortless, proprietary air. He was yanked from the relative safety of the breakfast table into a gale of motion.
“Hazel, be careful with your brother!” Jenna’s voice boomed from what seemed like a mile away, but it was already fading.
“I’m always careful with him, Mom!” Hazel called back, her grip tightening as she bounded from the kitchen.
She is NOT, thought Terry.
The journey was a nauseating roller coaster. The floor blurred beneath him as she sprinted, her footsteps thundering like earthquakes. The banister was a rushing brown river, the ceiling a distant, white sky. He was pressed against the soft, warm skin of her palm, the sweet, candy-like scent of her lotion filling his lungs. He could feel the powerful, youthful thrum of her pulse through her skin.
“We’re gonna have so much fun, Terry-Berry!” she cooed.
They reached the top of the stairs and she bolted down the hall. Her bedroom door loomed, a massive slab of painted pink wood. She kicked it open with a crash that shook his entire body, then slammed it shut behind them with a final, deafening BANG.
Silence, for a single, precious second. Then, the sound of Hazel’s excited, panting breaths buffeted his back.
He was deposited with a gentle plop onto a cool, smooth surface. Terry staggered, his legs wobbly from the ride. He was standing on a vast, glossy white plain, dotted with titanic, colorful objects. He recognized the landscape immediately: Hazel’s vanity. To one side stood a forest of makeup brushes, their bristles soft and towering. To the other, a collection of perfume bottles, like gleaming, crystalline towers. The entire area was dusted with a fine, iridescent glitter that caught the light from the window. Behind him was a mirror larger than a row of skyscrapers.
Hazel leaned in, her face eclipsing the ceiling light. Her wide, blue eyes were sparkling with manic joy, her cheeks flushed. Her multi-colored hair clips were like rainbows in her brown hair. The top of her cleavage was just slightly visible through the neck of her pink shirt, covered in rainbows and unicorns.
