"And that's how it all happened." Daniel finished explaining to the already agitated patient crowd. The explanation took far longer than anticipated with him being constantly interrupted mid sentence with questions. Eventually it just got to a point where he told them to hold all questions until the end.
Once he was finished though, he took the time to gauge their reactions. Needless to say the most constant one was anger while the others surprisingly ranged from confusion to pity. He hadn't been expecting that last one and it was a welcome sight as opposed to the constant distain he normally saw.
"So let me get this straight..." and younger man began. "You insulted a sorceress on live T.V?"
Daniel nodded.
"You made that poor woman cry because you thought she was a fake?" a woman asked in a passive/aggressive manner.
Again Daniel nodded.
"And she cursed you in relation for making her look like a fool." a hobo added.
"Pretty much." Daniel sighed. This was the first time he'd ever told this story to anyone that wasn't his wife or daughter. To be quite honest he didn't actually expect these people to listen to what he had to say.
"So you lied to your daughter for all these years to protect her but it all backfired on you."
Daniel felt like he needed a drink. "Yep. I'm spineless. I couldn't even take off my helmet and tell her I'm sorry."
"Wow." and older man chimed in. "You're afraid of your own daughter."
That one struck a nerve, and Daniel turned away. "I'm a coward. I see that now."
"Yeah, you are!"
"You're a piece of shit!"
"Do you know how much we have to suffer because of you!?"
"Because of you Garganta over there said she's going to live in the city from now on!"
"What!?" Daniel gasped in shock. Diana said she was going to live in the city! She couldn't! "Are you serious!?"
"As a heart attack!" a middle aged man sneered. "She even said she doesn't care if she steps on anything or damages the buildings anymore. That bitch just wants to spite us!"
"Yeah!" the crowd roared with righteous fury.
"Don't call her that!" Daniel snapped. "Besides, you're all at fault too! You keep putting her down whenever you can because she's different!"
"We wouldn't do that if she wasn't an 80ft freak that smashes our houses, flattens our cars, and inconveniences our lives!" a teen sniped.
"I'm an Uber driver and she smashed my SUV! I couldn't even take my girls to soccer practice."
A bald man then stepped up to the plate. "Your girl stepped on my house and I had to live in a rundown motel for six months!"
The complaints grew more and more angry and vicious and it all made Daniel's head spin. Yes he knew Diana inconvenienced a lot of people with her size but some these stories were just shocking.
"My son goes to bed scared every night that the big bad giant is going to sit on him!"
"She's super scary!"
She stepped on my cat, Mittens!"
That last one made Daniel wince. This wasn't good. The crowd looked ready to attack! He needed to calm them all down before they all did something stupid.
"Enough! Look I know what you're all thinking, but attacking Diana isn't the answer. Besides, do you really want to piss her off right now when she's like this!? It's suicide!"
"We don't need a lecture from the coward!"
Daniel was nearing the end of his rope. "Please! Look into your hearts. She's not the one to blame! I-It's me! Attack me, just... leave my little girl alone."
He really hoped this would sway the crowd even if he was scared to death.
The angry mob looked at Daniel, then towards the laid out giant, and then back to Daniel again.
What would they do!
