Greatest Shame Cheating Death chapter 16 by copier · original author: spiralwriter

Voices. That was the only muffled, far away sound you heard that kept you from fading into the tempting darkness of unconscious, and possibly, permanent death. You moaned, gritting your teeth to fight back the pain, clinching your eyes shut to keep from waking up. Your entire body felt like it was broken, on fire, and torn apart all at the same time. But slowly, you knew it was healing. It always happened like this. Normal people died from broken spines. If your spine cracked and shattered, the bones and muscle would simply realign themselves all sinew and order was in place again.

The voices again.

They called out to you, beckoning you back to the world of the large. You didn't want to go back. You just wanted to forever stay in this state of continual sleep and still body, relaxed and away from the troubles of life. Maybe if you ignored them long enough, they would fade away as well.

Unfortunately, no. The voices only grew louder, and their lingering became full on blasting within your eardrums and all around you. You were jolted free from the peaceful escape of the blackness, only to open your eyes to a terrible new world.

Before you appeared to be a mountain, towering, piercing the sky, filled with craggy outlines you could dissapear into. But no, your senses and percievance knew this wasn't a mountain. It was a pebble. A pebble you could toss into your pocket and forget about, as big as Mount Everest. And beyond that, impossibly huge things and beings that, honestly, terrified the living freaking shit out of you.
