“Ugh. Fine,” Izzy groaned, locking her phone and tossing it onto the bed. “But only ’cause I want the first post to be, like, curated.”

Max sagged in her fingers with relief. It didn’t last.

“Izzy?” Victoria’s voice rolled up from the kitchen, cheerful and carrying, the public version of her that she took to Costco. “Is he up yet? I’m running to Costco for his move-in stuff, and I need to know which duffel he wants before they sell out. I’m coming up!”

Then came the one sound neither of them wanted to hear: sandals on the bottom step.

Izzy’s eyes went wide. “Shit.”

“Tell her I’m asleep!” Max hissed.

“She’ll just come in and wake you. That’s, like, her whole thing.” Izzy hoisted him up to her nose. “Okay. You’re going in. And if you scream, I swear to God, I will park this ass on your pillow and you will learn a very important lesson about volume.”

“Wait—just put me in a drawer—”

“Dude. The drawer’s the first place she looks when she thinks I’m hiding vapes.”

She didn’t wait for a better idea. She yanked the collar of her band shirt down, and the world became skin.

The valley between her tits opened on a wave of trapped heat: two-day-old lotion, fresh sweat, and the faint, sour-yeasty funk of a girl who’d slept braless in a polyester shirt in the middle of July. A mole the size of his fist sat to his left like a boulder. Izzy pushed him in the way she pushed a phone into her back pocket, thumb flat against his bare back, and the soft, damp walls closed around him with a wet little shluck.

“Mmmph!”

She flicked the outside of her boob with one black nail. “Shut up. You’re fine. You’re literally touching boobs. Worse things have happened to virgins.”

The sandals were halfway up now. “Izzy? Did he eat? I don’t want him sleeping till noon and then inhaling cereal, you know how his stomach gets—”

“Mom. He’s fine. I’ll come out!”

If Victoria made it into the room, she’d see the empty bed. Izzy stood up to head her off at the door.

Inside her shirt, gravity changed. The cozy valley became a swinging hot canyon. Every step rolled her body around him like a waterbed in an earthquake, and before she’d even made it halfway across the room, Max was slipping, sliding right down to the sweaty underside of one breast with nothing to hold onto. Izzy’s hand shot up under her hem to mash him back into place.

It wasn’t going to hold. She knew it the same second he did. Loose shirt, no bra, Victoria ten feet away and climbing.

“Shit,” she muttered, half laughing and half cursing. Then she changed the plan the way she changed every plan: mid-motion, no discussion.

Two fingers fished him back out from between her tits with a sticky drag, then fed him lower. Down past the underside of her tits. Over the soft, pale hill of her stomach, past a navel like a salad bowl. And right into the stretched-out waistband of her thong.

“Better,” she whispered. “Hands-free. Don’t you dare—”

The elastic snapped over his waist like a gate slamming shut. She worked him back with two fingers, careless and practiced, the same way she’d hidden snacks and vapes and a second phone from her mom for years, until he slid down into the hot, sweaty groove she’d been sleeping on all night.

Then her ass closed around him.

It was like being swallowed by a pair of steaming beanbags. The thong’s damp front was plastered to his face, and the heavy split of her cheeks clamped down on everything behind him. The heat was unreal. So was the smell, thick enough to coat his tongue: unwashed crack, deodorant giving up, and the sour, metallic tang of skin that had been trapped in cheap fabric since yesterday afternoon. The thong strap lay across his back like a leash.

Izzy clenched once, settling all 180 pounds of herself into the fit of her underwear, and the world clamped shut. His arms were pinned. His face was buried in cotton that had been between her legs all night. And, to his eternal shame, his traitor body was still interested.

She felt that, too. Of course she did.

“Gross,” Izzy whispered. Her voice shook a little. It might have been a laugh. It might not.

Victoria’s sandals hit the top step.

Izzy strolled to the doorway with her stepbrother hanging in the sweaty dark between her cheeks, every step a rolling squeeze, and leaned against the frame in her default slouch, one knee cocked. From the outside, she must’ve looked like any other girl who’d just rolled out of bed with nothing to hide but a vape and a bad attitude.

