At first, the chaos distracted Leo from how weird it all felt. The crowd. The lights. The overwhelming amount of glitter on his thighs.
But halfway through the night, it hit him: this is someone’s real body. Every laugh, every catcall, every time a guy’s hand lingered just a little too long on his lower back—he felt exposed. Vulnerable. Seen in a way he never had as a tall, forgettable philosophy grad student.
He pulled away from the circle of dancers and ducked into the stairwell, panting. His chest heaved. His chest bounced. It hurt.
Someone came in after him.
“Lola?”
It was a girl with soft brown eyes and a worried frown. “You okay?”
“I—I don’t think so,” Leo whispered, hugging himself.
She stepped closer and gently touched his arm. “You’re not acting like yourself. You don’t need to keep the act going all night, y’know?”
Leo blinked.
The girl leaned in and whispered, “Come crash in my room. I’ll help you get out of those heels.”
He nodded, speechless.
