Jonas circled the convention center, keeping close to the building's exterior. The main entrance was a lost cause — too many guards, too much security, and he had no shoes, no badge, no nothing.

There has to be a loading dock. A service entrance. Something.

He found it around the back: a concrete ramp leading down to a pair of industrial metal doors, propped open with a wedge. A delivery truck was parked nearby, its rear doors gaping open, and two workers in matching polo shirts were unloading boxes onto a hand truck.

Jonas's heart rate spiked.

Okay. Look casual. You belong here.

He walked toward the open doors, trying to project an air of confidence he absolutely did not feel. The women's body made his stride shorter, his hips swaying in a way he couldn't control, and he felt exposed — like everyone could see the lie written all over his face.

One of the workers looked up. "Hey — you lost?"

"No," Jonas said, and his voice came out steady. "I'm with the convention. Guest relations. They sent me to check on a delivery."

The worker squinted at him. "What delivery?"

"Uh —" Jonas's mind raced. "The one you're unloading right now. They wanted me to make sure the exclusive merchandise arrived intact."

A beat of silence. The worker exchanged a glance with his colleague.

Then he laughed. "Nice try, but I've been doing this run for three years, and guest relations has never once sent someone to the loading dock. You're sneaking in, aren't you?"
