The warm steam of the hot springs clung to the air, wrapping around the group like a comforting blanket. Max sat on the edge of the rock, his tiny legs dangling over the edge, trying to ignore the occasional splash of water that reached him. The women’s laughter echoed off the stones, a symphony of amusement that only deepened his embarrassment.
“Honestly, Max,” Lyra said, her voice dripping with playful mockery as she leaned back against the edge of the pool, her dark hair slick against her shoulders. “You’re missing out on all the fun. This water is amazing. You sure you don’t want to join us?”
Max’s face burned, and he shook his head quickly, his voice squeaky and nervous. “N-no, I’m fine right here, thanks.”
Aella let out a deep chuckle, her muscular arms resting on the edge of the pool as she smirked at him. “Come on, Max. You’re already stuck with us. Might as well enjoy yourself. Or are you too scared to get close?”
Mira, ever the peacemaker, shot them both a disapproving look. “Leave him alone, you two. He’s had enough teasing for one day.” Her soft, soothing voice carried a hint of guilt as she glanced at Max, her large, round eyes filled with empathy.
Max avoided her gaze, focusing instead on the rippling water. Why does she have to be so nice? he thought, his heart throbbing with a mix of gratitude and discomfort. It was almost harder to handle her kindness than their teasing. At least with Aella and Lyra, he knew where he stood. But Mira… Mira was different. Her concern made him feel even more vulnerable.
The group eventually emerged from the hot springs, their laughter fading as they dried off and dressed. The cool night air brushed against their skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of the springs. Max sat on a nearby rock, his tiny form shivering slightly as he waited for them to finish.
Lyra sauntered over to him, her lithe figure silhouetted against the moonlight. She leaned down, her sharp eyes glinting with mischief. “You survived, huh? Guess you’re tougher than you look.”
Max managed a weak smile, though his heart was still racing. “Yeah, I guess so.”
Mira and Aella joined them soon after, their voices carrying the remnants of their earlier laughter. As they began to walk back toward the inn, the conversation shifted.
“So,” Aella said, her deep voice cutting through the quiet night. “What’s next? We’ve got some gold, but we’re not exactly ready to take on the demon king.”
Lyra smirked, her arms crossed over her chest as she walked beside them. “We should focus on leveling up. Find some quests, maybe hunt down a few monsters. Get stronger before we try anything too crazy.”
Mira nodded, her long hair swaying gently as she walked. “That makes sense. We need to be prepared if we’re going to face something as powerful as the demon king.”
Max listened quietly, his tiny form perched on Mira’s shoulder. Leveling up? Monsters? What am I even supposed to do in all of this? He glanced up at the women towering over him, feeling more out of place than ever.
“What about you, Max?” Lyra asked, her voice teasing. “Got any bright ideas?”
Max blinked, caught off guard by the sudden attention. “Uh… I-I don’t know. I’m still trying to figure out how to, you know, not get squished.”
Aella chuckled, her deep voice rumbling with amusement. “Fair enough. But you’re part of the team now, whether you like it or not. We’ll need you when we get into trouble.”
Mira smiled softly, her large eyes filled with warmth. “He’s right, Max. You’ve already helped us so much. We’ll figure this out together.”
Max nodded, though he couldn’t help but feel a pang of anxiety. Together? How am I supposed to keep up with them?
As they reached the inn, the group settled into their room, the warm glow of the fireplace casting long shadows across the walls. Max sat on the edge of the table, his tiny legs swinging as he watched the women discuss their plans.
“We should head to the forest,” Lyra suggested, leaning back in her chair with a confident smirk. “Plenty of monsters there, and it’s not too far from here.”
Aella nodded in agreement. “Good thinking. We’ll leave first thing in the morning.”
Mira glanced at Max, her soft voice filled with concern. “What about Max? We’ll need to be careful with him out there.”
Lyra’s smirk widened, her eyes glinting with mischief. “Don’t worry, Mira. I’ll keep an eye on him.”
Max’s face flushed, and he quickly looked away, trying to hide his discomfort. Great. Just what I needed.
As the conversation continued, Max found himself lost in his thoughts. How am I supposed to survive out there? I’m three inches tall, for crying out loud. His tiny hands clenched into fists, a surge of determination rising within him. I can’t just sit back and let them carry me. I need to find a way to contribute.
The night stretched on, the fire crackling softly as the women continued to plan their next move. Max sat quietly, his mind racing with possibilities. Maybe there’s a way I can help them. If I can transform into clothing, maybe I can do more than just buff their stats. Maybe I can…
“Max,” Mira’s soft voice interrupted his thoughts, pulling him back to the present. “Are you okay? You look lost in thought.”
Max blinked, his tiny face flushing as he looked up at her. “Uh, yeah. Just… thinking.”
Mira smiled gently, her large eyes filled with warmth. “We’ll figure this out together, Max. You’re not alone in this.”
Max nodded, though his heart was pounding in his chest. Not alone? That’s exactly how I feel.
As the night deepened, the group finally settled into bed, their voices fading into the quiet hum of sleep. Max lay on the table, his tiny form curled up in a corner, his mind still racing. Tomorrow, we head into the forest. I’ll need to be ready.
But as he closed his eyes, one thought lingered in his mind. How am I supposed to keep up with them when I’m only three inches tall?
