“I don’t…” Emma stammered, “I mean… how am I supposed to… should I call somebody?!”

You weren’t exactly certain on answers yourself. As far as you’re aware, this is the only instance of someone shrinking in all of history. Would a hospital even know what to do? There were people you could ask Emma to call, but how much help they’d be was up for debate. Besides, you weren’t eager to be seen like this by any more people than strictly necessary.

“Unless you know of any mad scientists, I think we’re on our own on this one.”

Emma thought for a moment, as if trying to recall if she actually knew any mad scientists. None came to mind.

“So… you’re stuck like this?” She asked.

“I’m sure it’ll pass. It has to, right? It’s probably some weird virus and once it’s out of my system I’ll go back to my normal size.” The giant head looked down on you sympathetically. She wasn’t convinced. “Emma, I’m sorry to ask, but, is there any chance I could stay at your place until this blows over? I hate to be a burden, but I don’t think it’s safe for me to be home alone like this…”

“Oh, Alex…” Emma’s voice was apologetic in tone. Not a good sign. “I would, but I’ve got work today…”

You started pleading with the giant head. “Really? You can’t call in sick? Or tell them there’s an emergency?”

You felt like this scenario was exactly the sort of thing sick days were invented for, but Emma flashed those pitying eyes at you for the second time.

“I would, but… I’m kind of in a ‘final warning’ situation with my boss. I don’t think she’d believe me if I said my neighbour was shrunk down and needs taking care of.”

Your shoulders dropped. You both went silent. It was looking like the hospital was your only option after all. By tomorrow, you’ll be front page news and you’ll be remembered as the tiny guy forever…

“I have an idea!” Emma suddenly chirped. You listened to her with renewed hope.
