The game was a nail-biter. Jay Robinson, 45, beer in hand, sat on the couch with his fifteen-year-old son, Kyle, a lanky kid with his dad’s sandy brown hair and a face full of braces. The TV blared with the roar of a digitized crowd. On-screen, a quarterback in a navy blue jersey dodged a sack, scrambling for a first down.
“Go, go, go!” Kyle yelled, his eyes glued to the screen.
Jay, a sports fan from way back, felt his own heart pound. He loved these moments with his son. He was a good dad, a great dad even, if he did say so himself. He had a solid job as a mid-level manager at a paper company, a decent house in the suburbs, and a friendly-but-firm dad-bod that was a permanent fixture after forty. He was, in every sense of the word, a normal guy.
But while his son was lost in the game, Jay was half-distracted by his phone. The screen lit up with a text from his best friend, Mark.
Mark: You gotta check out this app. It’s wild.
Jay: What app? You trying to get my credit card info again?
Mark: LOL. No, man, it’s called Swaptyx. My cousin used it. Says it’s a total game-changer.
Jay snorted. "Swaptyx? Sounds like a cheap energy drink," he mumbled to himself, but his fingers were already typing a search query into the app store.
"What's that, Dad?" Kyle asked, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"Nothing, just Mark being a weirdo again," Jay replied, his attention split between the game and his phone. He found the app, a simple logo with a stylized DNA helix, and downloaded it.
Jay: Okay, I got it. What does it do?
Mark: It's a body-swapping app. You can try out being someone else for a few hours. A celebrity, an athlete, whoever. It's crazy popular.
Jay laughed out loud. “Yeah, right,” he said, but the idea, however ridiculous, intrigued him. He wasn't a celebrity or an athlete, but he had a pretty good life. He'd never wondered what it was like to be someone else. He'd always been happy being Jay.
“What’s the app, Dad?” Kyle asked again, his curiosity piqued.
“It’s a body-swapping app, apparently,” Jay said, scrolling through the app’s features. He saw a few celebrity profiles, a handful of athletes. He even saw a pop-up that said "Featured Swap: The Brazilian Bikini Model." He shook his head and scrolled past it.
"Whoa, really?" Kyle's eyes were wide. "You should try it! See what it's like to be, like, Patrick Mahomes."
Jay scoffed. "And get stuck in his body forever? No thanks. I'm good right here," he said, patting his beer belly. The app’s interface was sleek, almost too easy. He was just about to close it when his thumb, slick with condensation from the beer bottle, slipped. He fumbled the phone, and his thumb, with the kind of cruel, accidental precision only the universe could orchestrate, hit the "Swap Now" button.
A jolt, like a static shock, shot through his body. The lights flickered, and the sound of the game faded into a distant hum. The familiar scent of stale beer and popcorn was replaced by something else, something sweet and tropical, like coconut and sunblock.