Max couldn’t see Victoria, but he could smell her: berry lipstick, expensive lotion, fresh coffee. Her voice came from somewhere above Izzy’s shoulder. She was close enough to touch her daughter, which meant she was close enough that if Izzy’s shirt rode up the way it liked to, this morning was about to become a very different story.

“He’s alive,” Izzy told the hallway, blocking the doorway with her hip. “He’s in the bathroom. Like, camped in there. Don’t go in, trust me. I offered him breakfast, he said later. Go to Costco.”

“Tell him I’m getting the good tortillas for the goodbye dinner. And the dorm duffels are on sale. If he wants the blue one instead of the black one, he has to text me today, before everybody else’s kids buy out the big ones.”

“Wow. I will tell him all about the tortillas and the importance of duffel colors.”

“Don’t be like that, mija. This is his last month at home. I want it to feel like—”

“Mom. Costco. The rotisserie chicken line. Go.”

A long pause. Max could practically hear Victoria deciding to let it go the way she always did, which was never all the way.

“Text me if he wants anything from the snack aisle.”

“Ugh. Fine.”

Sandals down the stairs. Keys. The front door. The expensive-sounding thunk of Victoria’s car door, then the garage, then the street, then nothing.

Izzy didn’t take him out.

Instead, she stood in the doorway and breathed the way she always did when a joke had gone further than she’d planned. Then her body did what it always did when she was thinking too hard and trying not to.

PPPPFFFFRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPTTTTHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

It wasn’t a weapon. It was just Izzy in the morning: long, warm, wet around the edges, and loud enough to rattle the doorframe. The thong ballooned out around him and slapped right back against his face as the blast poured down the channel and filled every inch of the thong with a sour, spicy fog that tasted like last night’s gas-station taquitos. His eyes burned. His throat slammed shut. The heat hit his back like a hair dryer.

Izzy let out a little grunt of private satisfaction, the same one she made every time she ruined a room.

“Eh,” she said to nobody. “Not my best.”

Then, after a second that went on a little too long, she spoke to the lump in her underwear.

“Hope you’re a fart guy now, lil bro. ’Cause you’re gonna be.”

She walked back into his room instead of out of it. Every step kneaded him. She stopped in front of his corkboard, where his Ventus acceptance letter was still pinned dead center under a Smash Bros. print, and went quiet. He couldn’t see her face. He could only feel her stomach tighten and the whole world around him shrink a little.

“I was gonna put it in your drink at the goodbye dinner,” she said quietly, like the letter was the one she was talking to. “That was the original joke. Make you tiny for pics, then you’d wake up normal on the bus. I moved it up because you were being so fucking smug about packing.”

Max tried to say her name and got a mouthful of thong.

“Miguel swears the guy does this all summer,” she went on. Izzy never knew when to shut up, and the dark always made her honest in a cheap kind of way. “Party bottles. Parking-lot stuff. I paid Miguel cash, and he goes, ‘Starter pack, babe.’ Like you were a game or something.”

She hooked a finger in her waistband and peeled it back, letting the daylight in. Max blinked up past the pale slope of her stomach and the undersides of her tits at her face: smeared eyeliner, crooked fringe, and a mouth that had finally run out of jokes.

“You’re not telling Mom,” she said. “Not today. I need, like, one day. I’m gonna find Miguel and make him find out which bottle his cousin’s guy gave him. You just sit tight and don’t do the martyr voice, and I’ll fix it.”

“You can’t,” Max croaked.

“Watch me.”

She didn’t wait for him to watch. She pushed him back into the groove with two fingers, snapped the elastic shut, and clenched on purpose this time. It was a slow, heavy squeeze that mashed him flat in the wet heat and held. One more little leak followed, not a performance this time, just plumbing.

pfffrrrtt

Then she grabbed her phone off his bed and padded out the door in her socks, carrying what was left of his summer in the crack of a dirty thong.

She’d made it halfway down the stairs when the phone buzzed in her hand.

Izzy stopped. Through the thin cotton, Max felt her whole body go rigid.

“…Huh,” she said softly. “Speak of the devil.”
