“I’m lonely,” you admit, the confession sounding pathetic in the dusty silence. “I don’t want a nurse. I just… want a companion. Someone to talk to. To share a meal with. To fill this quiet house.”

Zara studies you, her immortal annoyance seeming to war with a genuine, if bemused, pity.

“A companion,” she repeats, as if tasting a strange new word. She looks at the mortal hands she now possesses, then back at your weary face. “Very well. I have existed for eons. I have seen empires rise and fall. I can… attempt to make small talk.”

She says the last two words with profound distaste, but she doesn’t argue further.

She follows you downstairs, her movements slightly awkward without her ethereal grace. The house feels different with another presence in it. She sits at your kitchen table, a cosmic being in a floral-print chair, and waits.
