Izzy came back downstairs forty minutes later with her eyes still pink around the edges and a blanket around her shoulders, a war widow in a movie.
She'd clearly rubbed them. Max, sitting in his ramekin on the kitchen island, recognized the technique. She'd done it in eighth grade to get out of a math test, and in tenth to get out of a speeding ticket, and both times it had worked.
"Hi," she said in a small voice.
"Mija." Victoria was at the stove, stirring a pot of rice with one hand and holding her phone with the other, fresh red nails clicking on the screen. "Are you feeling better?"
"Kind of." Izzy climbed onto the stool across from Max and pulled the blanket tighter. She didn't look at him. "I just keep thinking about it. Like, what if I'd stepped harder?"
"You didn't, baby. He's fine. Look at him."
Izzy looked at him. Max looked back. She had a talent for holding her face perfectly still while something behind it laughed itself sick.
"He does look fine," she agreed. Then, after exactly the right pause: "He looked fine earlier, too."
Victoria's spoon slowed. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing. It's dumb."
"Isabella."
"It's just..." Izzy picked at a thread on the blanket. "When I lifted my foot up? Before you came in? He wasn't, like, crying or anything. He didn't even try to crawl away." She shrugged one shoulder. "He seemed really comfortable. That's all."
Max's whole body went hot. "I was winded."
"Totally," Izzy said, nodding. "That's what I figured. Winded."
Victoria set the spoon down on the rest. She turned around slowly, wiping her hands on a dish towel, and looked at Max in his ramekin. Her eyes went from his face to the way he had his knees pulled up tight against his chest, arms locked around them, and stayed there a beat too long.
He hadn't uncrossed his legs since the living room. He'd been hoping nobody would notice.
"Mijo," Victoria said carefully. "When Mama picked you up off the carpet, you were lying on your tummy."
"I fell on my stomach."
"Mm-hm." She tilted her head. "And you kept your hips all scrunched down on Mama's hand. The whole time. Even when Mama tried to turn you over to check your ribs."
"Because they hurt."
"Your hips?"
"My ribs."
Victoria didn't say anything for a moment. Behind her, the rice lid rattled. Across the island, Izzy took a long, slow sip of her Monster and studied the ceiling with the deep innocence of a girl who had never once in her life tried to frame anybody.
"I'm gonna go lie back down," Izzy announced, sliding off the stool. "I'm still, like, emotionally drained." At the doorway she stopped and turned, as if a thought had only just occurred to her. "Oh. Mom? The new briefs came, right? The six I ordered? Rush shipping, they came while you were out. They're on your bed. I didn't open them. I just thought you'd want to know where they were."
She padded off. Max heard every step up the stairs.
Victoria stood in the kitchen with the dish towel in her hands and looked at him for a long time.
"Mom," Max said. "Mom, she's doing this on purpose."
"Doing what, sweetie?"
"This. All of it. She's—she planted everything on my laptop, and she's the one who—"
"Mijo." Victoria came around the island and leaned down until her face filled his whole sky, berry lips and big brown eyes gone wet and tender. "Your sister cried for forty minutes because she thought she hurt you. You heard her."
"She wasn't crying! She was laughing—"
"Sweetie." A fingertip settled on the top of his head and stroked once, down to the nape of his neck. "Mama's not mad. Mama's never going to be mad about this. But you don't have to blame Izzy because you're embarrassed." She smiled, and it was the most patient smile he'd ever seen on her. "Mama saw, mijo. When she picked you up. Mama saw."
Max opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
There was no version of the truth that helped. Izzy pinned me under her sock and taunted me until I got hard was not, in any universe, an alibi.
Victoria straightened up, turned off the burner, and tossed the dish towel over her shoulder.
"Okay," she said brightly. "Dinner can wait. Mama's going to go open her package."
*
The briefs were black this time.
Six pairs of them, in a gray mailer with the same pink logo, laid out on the duvet in a neat fan. Cotton, full coverage, high-waisted, with the same tag. BREATHABLE. ULTRA-STRETCH. EXTRA ROOM IN BACK. Izzy had sized up. Max could tell, because when Victoria held the first pair up to the lamp, the seat sagged open like an empty hammock.
"Oh, these are roomy," Victoria said, delighted. "Your sister's so thoughtful."
