You stare at Becky’s prone form…and you cannot help but be concerned. She might be seriously injured…
Deciding to go with your gut, you push forward and call 911. You quickly try to explain to them the situation at hand; you struggle a bit with providing an address as you had never been given one. After answering some questions, such as the name of the homeowner, you’re able to provide them enough info for them to figure out the address. They assure you they will be there as soon as possible; before hanging up they ask for your name.
“Ah, my name is Hunter Woods. I’m a…a friend of the family.”
“Okay, Mr. Woods. We’ll be there as soon as we can. If you can, try to check on her condition. You’re on speaker phone right?” You grimace “Ah…yeah I am. Let me…check.”
You shimmy down the desk, mostly freefalling but slowing your descent by gripping the table legs as you fall. Once at the bottom, you rush over to Becky’s head. With trepidation, you climb up her face to listen for breathing.
“She…she’s breathing!” You yell as loudly as you can.
“Alright, Mr. Woods thank you. I know you’re a tiny so you cannot do much but if you can get the assistance of anyone else to elevate her head, that would be the best next step for her while you wait.”
You listen intently, already thinking of how Quinn should be on her way…some time had passed since that last conversation so maybe she is close by. Indeed, not but 15 minutes later, you hear the front door open along with Quinn shouting “Mom! I’m here! We need to have that talk now!” You rush towards the stairs, thankfully nearby, and yell down “Quinn! Thank god you’re here! Come up quick, your mom needs help!”
“Hunter!? So, she DID take you!” Her voice was full of anger and panic as she rushed up the stairs. Before the final step, she quickly snatches you and pulls you close. “I am so so sorry Hunter! I never should have left you alone with her, I…I…” You quickly yell up “Thank you Quinn but now’s not the time! Your mother was trying to get me out of the vents when she fell from her stool; she’s injured. She’s breathing but it looks like she hit her head pretty hard. I’ve already called 911 and they’re on the way but they told me we need to keep her head elevated.”
Quinn, for her part, stares at you with amazement before noticing her mother lying on the floor. “Mom!?” She cries out while rushing over. She gently lies you on the ground before calling her mother’s name once more. “Please Quinn, keep her head elevated but try not to move her too much!” Quinn, again startled by your voice, nods firmly before rushing into the master bedroom and grabbing pillows. With these, she can prop Becky’s head up comfortably. As you two inspect her, the bleeding seems to have already died down. The bumps still looked nasty and you do not regret calling for an ambulance.
“…Hunter…why did you call for an ambulance and not the police?” Quinn softly asks you after a few minutes pass. “I would have completely understood why you’d that.”
“Well…I know that…your mother is still important to you. I also can’t just look away from someone who’s hurt and in trouble…especially not a woman.” You say, trying to be a bit more cheerful in this somber occasion.
Quinn scoffs and smiles down at you. “Thank you, Hunter…I know she’s sick in the head, but I still wouldn’t want to lose her.”
With those final words, you both enter a deep silence before eventually sirens can be heard approaching the house.
One week passes
Against all expectations, you didn’t explain the full situation to the EMTs who arrived. Honestly, you felt that you should have thrown the book at Becky but…well, she was injured. It didn’t feel right at the time and Quinn seemed to be more fragile than you had assumed. She might take losing her mother, to prison or death, a little too hard. You decided to keep your mouth shut in the meantime.
After the ambulance had arrived, they took a statement from you. Quinn, before they had arrived, tried her best to encourage you do whatever you felt necessary. She made it clear you could get her mother in trouble and it would be exactly what she deserved but you decided against it for now. At the very least, you can use this day as leverage against her if she ever comes back for you…which she well might. After everything was wrapped up, days passed by in relative peace. Quinn brought you home to Avery and Morgan’s frantic panic. Quinn had finally had a chance to explain the situation after they could not find you and stoked their fears that her mother may have abducted you. After explaining the situation and emphasizing you just wanted some peace for a bit before deciding on anything, they reluctantly agree. Eventually, you learn Quinn’s mother had a concussion and she would be out in just a few days after they monitor her for any brain injury.
One day, Quinn approaches you apprehensively as you sit browsing TV in the living room. “Hey Hunter…I have something to ask of you. You see, my mom is…wanting to see you.” You take on a look of apprehension which Quinn quickly notes. “Please just listen; she just wants to talk. In addition, I promise I will be there with you the entire time, so she won’t be able to try anything.” Reluctantly, with Quinn’s assurances, you agree to the meeting. You both drive to her home and…
