Childhood friends with the teen genius

Yawning, you fumbled with the lock on the door to Hotaru's lab. Even after all the days you'd gotten up earlier than you'd liked, your body still wasn't used to it.

Sometimes you wished Hotaru wouldn't call you over so early in the morning.

...

Eh, in the end it wasn't that big a deal. The genius inventor made your life interesting, if nothing else. And you'd be lying if you said that you didn't enjoy being around her- quite the opposite. Maybe some people in your school would think it was weird for a boy and a girl to be best friends, but you'd been friends with Hotaru since the two of you were little, and you knew her better than anybody else (and vice-versa.) The two of you had got up to some pretty exciting stuff over the years, between renovating the building that was now Hotaru's private lab, helping her test various inventions (some mundane, some... more on the sci-fi side of things.)

But your thoughts were getting off topic. You didn't know why Hotaru had called you over here so early, but from the few texts she'd sent you, your friend seemed really excited about something.

Knowing her, she'd likely wrapped up the construction of her secret project- you weren't sure what it was (despite being her best friend she'd even kept the specifics of it a secret from you,) but knowing her it was probably another invention. Just what kind of invention, though, wasn't something you could even begin to guess at.

With that line of thinking concluded, you returned to the real world.

Hotaru's lab- it wasn't a particularly fancy place, having been refurbished from what had at one point been an abandoned building in the middle of the woods. But the inside was well lit, sound-proofed, and meticulously cleaned to ensure that it was the best possible 'secret base' for the inventor.

The soundproofing helped a lot, given that many of Hotaru's inventions tended to produce a lot of noise. And that wasn't even getting into the occasional invention that backfired or malfunctioned, sometimes quite explosively.

Finally, you got the lock, which had been sticking, open. Strange. It didn't seem like Hotaru was here yet. It wasn't like her to get here after you, especially not now that she was planning on showing off her 'secret project' to you.

Creeping inside, you turned on the lights. The space inside the small building wasn't super huge, with most of it being crowded by Hotaru's past inventions, but there was a separate room off to the side that Hotaru used for testing (so that her successful inventions weren't at risk of being caught in the aftermath of any malfunctioning experiments/ projects.)

Opening the door to the experiment room, you walked inside.

Still no sign of Hotaru. Guess she really wasn't here yet.

There was, however, a large object covered by a sheet standing on the table in front of you. This must be Hotaru's 'project.'

Hmm... What to do now?

1) See what it is, obviously!
2) Wait for Hotaru to show up. You don't want to rain on her parade by spoiling her big reveal to you.
