Sato and Mako: Destined Rivals Giant/ess Stories in Japan chapter 8 by copier · original author: lllop

Sato couldn't remember where he had first seen that rock.

All he could recall for certain was that before, he was running, trying to dodge falling bits of concrete and girders as his whole world fell apart around him.
His mom and dad had been trapped in their home with no way to get out as it burned, and his sister had given up her life pushing him out of the way of a careening car.

Then the district his best friend lived had been... had been...

He couldn't remember. There was a blank void of nothing in his mind, as though actively trying to redact any possibly memory that could be linked to what had happened. All he or anyone else could focus on was getting away by any means that they could, which that monster was away in Mt. Fuji.

Then he had seen that rock, and he had touched it, and now he was here, wearing nothing but his red briefs, standing over a carpet of tiny crystalline shards that didn't even reach his toenail. He'd been too shocked to even move, paralyzed by the realization that he had grown miles tall, that he destroyed entire neighborhoods and killed thousands just like that monster had, just like he had-!

He had to get out of here as fast as he could. Focusing on absolutely nothing else, he lifted his right foot up, millions screaming in pure fear and panic as he lifted it across several districts. In one single bound, he was able to make it from where he was all the way to the outskirts, and placed his foot as gently as he could. Even with how lightly he had pressed on the ground, Sato could still see smoke coming out of where nearby buildings had once stood, and he hastily made sure that he quickly lifted his other foot and made it several paces away from where Tokyo was.

Looking down at the city from here Sato was immediately struck by how pitiful it looked. There were massive gashes where Shibuya and Shinjuku once wear, along with several nasty footprint-shaped craters spanning several neighborhoods. It was all so horrible to witness, yet the 10-year-old couldn't help but be struck by how beautiful Tokyo was as well. It was so tiny and delicate and fragile, with little lights that still shone bright even up here. None of the skyscrapers even made it up to his toenails, not even Tokyo Tower or the Skytree, but whatever was left still stood proudly amidst the ruins, the sheer breadth making Sato all the more aware of how much effort and engineering it must have taken to accomplish all this.

How could anyone that was once human look at something like this and just... just desecrate it this way!

With newfound determination, Sato set off for where that demon had last went. If nothing else, for the sake of his family, for everyone, he would avenge them. That was the only thing he had left now.

With a mighty yawn that broke the clouds and caused bits of Mt. Fuji to crumble, Mako breezily stared up at the sky. Did he always get tired this easily? Mako could only figure that his boredom was that bad that he would sooner sleep in the middle of the day than bear with it any longer than he had to.

"HEY, Y-YOU!"

Mako blinked. Did he hear that correctly? There was no way that... unless?

Just to be sure, he bent his head forward, and was flabbergasted to see that right in front of him, at exactly the same size he was, was a fair skinned boy just like him. He looked to be the same age, and had similar features to Mako, with a bit of a tan and brown tuft of mangled hair at the top. The central difference between him and this strange boy was that instead of wearing blue briefs, he was wearing red.

That surprise must have shown on his face, as the boy responded with a smirk that was struggling to hold itself together at the edges. "G-guess you didn't expect to be picked on by, s-someone your own size, huh?"

Wow. He looked so utterly terrified. The way his eyes quivered and shook in his sockets as he desperately tried to maneuver his feet around the tiny metal gravel right beside him - Fujinomiya, he guessed - just so adorable to witness. There were shocks of sweats flooding down his chest with each neighborhood he inadvertently brushed against with his toes, and the boy couldn't even make consistent eye contact, looking like he was about to hurl each time he did. Mako couldn't even bring himself to be disgusted with how much a pansy the boy was being, or how clearly out of his depth he was; that's how cute the whole display was.

Looking closer at this unremarkable boy, though, there were details that Mako managed to pick up as well. Even as he shuddered and shook with each breath, there was a pure malice in his eyes that was completely unmistakable to even the dullest and dimmest of souls. They were narrowed into thin slits whenever they contact with his eyes, and his nostrils flared to cartoonish proportions. If this boy was adorable before, now he was practically an angel. Such unbridled rage, such unrelenting hatred: this was exactly what Mako had been missing. This was what he needed to revive the spark that he had before, to finally feel just like a real kaiju.

