"Wait!" Tanaka shouted, his voice bringing everything to a grinding halt. Everyone was now staring at the lone general with confusion and curiosity.
"And why is it exactly that we need to stop?" Sakurai asked.
Tanaka was at a loss. He didn't really know, he just blindly acted on instinct. This is why it was important to crunch numbers and exhaust all possible scenarios.
"Yes, wouldn't it be prudent to execute these two now before they become a problem later?" Junko added.
The weary couple flinched at the casual way the blonde scientist spoke of killing them. If it wasn't already clear this woman saw no value in their lives, it was completely confirmed now.
The general didn't know what to do. He had everyone's attention. He'd temporarily staved off the slaughter of innocents. Now he had to find someway to keep the military from making a huge mistake.
"You can't kill them." he said, inwardly sweating bullets at his bold move.
Junko raised an eyebrow. "You still haven't answered as to why. These two spit in the face of our offer and will only become a nuisance later. Immediate termination is the best course of action."
"I agree. Better to get them out of the way now and proceed with our plans."
This wasn't good, Tanaka needed to find some way to persuade them. "But if you kill them then we lose the best leverage we have."
Sakurai looked amused now. "Oh? Please enlighten us Tanaka."
"The cyberization process doesn't guarantee full control of the kaiju." the general began.
Junko looked offended. "How dare you. My project is flawless! I had complete control over Yoshiko when we sent her after Haruka!"
The parents winced at that but the general didn't look deterred. "Ah, but that's where your wrong. I did my own research as well as reviewed the footage and I have to say, you're not as in control as you say you are!"
The look on the blonde's face was venomous. If looks could kill then Tanaka would be dead.
"During the battle, Yoshiko went off more than I think you would've allowed. Not to mention the things she was spewing and taunting Haruka with. She went out of her way to attack her in a more personal way than you'd ever be able to. If you were in control you would've immediately tried to capture her instead of beating her down. Admit it, Yoshiko resisted you!"
Junko looked read to claw the man's eyes out with her bare hands, but was held back by Sakurai. "Please continue."
"If we have Haruka's parents in our grasp she won't even think about resisting. She'll bend the knee and do so gladly. We kill them and she has nothing left to lose. The most dangerous person in the world is the person with nothing left to lose."
Silence filled the room for a brief moment as everyone soaked in what Tanaka was saying. Junko's process was imperfect and the only way to obtain absolute loyalty was through emotional manipulation. Haruka's parents felt sick and Junko still looked pissed as ever. Sakurai on the other hand... clapped. He clapped and clapped as if he was witnessing a college graduation.
"Very good Tanaka my boy. Very good."
"Sir."
"I like what I'm hearing."
