The May 12 incident took place on May 12, 2028, when an experiment at Swaptyx's central laboratories in Palo Alto went awry, resulting in every male in a 20-mile radius being suddenly and involuntarily transformed into a woman. (Some still colloquially refer to this incident and those affected as "Valley Girls", due to the rise of beautiful women transformed in the vicinity of Silicon Valley.)

The public outcry was intense - as many of the people transformed were unhappy about their transformation - and it took Swaptyx a long time to document what happened, and only some of the people involved were able to be changed back, while others received vouchers for other Swaptyx offerings. Lawsuits came against the company.
