"What... the... fuck?"
It was the only thing you could think to say upon looking up at your grinning aunt as you were sprawled out on her palm. You would've pinched yourself to see if you were dreaming, only Tara acted first by clenching you in her fist. She gripped you so tight your eyes practically bulged out of their sockets like a stress toy. The pain was real. This was very clearly no dream.
So what had happened? Was this just another of your aunt's cruel pranks? Did she purposefully address the letter wrong so it'd be returned to her? But no, looking around, you recognized you were on the familiar front porch of the Smalls house. It was on this very spot five days ago where you made your first impression with your would-be mother-in-law by being squashed under her flip flop.
There was only one explanation. You were at Cassie's house. And so was Tara.
"Surprised?" your aunt laughed. "I paid extra to track the progress of my package. Left me plenty of time to know when you'd get here."
"What are you doing here?!" By the end of your sentence your voice was a high-pitched shrill you were positive only dogs could here.
Tara flashed a shit-eating grin. "Come on, squirt. You didn't really think I was gonna let you off the hook that easy, did ya? You think I'd be satisfied with only two measly days to "catch up" with my favorite little nephew? I've barely seen you since you ran off to college. You don't call, you don't write, you never visit. It's almost like you're avoiding me," she said with a dangerous smirk. You gulped. "And now you're off for a whole month from college and you're spending it with your girlfriend's family instead of your blood relatives? How's that supposed to make us feel? So, I decided to take matters into my own hands! On the way to the post office, I rang up your girlfriend's mom and told her how important I think it is for the Bigg and the Smalls to get to know each other. And she just thought it was a wonderful idea for your mom and I to come visit. However, there was just one little caveat. Kimberly thought it would be a good idea if I came down first before we invited your mom."
"What?" you asked, genuinely confused.
"I thought it was strange too. Until she told me why." Her gaze fell on you severely and you felt a chill run down your spine. "I know you've told them more stories about me. Not just about the night we met but about all kinds of our exploits over the years."
You gulped. "Now Tara," you said, voice shaking. "The only story you swore me to secrecy was the one about the night we met--"
"And you thought so long as you kept your trap shut about the first one I'd be just fine with you telling any old story about me? Nah-huh. That's not how this works, runt. You made me look like quite a monster in front of my future in-laws. When I first walked through that door with my bags last night, your girl and her sisters acted like I was the devil! Now how are we supposed to be one, big, happy family after you accuse me of doing such horrible things to you? You never even told them one story about any of the good things I did for you!"
"What good things?" You said it before you could stop yourself.
Tara just shook her head. "Tut-tut-tut. So small minded... Literally!" she said with a snort of laughter. "Luckily, your future mother-in-law can see the bigger picture. She was convinced that those adventures we had over the years were not the actions of a cruel bully but the tough love of a devoted aunt who was trying to teach her nephew to be strong enough to face a world that will never coddle him."
Your eyes practically rolled out of your head.
"That's why Kimberly insisted that before we invite your mother to join us, I come by first for a couple days so we can... clear the air. That way you can repair the damage you've inflicted on my reputation."
"But... if you were just going to be coming here anyway, why did you mail me instead of taking me on the flight?!"
"What? And pay for a whole nother seat for a shortie like you? It would've been like paying for a doll to fly! Although I suppose I could've smuggled you on board somewhere on my body."
You shuddered at the thought. You couldn't believe it. This was supposed to be a vacation for just you and Cassie, a chance to get to know her family. Instead now you'd have to spend the rest of the month with the worst member of your own family!
Your thoughts were interrupted by the front door opening. Your eyes lit up as you saw the beautiful face of your betrothed! Cassie!
"JAKE!" she said as she saw you. She was about to rush out the door but her mother was right behind her and put a restraining hand on her daughter's shoulder.
"Now, now, Cassie," Ms. Smalls said. "Don't interrupt. Jake's aunt is just happy to see him again."
