The Remote of Transformation

The choice was a leap of faith, a moment of reckless, illogical abandon that was entirely out of character for Ethan. He wasn't choosing a person; he was choosing an ideal, a fictional construct. He closed his eyes and pictured Zora, the Galactic Vanguard, in all her stoic, muscular glory. He took a deep breath, and slammed his thumb down on the Morphisizer's button.
Instead of a gentle hum, the device let out a bone-jarring electric shriek. A flash of blinding blue light erupted from the core, and a force like a physical hammer slammed into his chest, knocking him back against his desk. He felt a searing, agonizing pain, not like his body was being rearranged, but like it was being vaporized and then reconstituted from pure, alien energy. His spine elongated, his limbs stretched, and a strange, metallic taste filled his mouth. He felt his muscles swell and harden, a painful process of sinew becoming steel. His chest was the strangest part; he could feel two powerful, solid mounds forming, pushing forward with a raw, primal force, solidifying into an athletic C-cup that felt more like armor than flesh. His hips widened and his thighs thickened into powerful, defined columns. The pain was immense, but it was also… instructive. He could feel every single atom in his body shifting, recalibrating, re-forming into a new, stronger pattern.
When the light faded, he lay on the ground, gasping for air. The air smelled different, sharper. The world was a canvas of hyper-real detail, every dust mote visible in the single sliver of light from his window. He scrambled to his feet, his movements shockingly smooth and silent. He felt impossibly strong, every muscle taut and ready. He walked to the mirror and stopped.
Zora stared back at him. Her face was a study in cool indifference, her jawline sharp, her eyes a piercing, unnerving shade of green. Her body was an astonishing work of anatomical perfection, a true warrior's form. His old, gangly frame was gone, replaced by a body that was pure efficiency. His legs were thick with powerful muscle, his stomach was a flat expanse of sculpted abs, and his abundant chest sat high on his frame, a solid, impressive shield. Her hair, which he’d imagined as a fierce ponytail, was a cascade of black silk. The stoicism of her digital personality radiated from his very being. His heart still beat in his chest, but it felt… distant. He felt no panic, no fear, only a detached curiosity.
He reached out to touch the mirror and watched his new hand, long and graceful, move with an unhurried precision. He wanted to test his strength. He reached for his desk, a heavy oak monstrosity. Without thinking, he gripped the edge and lifted, expecting to strain, to grunt. Instead, the desk came up with a disconcerting ease, its legs lifting a few inches off the floor before he dropped it with a loud thud that shook the house. He felt no strain, no effort, only a casual curiosity.
A knock came at his door. “Ethan? What was that noise?” his mom’s voice called from the hallway.
He opened his mouth to reply, and the voice that came out was deep and resonant, a tone that held no warmth or human inflection. “I am… fine,” he said, the words feeling alien on his tongue. The voice sounded nothing like his own, and nothing like Zora’s, but something in the very sound of it made his mom’s footsteps retreat.
