New World Order Giant/ess Stories in Japan chapter 9 by copier · original author: lllop

Sakura didn't know how long she had been running.

It had started while the 11-year-old was with her mom at a local convenience store. There had been a sudden explosion in the middle of downtown, and the next thing she knew, she was running alongside a swarm of people, away from the two monsters that had made Tokyo into their placemat. She was fortunate to be one of the few who managed to get on the first evacuation convoys in time, where she along with several others was sent straight to a collection of makeshift tents somewhere down in the Kanagawa prefecture.

Even now, the quakes from their fighting were devastating. Mt. Fuji had been completely disfigured, a pale shadow of her former glory. Any hope of being able to influence the outcome was deemed useless, so the evacuees could only watch as two titanic boys in nothing but their briefs fought over the ruins of the capital.

Somewhere along the way, Sakura had lost her mom in the chaos. She hadn't seen her at all in the convoys, nor did she see a single sign of her anywhere among the tents. The only place left where she could think of to look was back in Tokyo, but she knew she couldn't go back. There was too much back there, too much red and brown and black that mixed together in ways that make her mind recoil. She wasn't strong enough to face that again, to try to discover if she was among the red stains, the broken watermelon heads and the open stomachs and-!

Just then, Sakura happened to spot a strange, small green gem resting among the roots of a great oak tree. It was so small that it almost blended into the grass, but the strange glimmer that it gave off, completely divorced from any external source of light, immediately caught her attention. It was clear that this crystal, whatever it was, had some kind of power behind it, but what exactly was it? Why was it shining so brightly? Was it even worth picking up?

Sakura felt another quake hit the area, the few remaining buildings crumbling to dust in the distance, and right there and then decided to grasp onto it as tight as she could. Whatever it was, if it was the only way for her to find her mother, then she was going to take it.

Jerome couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The 9-year-old had thought it had been some kind of weird special effects or AI, but no, it was all over the news. Lining every mall and home that he'd come across on the way to school, two massive titans in red and blue briefs were prominently displayed on all the TV. There were real life giants, as big if not bigger than Mount Fuji, battling it out over the ruins of Tokyo, and they were feeling the aftereffects even in France...

This was so cool! He always dreamed of growing huge and stomping on buildings, and now he knew for sure that this was actually a possibility! Sure, it was only in Japan right now, but the fact that it could happen at all still meant something, didn't it.

Just then, the boy heard rumbles in the distance. Out in the horizon, a large mop of brown hair blocks out the sun, and chaos breaks loose.

Amidst the panicked shrieks of cars honking and people tearing through the streets with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Jermone took off straight towards the action. On the way, he spots a small green gem rolling down along the pavement, and like that, he knows exactly what he has to do.

Past the screams and the sound of falling rubble, he grasped onto the strange glowing rock as hard as he could and felt jubilant when his clothes star tearing at the seams. It was clear that whatever was going on was in Japan starting to affect the whole world as well, and he wasn't about to be left out of all the fun! Bursting through his home, Jerome giggled as he imagined facing other kids just like him over the ruins of Paris, using the ruins as crunchy gravel beneath their feet as they fought. They were going to make the city, no, the world theirs if they had to!

"W-what's going on!?" Sato nervously said. Below his feet, he suddenly felt the ground shake, and then a whole bunch of kids his age all suddenly seemed to sprout around him like daisies. The newly miles-tall giants waste no time in establishing themselves, locking the two formerly solitary giants in a protracted wrestling match over the archipelago.

"Hm?" Mako looked back at his struggling arch-enemy while fending off another giant. "I don't know... but I don't think I could've asked for anything more!"

"WHAT?!"

"Think about it. We were all alone, and now we have so many others here with us. We have friends to make, enemies to fight, cities to conquer. Things are going to get really interesting from now on. Isn't it great?"

It certainly didn't feel great for Sato at all. He could only watch in horror as he saw more giants and giantess sprout from the tiny pillars of smoke gathering in the cities like daisies, but there was little he could do about it. One way or another, he and Mako had inadvertently set about a new course for human history, one that would irrevocably change it and make the planet completely unrecognizable.

~~~
What had started as a phenomenon isolated to Japan had rapidly spread across the world as an unrelenting plague. From Venice to Singapore, Moscow to Monterrey, tiny green gems much like the one Mako had found made themselves known to children of all ages and backgrounds. They provided much the same blessings as they did to Mako, growing them to miles-tall titans of destruction. Lurid images quicky spread of the Statute of Liberty standing next to a bulbous pinkie toe five times its size, a boy reclining within the Grand Canyon, and much more.
It wasn't long before matters quickly degenerated into an all-out war of all against all. With precious little space to fit all of the titanic children, and even less resources to go around, it was only natural that they would turn against each other. Governments the world over could do very little to nothing to influence the situation. There were some fortunate nations that were able to get a clade of giants on their side for a while, but it was clear that their power was completely subordinate to the juvenile titans that ruled the earth.
Indeed, it was all too clear that the giants were the new masters of the world. They rampaged as they pleased, fought whenever they wanted, and in general made it clear that they would do whatever they wanted with no restrictions. No amount of sentimentality on the part of some of the giants, or firepower on the part of humanity, could alter this incontestable fate.
Humanity, quite simply, had no choice but to accept their new place. They could despair all they wanted about how far they had been made to fall, of how arbitrary and meaningless it had all been, but there was no use crying over spilled milk. There were no lessons that could be garnered from this, no reckoning with the sins of mankind for allowing matters to go as far as they did. In the end, their fall was just a simple, random occurrence no one could have possible predicted, and in many ways that was the worst blow humanity could have asked for.
Matters weren't always so incredibly dire for the humans, though. Their tallest skyscrapers may had done little but tickle at the bottoms of their toes, but there were still those who were able to reach the hearts of the child goliaths and come to an arrangement with them. Some acted as protectors for a scattering of cities, serving as living gods. They waved away typhoons with a flick of a finger, blocked rampaging floods with little more than a single foot, and prevented volcanoes from erupting by plugging them with a finger. Others were more proactive and roamed the land wherever they pleased, crossing over oceans to find whatever pockets of untouched wildlife still lay undisturbed to bring back to their homes. Some even went so far as to form new landmasses for the tiny humans to spread and rebuild
That still did not compare to the sheer number of giants that simply rampaged and lazed around to their hearts' content. They splayed themselves over mountains ranges and searched around for any settlements to play with, taking their time to give the humans false hope before they completely annihilated them and moved on to the next. Still others more were simply trying to survive, looking for whatever scraps of nourishment they could get for their leviathan mouths.
This brave new world, one that no one had truly asked for, came into shape gradually over the course of several months. Eventually, after some time, it became impossible to imagine that there had been any other reality other than this one. Such was the adaptability of human nature.
~~~

Meanwhile, at the heart of the country where this had all started, the children who joined Mako and Sato in stature immediately began fighting amongst themselves, aligning themselves with to either boy to determine the fate of Japan. Eventually, the two had sides had managed to come to a stalemate and divided the former island nation neatly in half. Mako and his group claimed everything East of the greater Tokyo area, while Sato claimed everything to the West. Tokyo itself had been left as a sort of neutral zone for the two sides, with both mutually agreeing to let the city be for now while they focus on adjusting to their new normal.

Sato couldn't say he was satisfied with that. Heck, he was livid. He'd spend so long fighting, trying his best to preserve what little he could of Japan, and all he had to show for it was one half of a broken home. Mako and his cronies were free to terrorize their size as much as he pleased, and all he could do was watch.

Sato sat up, looking down upon the quiet little city that he had encircled by his legs. Something had to change. He knew that much, but what? And how?
