"Great, the gang's all here! Now we can die together" 

Kaito nodded, hidden behind a tree with a silly smile ignoring for a while how real the danger in front of him looked, simply because he was entranced with the live performance of an episode he almost remembered perfectly. He saw it all, Ruby falling from the Nevermore and crashing with Jaune, how Nora rode the Ursa, how Pyrrha kept running from the Deathstalker, Yang getting mad, Jaune "rescuing" Weiss... It was, of course, better than TV, a lot better. 

And so far everything was going according to script, his presence wasn't causing any trouble. As much as he wanted to intervene or help in some way with his knowledge of the events, his earlier reflection served to quiet down the fanboy part of him that couldn't wait to see what would happen if he even decided to say hi to any of the characters. Without a weapon or known powers there was no point to get involved, plus he knew they would win eventually, after Ruby and Weiss got their moment and..

"What about the guy hidden on the trees?" Nora suddenly said 

"What guy?" Ruby asked instead of rushing out to futilely attach the Deathstalker and Kaito felt a shock of thrill and anxiety run through his body. He knew this wasn't on the script! The decision to intervene was taken out of his hands now.

"There was someone there, but he seemed to be on his own" Ren explained 

"Aww, did he separate from his team?" Ruby immediately sympathized with what she believed was Kaito's problem, and he wondered and hoped if anything else did change in Remnant the moment he woke up apart from his clothes. After all, a civilian wouldn't be in the middle of the forest during test day, right? Kaito tried to make sense of it looking again at his clothes and judging them a bit too elaborate for a civilian, though he couldn't tell what that meant in this show's standards. If only he had a weapon to confirm his suspicions..

Lost in his internal rambling, he barely was hearing what team RWBY and JNPR were discussing

"It doesn't matter, we should just grab the pieces and move on" 

"Oh yeah, I think I saw him too while I was running, did you see him, Jaune?" 

"I was.. too busy flying" 

"Hmph.. what now then? We CAN grab the pieces, but if he's alone and those two monsters are still around..." 

"Maybe he's not a lost student? maybe he's a Beacon teacher checking our performance?"

"He didn't look like a teacher"

"An assistant?"

"Or a spy?"

"I don't think they need to follow us like that"

"Yoohoo, are you still there? or are you a spy?" Nora happily shouted

"NORA!" 

The shout again took the decision for him and seeing no choice, Kaito stepped out and greeted the group with a timid wave, advancing slowly and nervously. The reality of it all once again hit him, and despite all he thought he could contribute to the protagonists the only thought on his mind at the moment was how to make his legs stop trembling.

"There you are!" Nora waved back happily

"Did he just manage to make it all the way through here without any weapon on him?" Blake pointed out

"At least it's a normal entrance" Yang sighed

"Uhh, guys?"

"Watch out!"

The nervousness made Kaito forget entirely about the dangerous creatures circling nearby, creatures that happened to notice him at last just as team RWBY and JNPR did.

"Ruby!"

What happened next was a blur. The sight of the Deathstalker completely paralyzed him, and it enticed the Nevermore to lock in on him too, attracted to his fear. Just before the creature could attack he felt something tackling him with force, taking the air out of him and making him roll away from the scorpion-like Grimm. Opening his eyes he saw Ruby groaning next to him, and looking up he saw the Nevermore ready to attack. There was only time to feel powerless until an ice cave suddenly formed out of nowhere to block the attack.

"Ruby you dolt.. that was.. are you okay? and who are you?" Weiss wanted to complain but for once her new teammate wasn't showing off, but showing a kind of leadership and bravery she could only respect. And of course, she noticed Kaito, who was quietly recovering his breath and his senses, trying to process what just happened. He got rescued, and he struggled to believe everything was real, looking at disbelief at the layer of ice protecting them.

"Weiss!.. hey, are you okay?" Ruby and Weiss both looked at him curiously, expecting answers he wasn't prepared to give.