She changed in the bathroom with the door half-open. Max sat on the vanity and looked at the wall very hard, which did nothing to stop him hearing her shimmy the shorts down over her hips, or the snap of the new waistband settling against skin.
Then she came out and did a turn in the mirror, and he looked anyway.
Black cotton on Victoria's ass did something lavender hadn't. It made it look bigger. Each cheek was a huge, round, dark-wrapped hill that jutted out from her lower back and wobbled every time she shifted her weight. The fabric stretched taut across the widest part and then pouched loose underneath, where Izzy's extra size gave out. Two half-moons of brown skin peeked from the leg holes at the bottom. When she bent forward to check her hair in the mirror, the cotton rode up into her crack and pulled into a deep shadowed seam, and both cheeks spread apart behind it.
He knew exactly how much room was in there. He'd spent two hours finding out yesterday.
"Now," Victoria said, turning to face him with her hands on her hips. "Mama's not going to make you. Okay? Mama wants you to know that. If you really don't want to, you just say so."
Max blinked. "Really?"
"Of course, sweetie." She smiled. "But Mama's going to ask you one question first, and you have to be honest. Okay?"
"Okay."
"When you were in Mama's panties yesterday..." Her voice dropped, gentle, almost shy. "And Mama was lying down. And you stopped wiggling. Were you asleep?"
He'd been awake. He'd been awake for every second of it, breathing her in, listening to her hum.
He thought about lying. He thought about how good he was at it, which was not at all. He thought about Izzy's voice from the other end of the couch, you sigh, and about his own traitor dick on the carpet three hours ago, and how none of it was ever going to make sense to anybody, least of all him.
"No," he said quietly.
Victoria's whole face lit up.
"Oh, mijo."
*
She put him in at four-fifteen.
It was the same as yesterday, and it wasn't. Yesterday she'd lowered him in with the care of a bomb technician. Today she just hooked her thumb in the back of the waistband, peeled it out from her skin, and slid him in feet first with one easy, practiced motion, the same way she'd pocket her car keys. The waistband snapped shut above his head. Black cotton closed over him. The world went dark and hot and very, very close.
Her ass was right there. Not near him. On him. The great curve of her right cheek pushed against his chest and stomach and thighs, and the left one leaned in against his shoulder and the side of his face, and between them, under his feet, was the deep hot groove of her crack, damp already from the day. The cotton held him flat against her from behind. He could feel the grain of her skin. He could feel the faint scratch where she hadn't shaved in a day or two, right at the top of the seam.
And he could smell her. Cocoa butter and fabric softener first, then deeper, stronger, the funky, musky, salty scent of skin that had been pressed together in a pair of booty shorts all afternoon at the nail salon. It soaked into him. It settled in the back of his throat and stayed.
"Comfy?" Victoria asked. Her voice came down through her spine.
He wiggled once.
"Good boy."
She went downstairs and finished the rice. She made chicken tinga and stood over the stove for twenty minutes, shifting her weight from one foot to the other, and every shift rolled one huge cheek up and the other down, grinding him gently back and forth in the dark, a pestle in a mortar. When she leaned over to check the oven, both cheeks spread and he slid down an inch into her crack, and when she straightened up they clamped shut on him again. He learned the rhythm fast. He hated how fast he learned it.
She ate dinner sitting on a kitchen stool.
That was different, too. Yesterday she'd at least noticed the sits. She'd leaned forward now and then so he could grab a breath, and patted her hip when he wiggled, even while she told him no. Tonight she just sat. Two hundred and fifty pounds came down on the cushion of the stool, and her ass spread out over him and around him, a dropped sack of flour, and the cotton tightened, and the air went out of him in a squeak she didn't seem to hear over Izzy telling a story.
Because Izzy was at dinner. Of course she was. Fully recovered, no blanket, chatting about some drama in her group chat, laughing at her own jokes.
"Where's Max?" she asked, around a mouthful of tortilla. Very casual.
"Oh, he's around," Victoria said, and reached back without looking and gave her own hip a little pat.
Izzy said nothing at all. Max heard the clink of her fork on her plate. Then he heard her laugh, very softly, into her napkin.
*
By ten o'clock, he'd stopped counting hours.