"Her?" Cassie said, barely able to contain her outrage. "She just had him for two days!"
"Yes, but even a second away from him is too long! How could I not be so excited to see my adowable, widdle Jakie-poo again?!" Tara said in exaggerated baby talk. She gripped you tighter and raised you to her face. "Give your auntie some sugar!"
Before you could recoil, Tara puckered her painted-red lips and drew you close. It was only Cassie and Kimberly's presence that stopped you screaming in terror. Instead you put on as brave a face as you could as Tara's lips engulfed your entire head! You hoped it would be over quick but she sucked your entire face into her mouth slapping you up and down with her tongue. Her breath stank of the cherry vape pen she smoked. After five seconds she pulled you away and you let out a gasp for air, only for Tara to pull you back in for several more kisses, each accompanying with exaggerated kissing noises from your aunt.
"Mwuah! Mwuah! Mwuah! Mwuah! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm-WUAH!"
Your head, having been pulled into her mouth on the last kiss, came free with an audible pop! Your face and torso were covered with red lipstick marks and slimy with saliva. You were amazed that out of all the unspeakably awful things your aunt had done to you over the decades, this was what made you feel the most unclean. What little of you that wasn't red from her lipstick was blushing furiously as Cassie looked at you, both embarrassed and outraged on your behalf.
"Oopsie," Tara said insincerely. "Got a little carried away. Sorry, Cass. He's all yours."
Without a word of warning Tara tossed you to Cassie like a rag doll. Surprised, Cassie fumbled a bit but managed to catch you in her hands. She was just about to bring you to her face to kiss you herself, only to pull back as she realized you were covered with your aunt's lipstick and spit. Instead she just clutched you to her chest and pet your back like a frightened animal. You were disappointed that you were robbed of the welcome back kiss you'd been dreaming of but you honestly couldn't blame her. Maybe after you rinsed off in the sink she'd be willing to kiss you again.
"See, Cassie?" Kimberly was saying calmly to her daughter. "You had nothing to worry about. Tara was never going to keep Jake. She loves him just as much as you do."
"Yeah, right," Cassie snapped.
"Now young lady," Kimberly said, frostily, frowning at Cassie's outburst, "that is no way to talk to a guest. Much less the way you should be talking to someone who will be family soon. That's exactly why I insisted Tara join us for the month. So we can put all these misunderstandings to rest. Jake, you love your aunt don't you?"
Kimberly looked at you scrutinizingly. Despite everything you still wanted to impress your would-be mother-in-law. You were sure that Tara had manipulated her somehow. It wasn't her fault that she'd been conned. And she'd invited your aunt all the way down here. How petty would you look if you said no?
"Of course I love her," you forced yourself to say.
"And all those stories you told us about her. Surely they weren't all bad, were they? You must've had some fun with your aunt?"
No actually, they'd all been a complete nightmare. But again, you knew the answer Kimberly wanted to hear and so you said, "Yeah, they were... pretty fun actually..."
"JAKE!" Cassie said with a gasp.
"There you have it," Kimberly said matter-of-factly. "Jake embellished for the sake of a good story. I think we can all relate to that. But Tara deserves a chance for the family to get to know the real her. And Jake, you owe it to your aunt to show us all her positive qualities. It's just one step closer to us being one happy family. Right?"
Under the imperious gaze of Ms. Smalls you could do nothing but nod your head. Even Cassie couldn't withstand her mother's stare. "Yes, mom," she sighed.
Over Kimberly's shoulder, you caught your aunt's sly smile.
"Excellent!" Kimberly said, clapping her hands with the matter resolved. "Now, what should we do first to grow closer as a family?"
1) Story time again! Only this time Tara gets to tell stories about Jake!
2) A relaxing day at the Smalls family pool... or as relaxing as it can get with your nemesis around.
It was the only thing you could think to say upon looking up at your grinning aunt as you were sprawled out on her palm.
