"I'm so sorry about this, Jake," Cassie said. You were naked save for your swim trunks. Cassie was holding you under a running sink and scrubbing you with soap. She wasn't gentle either as the lipstick marks that covered your body proved especially hard to wash off. But you knew it wasn't how roughly she was handling you that she was apologizing for. She was apologizing about you being trapped for two days with the biggest bully you'd ever known, the same one now lounging by her family's pool.
"I had no idea my mom was inviting her over. I can't believe she did that! I still can't believe she mailed you to her! When she first told me what she did, I was beyond angry! Especially after what your aunt had threatened to do to you. But my mom said she did it to help you get over your "irrational" fear of your aunt. She refused to tell me where she mailed you, and I didn't want to get your mom involved, but I swear if I hadn't heard from you by the end of the week I would've called the police!"
"It's ok!" you said, sputtering on water and suds. "Everything turned out fine! And your mom was right. It was... silly... to be so afraid of Tara."
"I don't know, Jake," Cassie said, frowning. She kept scrubbing another minute after the lipstick marks had disappeared as if to rub off some lingering taint you couldn't see. She was eventually satisfied and turned off the faucet, handing you a paper towel to dry off. As you dried yourself, Cassie kept talking, "After everything you've told me about her, how inconsiderate and selfish and just plain mean your aunt can be... how could my mother think sending you to her was a good idea? It was almost like she was trying to get rid of you!"
You laughed at the notion. "That's ridiculous! I'm too likable, you know that!"
"But Jake--"
"No, Cassie, please listen to me. I think you're blowing this way out of proportion. I really do believe your mother was trying to help me in her own way. So please don't hold this against her. The last thing I want is for me to come between you and your family."
Cassie considered your words then smiled. "You're probably right. I'm being too hard on her. Mom's always known what she's doing before, and it's not like she'd intentionally do anything to hurt the man I love. I just need to trust her judgement. Thanks, Jake!"
"Anytime, beautiful," you said, smiling back at her.
"You know," she said playfully, "now that you're all cleaned up, I think it's time I gave you a proper "Welcome Home" present."
"What did you have in mind, future Mrs. Bigg-Smalls?"
Cassie giggled and lowered her palm for you to step on. She raised you to her face and both of you closed your eyes and puckered your lips. The difference between Cassie's kiss and Tara's had been as different as night and day. Cassie's was gentle, loving yet full of passion despite her restraint. She smelled like vanilla and lavender. Unfortunately it was cut tragically short by a knock at the door.
"Cassie," her mother called from outside the bathroom. "The pizza man's here. The rest of us have already changed into our swimsuits. Would you mind paying?"
"Ok!"
Kimberly stood outside in a white two piece with a fistful of bills. "You take the money," Ms. Smalls said, handing over the cash. "And I'll take Jake," she said, grabbing you before her daughter could react.
"Mom, you don't need to take Jake. We'll pay together then meet you guys by the pool."
"Hmm, and just where will Jake be while you're changing?" You both blushed at that which Ms. Smalls noticed. "Mmm, that's what I thought. Sorry young lady but engagement or no. My house, my rules. You will both follow proper decorum. Jake will come with me. You can bring us the food then join us once you're changed."
"Yes, mom," Cassie said, sighing.
As your fiancee walked away, you were left gripped in the fist of Ms. Smalls. She didn't move from the hallway and you were beginning to feel awkward, especially since she was half naked and you didn't want to stare. You hadn't been alone with your future mother-in-law since the night she'd mailed you express delivery.
"It's good to see you again, Jake," she said, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Your aunt told me all about how you bested her challenges. You've impressed me with your resilience."
"Thanks," you said uneasily. "I'm just lucky she was willing to renegotiate our deal."
"Lucky? Oh, Jake, no! You don't honestly believe that I ever would've sent you to your aunt if I suspected she truly meant to keep you away from Cassie forever, do you?"
"Of course not," you said, but the doubt in your voice was plain.
You may have insisted otherwise to Cassie in order to maintain the loving relationship between mother and daughter, and to still get your future mother-in-law's blessing for your union, but a nagging doubt had wormed its way into the back of your mind. Had Ms. Smalls truly been trying to get rid of you? You wanted to believe she'd been trying to help you somehow by mailing you to Tara... but if that was the case, why had her claim to her daughters about helping you overcome your "irrational" fear of your aunt run so counter to what she'd said as she sealed you in the envelope?