They'd watched two episodes of the dating show on the sectional. Victoria had sat on him for both of them with a glass of wine, her weight settling into the cushion and settling into him, until his whole world was dark cotton and heat and the sound of her heartbeat thumping down her spine. Somewhere in the second episode she'd let one go without even noticing, a tiny one, barely there.
tff
It puffed into the cotton and had nowhere to go but into him. He coughed. She didn't stop watching.
At ten-fifteen, she yawned, stretched, and stood up. He felt every inch of it, the long peel of her ass lifting off the couch cushion and the cool air rushing in through the leg holes, and then she was climbing the stairs, and his body was rocking back and forth with every step.
In the bedroom, she washed her face. She brushed her teeth. She did the face mask. She put on lotion, every inch of her legs, and the smell of cocoa butter got so thick inside the briefs he could taste it.
Then she pulled back the covers.
"Okay, mijo," Victoria said softly. "Time for bed."
He wiggled three times.
It was the first time he'd done it all day. Three hard wiggles. The signal. Out. I need out.
There was a pause.
"Aw." She reached back and stroked the curve of her own ass, right over him, and her palm slid across the cotton over his back. "Sweetie. Mama knows. It's late, and you're tired."
He wiggled three more times.
"But you know what Mama was thinking?" Victoria climbed onto the bed. The mattress sank under one knee and then the other. "You've been in there since four. You're so settled. And the jewelry tray is so cold, mijo, and it's so far away, all by itself on the nightstand. What if you roll off in the night? What if Mama doesn't hear you?"
"I won't roll off," he squeaked into the cotton. Nobody heard him.
"So Mama's going to keep you right here," she went on. "Nice and close. Mama'll sleep on her side. Okay? She won't roll on you. She promises."
She lay down. She did it carefully. She eased onto her left side, facing the window, with her knees drawn up and her ass pushed back toward the middle of the bed. The duvet came down over all of it, a second layer of heat on top of the first. Her cheeks settled. With her lying on her side, they didn't press flat on him the way they did when she sat. They sagged, heavy and loose, one on top of the other, and he lay in the crease between them, held in place by the elastic and the cotton and the sheer weight of her hanging over him.
It was hot. It was so hot. He could barely breathe for the heat.
"Night-night, mijo," Victoria mumbled. She was already half asleep. "Mama loves you."
Her breathing changed within five minutes. It got deep and even and slightly whistling through her nose, and every breath rolled down her back and into her ass, a long, lazy swell and settle, over and over, rocking him in the dark.
Max lay awake in his stepmother's underwear and stared at nothing.
He thought about Ventus. He thought about the bins in his room, still labeled, still packed, sitting by the door where Victoria hadn't touched them. He thought about Izzy's voice on the couch. People want you here, Max. He thought about how, right now, at least two people in this house wanted him so badly they'd made a list.
He thought about how his dick, pressed against the curve of her ass in the dark, still hadn't gotten the memo that this was a bad situation.
He thought about not thinking about that.
Somewhere around midnight, the house made a sound.
It was faint, so faint he almost missed it under Victoria's breathing. A door, down the hall. Izzy's. The careful creak of the third stair, which everybody in the family knew to step over and which Izzy, apparently, had forgotten. A pause. Then, softer still, the front door unlocking from inside.
Victoria didn't stir.
Outside, an engine idled at the curb. Max could feel it more than hear it, a low bass rumble coming up through the walls and the mattress and into Victoria's sleeping body. A car door opened. Izzy's laugh drifted up from the driveway, high and bright and nothing like the voice she used at the dinner table, the laugh of a girl who was about to get away with something. A boy's voice answered, too low to make out words. Then the door shut, and the engine growled, and headlights swept across the bedroom ceiling once, white and fast, through the gap in the curtains.
Then they were gone.
Max lay very still in the dark, in the heat, in the crack of his stepmother's ass, and listened to the car fade off down the street until there was nothing left but Victoria, breathing.
Miguel, he thought.
Then, after a while:
She's not coming back till morning. And nobody's ever going to know but me.
It should have felt like leverage. It didn't. It felt like being the only one in the house who was awake and the only one who couldn't go anywhere.
Victoria sighed in her sleep and shifted. Her ass rolled back an inch and settled, heavier, over him. In her sleep, she reached behind herself and laid her palm flat across the seat of her panties, fingers spread, the way she'd put a hand on a sleeping pet.
She didn't move it again all night.
