Ethan watched, crouched behind the rose bush, as the ethereal shimmer rippled over Mr. Walcott's body. It was the same effect as before, a soft, almost invisible wave of energy. But this time, nothing happened. Walcott's body didn't change back. The lavender tank top, the tight shorts, the perfectly toned figure—it was all still there. The Morphisizer had failed.

Mr. Walcott’s hand went to his head. He squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them again. He touched the soft fabric of the tank top, his fingers brushing against his breasts. His mind, once so oblivious, now saw the truth. He saw the long, graceful arms, the flat stomach, the slender legs. He was looking at a woman's body, and he knew, with a horrifying certainty, that it was his.

He looked around frantically, his eyes landing on a small puddle of water from a sprinkler on the lawn. He knelt down, his new body moving with a fluid grace he'd never had, and peered at his reflection.

He saw the delicate, feminine face of a young woman, framed by the dark braid. He saw his own bewildered, terrified eyes staring back at him. He slammed his fist into the ground, a cry of pure, unadulterated rage and terror tearing from his throat. "NO!"

Ethan, frozen in place behind the rose bush, watched as his neighbor, his guinea pig, his victim, began to unravel. Walcott scrambled to his feet, running a hand through his hair, his eyes wide with panic. He staggered backward, tripping on the lawn, and fell hard. His new body was a stranger to him, a prison of flesh he didn't recognize.

"My god, what have I done?" Ethan whispered to himself, the Morphisizer feeling less like a tool of genius and more like a loaded gun. Walcott's horrified screams echoed through the quiet cul-de-sac.
