History class, once one of your favourite subjects. You were pretty well versed on prehistory, classical antiquity and all the way towards the end of the middle ages and some of the renaissance era but later history was rather boring to you. Your parents helped feed your curiosity by getting you books, magazines, documentaries on it and even videogames, some of which have been your favourite ever since. Plus, they shared with you the history that they knew about their own ancestors, as they wanted you to feel the connection with your family in spite of living quite far of the ancestral homeland for either side of the family. The reason why it has become soured now couldn't be any stranger, yet oddly specific. It goes back 2 years, not long after 10th grade started...
[Flashback]
The day had barely started and it was looking like it'd be a good, normal-ish day. There were your friends' playful antics as usual but nothing to truly detract from it. History classes this year were going to be interesting since they were gonna cover some of your strongest suites: ancient history about the whole American continent, which you had games like Age of Empires to thank for your knowledge on the matter. You and your friends had just entered the classroom along with the majority of the students. Ms. Coleman usually ran a couple of minutes late because she either tripped on the way or grabbed a coffee before coming in but it was still best to be on time to avoid getting in trouble with Arianna, who personally patrolled the hallways when she could.
Lillian and Jen sat very close to you on either side while Zuemy sat next to Lillian and Cindy next to Jen. Most of the classrooms had this "team setup" where it was a long shared desk for 4-5 students and you always sat with your friends, which led to many more teasing moments. At that time, Lillian was not-so-subtly pressing her doughy hip against yours while Jen leaned her chest against your shoulder from the side as well, making you struggle hard to keep any composure. Zuemy was delighted to keep adding fuel to the fire, teasing the three of you in ways that made Lillian and Jen even more competitive. Looking at Cindy, you weren't certain but you got the slight impression that she was feeling left out.
Moments later, Ms. Coleman arrived in a rush with a latte in hand, greeting the class and apologizing for the delay. Things settled back into normalcy for the most part but you still struggled with the soft squish on both sides and on the upper and lower parts of your body, that warmth kept flowing into you and it almost felt like it bound you in place. Pleasant but you knew your voice could break if you had to speak feeling that flustered.
Suddenly, the entire atmosphere of the class froze as there was an unexpected entrance. Two girls walked in, one slightly tall for a girl while the other was notably shorter. Oddly enough, the first girl looked like a princess that walked out straight out of a medieval or fairy tale book. She wore a red tank top that looked way too fancy, even fancier than Brooke's clothes with a black and red skirt that looked like it reminisced of traditional flamenco dress. Her hair, bright golden, was mostly in a single large braid with one or two smaller ones that wrapped around her head and looked like a crown. As for her body, she looked rather slender up top with some curves below the waist, not as much as even Veronica though. The look in her face was smug, you didn't want to judge harshly but she looked like she was extremely arrogant and you hoped you were wrong.
The other girl looked far more average, with straight black hair and relatively large, round glasses. Overall pretty petite figure as well, both were fairly pale. This black-haired girl was carrying a guitar in a case but nobody seemed to really pay attention to it. Ms. Coleman then told the class that these two were new students that would join your class and then asked them to introduce themselves. The second girl went ahead and introduced herself as "Marcia Ana Cerda" And your struggle to keep straight increased a thousandfold because her name could be translated to "Martian Pig (female)". Looking at your sides, you noticed that both Jen and Lillian were also trying to hold back their laughter 'So, I wasn't the only one that caught it' you thought, mildly relieved.
Marcia seemed to be rather meek and gave the bare minimum for an introduction and then she let the other girl proceed. To everyone's surprise, Marcia then took the guitar out of its case and began playing some music that sounded very much traditional Spanish while the blonde cleared her throat.
"Good morning, plebeians" She began, already with an overflowing haughtiness to her voice. Yep, this was going to be one of those days. "Feast your eyes, for you are meeting the future Queen of Spain!" She said while Marcia's guitar playing intensified. You and Cindy exchanged looks, this girl might as well have walked out of a manga.
"Huh? Spain has a queen?" "I thought only England had one" "A queen? At this time of year? In this state? In this school of all places?" "Yeah I call bullshit on this one bruh" And many more whispers could be heard. However, rather than appearing insulted, this girl laughed "Ohohoho~" while fanning herself with a very expensive-looking feathery fan.
"Why, yes! Spain still has a monarchy and I'm its rightful claimant... Whatever the media might try to lead you to believe notwithstanding" She said and then pulled what looked like a pendant that had been tucked inside her shirt, holding it in front of everybody so they could see. It was a silver shield with a gold border, featuring two purple lions standing on their hind legs facing each other, with a gold castle below and in the middle. Your eyes widened, that was an emblem that you had only seen in books and some games, never expecting to see it in person, in real life...
"My name is Isabel, of the noble house of Trastámara, the original rulers of Spain!" She exclaimed "This here is the family's crest, our coat of arms"
Even Ms. Coleman was caught off-guard, blinking a few times, wondering if this was another strange dream that the coffee had failed to wake her from "W-wait, the house of Trastámara? Really? Hasn't it been extinct for about 400 years?" Isabel laughed and looked at Ms. Coleman, showing her the family emblem as well
"That's what they want everyone to think. They've tried to sweep us under the rug but we're still here and still hold a legitimate claim to the throne, far more so than those idiotic French Bourbons for sure!"
Meanwhile, everyone was baffled at her family crest but most weren't too familiar with its significance. Your friends and soon, most of the class then stared at you, the resident History expert, wondering about your opinion on it.
"Holy crap, it's real" You said. What were the chances a girl would falsify such a specific emblem and flash it openly. Plus, if her surname weren't actually that, you were sure that Ms. Coleman would've called her out. Upon hearing you, most of the class gasped and you practically felt Isabel's gaze directly on you.
Time appeared to have slowed down to a crawl and the next few seconds felt like an eternity until Ms. Coleman spoke to break the silence:
"Well, that's... very interesting. We'll be studying the history of the American continent so I'm sure you'll be able to provide us with a unique insight from your particular perspective"
"Of course, I've been well educated on the topic" Isabel replied "Though, we could just skip to 1492, that's when it really gets good"
"Wait, what does that year have to do with her?" Someone wondered aloud.
"Well, duh! Ever heard of... wait, what's his name in English again?" She asked Marcia, who approached her and whispered into her ear while still playing the guitar "Ah, I see. Thanks Marcia... Ahem! Cristopher Columbus, ever heard of that guy? Yeah, WE were the ones who paid for the trip"
"Holy crap" It was heard from several students and other similar disbelief remarks.
"And of course, we ordered the exploration and conquest of these lands, which is why to this day, 500 years later they still speak our tongue, follow our faith and as much as some may dislike it, they bear our legacy" She said with an unbelievable level of smugness, such that it made your stomach turn. This couldn't possibly get any worse.
"I see. It's gonna take a few months before we reach that stage but we'll be looking forward to it" Ms. Coleman said "And I believe it will real interesting, we'll be able to get 2 distinct perspectives on these topics indeed"
"Hmm? What do you mean?" Isabel asked.
"Blaise here has told us that he's a living descendant from the Aztecs and has been pretty passionate about precolumbian history when we've had it on past years" Ms. Coleman clearly had an innocent intent but you just felt as if a target appeared on your back and it immediately was hit by many knives just as Isabel stared at you once more.
"Oh, really~? Sounds like it's going to be very, very fun" The smug grin that she gave you made you wince. It was crystal clear that it was a bully that had just been delivered her punching back for years to come on a silver platter.
'Goddammit' You sighed quietly...
