Heat rises to your cheeks, but you hold her gaze. “I’m a lonely old man, and you are the most beautiful creature I have ever seen. I don’t just want a housemate. I wish for you to share my life… and my bed.”

 

Zara goes very still. The air crackles.

 

“Ah,” she says, her voice dangerously soft. “That kind of fantasy.” She looks down at her temporary, mortal form, then back at you, her golden eyes unreadable. “You have traded my freedom for this? To be your… consolation prize?”

 

She stands, and despite her mortality, she seems to loom.

 

“You have one chance to convince me this is not a profound and tragic error. What, exactly, do you offer a being like me, beyond a dying body and a dusty house?”