“So Jake, in that letter you said you wanted to make up for this right? Well, as I recall you, as part of your promise, agreed to be kept in your aunt’s butt if you ever did break your promise correct?” And she'd said it so severely it had made you freeze in the envelope. “You did say in your letter that you hoped to make it up to her right? Well it seems to me that you owe her the option of making good on your deal, if she decides to decline then you would be all good but if she wants to follow through isn’t that the only way you can make it up to her?” And again she'd sounded so serious you could only nod your head in dumbfounded agreement. You only fully realized the ramifications of that action when Kimberly closed the envelope with you inside. Trapped in darkness, you heard her say, “Don’t worry I will let Cassie know where you went. I also put down my phone number on the letter in case your aunt doesn’t want to collect on your bargain and I’ll make sure you get sent back to Cassie on my dollar!”
At no point did she ever sound certain you had nothing to fear from breaking your promise to Tara. In fact, the way Ms. Smalls phrased it, it sounded like she thought you were honor bound to live up your aunt's ass if Tara did decide to collect on your deal! What would've happened if Tara had decided to just keep you like she threatened? Or had rigged her challenges? What kind of horrible fate would've await you then?!
"Jake," Kimberly said sympathetically, sensing your doubt. "Maybe it didn't seem that way at the time but I really was trying to help you. From all the stories you told us, I know you have a... complicated relationship with your aunt. But other than your mother, she's really the only family you have! I've talked with her and seen her good side, something you left out of your stories. Do you really want to live the rest of your life in fear of her? Or do you want to repair your relationship while you can? You've already proven to me you're a man of your word. And a man of resilience. Now it's time to prove to me you're a man of forgiveness as well."
Ms. Smalls words resonated with you. You had told Cassie she was being ridiculous to think so poorly of her mother but here you were now, being just as silly! Kimberly Smalls methods may be unorthodox but she really did have your best interests at heart.
"You're right, Ms. Smalls," you said, much more confidently. "I'm so sorry for ever doubting you."
"It's quite alright Jake," Kimberly said. Behind her frosty smile, she thought, "After all, if I had my way, you'd be living as your aunt's permanent butt toy right now. But there are other ways to end this engagement."
Kimberly had been so disappointed when Tara called to tell her that she was mailing her would-be son-in-law back. However, unlike her nephew, the woman wasn't stupid. She had known full well the only reason why Kimberly would mail Jake to her with that letter was to end his betrothal to her daughter. And Tara was eager to help... for a price.
"After all," Tara had told her over the phone as she sat atop her nephew in the post office parking lot, "why just do something you love for free when you can also be paid for it?"
Tara Bigg had proven herself fiendishly clever. Surprisingly, Kimberly found herself liking the woman more and more. Together they devised the plan to have her visit the Smalls household. Once there, Tara would do what she did best: humiliate Jake. Kimberly was sure once her daughter saw how much of a pathetic pushover her prospective husband was, Cassie would break off their engagement in no time. Whether Tara had further plans for Jake afterwards or was just in it for the paycheck, Kimberly had no idea, but so long as Jake was out of her precious daughter's life, she didn't care either way.
And now it was time to put their plan into action.
"While I appreciate your apology, Jake," Kimberly said, "I'm not the one you need to apologize to. You've done quite a lot of damage to your aunt's reputation among my daughters. I expect you to do everything in your power to make it up to her. No matter what she asks with absolutely no complaints."
You shifted uneasily in Ms. Smalls fist. The concept "Do anything Tara says without complaining" was a frightening one. But Ms. Smalls hadn't led you wrong so far.
"You're right, Ms. Smalls. I will."
"Excellent!" she said with genuine happiness.
Outside, Maddie and Sophie were already playing games in the pool. Tara was tanning on a pool chair in her way-too-small, red, white and blue bikini. She lowered her thick sunglasses as she saw Ms. Smalls approach with you in hand. You gulped. This was going to be a long month.
What happens next?
"I had no idea my mom was inviting her over. I can't believe she did that! I still can't believe she mailed you to her! When she first told me what she did, I was beyond angry!
