"I... I don't know." Rei answered honestly. She wasn't expecting the bombshell her new father had just dropped on her so suddenly.
For years she had been just a normal girl living an average life with her family, that is until a monster from her worst nightmare came into her life and ruined everything.
Now her new father was telling her he had the means to make her into a kaiju like the famous monster girl Haruka. This was far too much for her take in all at once.
Sakurai watched her eyes linger to the window of the limbo as the cars on the street zoomed on by. He could see hear the hesitance in her voice but also the curiosity in her eyes.
Rei was interested. Of that he was certain. But at the same time, she was unsure if she wanted her life to undergo another drastic change.
He could understand that. If she wanted to decline his offer then she was free to do so, however that didn't mean he wouldn't try to do a little... convincing.
"I understand your hesitance, my dear. After all, I'm coming at you with a lot here." he began. "But I think you could handle it. Add to that you said it yourself, that kind of size and power in the right hands could be something great to have."
True, she had said that hadn't she? Rei looked towards the man she now called father. "I did say that, but... what if something were to go wrong and I turn into a freak?"
Sakurai merely laughed at Rei's childish concern. "I assure you the process is quite safe. We've crunched the numbers hundreds of times over and run multiple simulations. The chances of anything going awry are less than ten percent."
"But that's still ten percent." the girl sighed. That still didn't sound good enough for her.
"Yes, it is. But think of all the people you'll be able to help. All the lives you'll change unlike a certain monster we both know. You could be the symbol Haruka failed to be. An actual protector of the weak and downtrodden... a hero."
That made Rei perk up. "A hero...?"
Sakurai knew he had something now. "That's right, a hero. This system we live in is broken. You and I both know that. For instance it let your family's killer get off Scott free even though there was a mountain of evidence against him."
Rei's fists began to tighten. She'd been at that trial as a witness yet despite the evidence and her testimony, he still walked. Her heart broke that day. Where was her justice? Where was her family's justice?"
She was so lost in thought she almost didn't register than gentle feel of a hand on her shoulder. "The people need a champion. You could be the hero she isn't and ensure what happened to you doesn't happen to anyone else."
"Yes..." Rei breathed.
"So what say you Rei? Do you want to be a hero? Do you want to actually succeed where the system has failed you?" Sakurai asked, a smile present on his lips. "Do you want to make a difference?"
"Yes!" Rei nearly shouted with tears in her eyes. A chance to make a difference. A chance to make sure no one else suffered like her. A chance to do good!
"So, you accept then."
"Yes!" Rei cried. "Yes, I accept! I'll do it! I'll be a hero!"
Sakurai couldn't be more pleased with himself. "Excellent."