This boy was the one who was going to save him from a lifetime of agonizing boredom and loneliness. This one was the savior that he had been waiting for.

Just for that, it was only fair that Mako gave everything that he had. Right now, this red-clad boy was staring down the monster that had reduced over half of Tokyo into an uninhabitable wasteland just by stomping around for a bit. It was only fair that he put on a performance, just for him. Give him a real villain to face down, so Mako could have a real kaiju battle - the greatest, most devastating brawl the world would ever know!

"Eh?" Mako replied with a slow, lackadaisical drawl as he reclined further into his throne. It really was quite cozy, much cozier than he would've expected from a giant, pointy rock. "Did you come to join in the fun?

The pure outrage that filled the boy as he said this was one that Mako would treasure for ages. "Y-YOU THINK THIS IS FUN!? HOW COULD YOU! WHY DID YOU DO ALL OF THIS!?"

"Because it was everything that I could've dreamed of." Mako looked straight into Sato's eyes as he said this, not a single trace of remorse or any other emotion to be found.

"You recall encountering a rock, correct?" The way the boy's eyes widened told Make everything he needed to know. "When I touched it, I was absolutely estatic. Finally, I could live my dreams of being a kaiju, just like I always dreamed of. There was just one problem, though..."

Mako swiped his foot in Fujinomiya's direction, sending an avalanche its way that the boy frantically scooped up in his hand. "I was too big. It was so easy to destroy Tokyo. It didn't feel like I was doing anything at all."

"...t-that was the only reason you stopped?" the red-brief boy breathed in horror. "Because you were getting bored?

"C'moooon!" Mako whined in a petulant voice. "I just wanna feel like I'm being challenged! It's no fun if you feel like you're just stomping on a weird metal beach, you know! You're the only one that can make me feel something!"

This kid is genuinely insane! Sato thought to himself. What am I supposed to do against someone like that!?

"Not insane," Mako clarified ("How the hell did you read my mind!?" Sato screeched, only to be ignored) "just aware of reality. Think about it: your thumb's the size of these pathetic little things." He held out his left thumb, and slowly dragged it across a stetch of the mountain, sending another avalanche. This time, Sato yanked Mako's arm away and tackled him against Mount Fuji. The resulting shockwave caused the mountain to crumble, sending an unstoppable wave of rubble that buried Fujinomiya entirely.

"Aww, now look at what you did. You tried to stop me, and you only made things worse. Just like back in Tokyo, you only finished the job."

Mako paused to drink in the dawning horror that was etching itself onto his adversary's face. Man, he was getting sucked into the role. He really did feel like a total monster. "Even if you do manage to beat me, what will you do after? What will you eat, eh? Will you take a chunk from the mountains? No matter what, you have no future left. Everyone in the world will hate and loathe you. It doesn't matter how much you try to fit in: you're far too big to bring anything but pain. They'll be forced to deal with your waste, chocking on every attempt you make to survive, until you eventually starve like a dog.

"You'll be all alone either way, so why not join me? Have a little fun while we can, eh?"

"...I'm not going to let you get away with destroying Tokyo." the boy replied with a waver in his voice. "I'll stop you, even if I have to stay like this for the rest of my life." Right in front of him was the reason that his life had gone to total hell. The reason mom and dad were gone, the reason he didn't have a sister or a best friend anymore. He couldn't let this bastard distract him with his stupid mind games, not when he had no regret what he did.

"I wouldn't want anything else." Mako simply replied, before getting into a fighting stance, his legs spaced evenly apart, and his hands raised in front of his face.

In that moment, Sato realized something. All this time, this kid had treated the encounter like it was a game of pretend. It was as though he thought they were simply friends battling it out in the schoolyard and not gods of destruction that were sinking Japan beneath their feet. Did he even realize what he was doing?

Would Sato have realized, if he hadn't seen the consequences first-hand?

Either way, he had no choice but to fight. "The name's Sato!" the red-briefed boy said, "And you're gonna pay for everything that you've done!"

"Such a common name," Mako groused ("Why the hell do you sound so disappointed!?!") "but I suppose you'll do."
