"Yeah, apparently he got a better offer in another city. Just glad he's gone" Kia smiled while she prepared the barbecue with your help, both of you catching up and her telling you the latest news at the restaurant you used to work part time at.
Your best friend and party host Rachel was too busy saying hi to all the guests and making the obligatory small talk, and while Kelly and Alisa were in charge of providing drinks and snacks you two were tasked with the barbecue. Your aspiring chef friend naturally took care of the grill while you were for now working as an assistant, but you were also going to make some salad and sauces as extra options for the guests.
"Hey Jess, please keep an eye at this for 5 minutes while I go to the bathroom" Kia told you and you nodded, knowing there wasn't much to worry about. You were barely starting after all, no risk of overcooking the food or anything like that while she's gone. Whenever you talked with Kia the topic of your previous job always popped up, and you internally felt a bit jealous of the fact that she already had a clearly defined ambition despite being younger than you. But today wasn't the day to worry about that anyway, today it was the day to make sure Rachel had an unforgettable 21st birthday party.
You busied yourself cutting some vegetables as an alternative option while keeping an eye on the grill until a strange smell reached your nose. You checked the grill closely wondering what was that about and you didn't notice anything, but you were starting to feel lightheaded and dizzy, as if instead of cutting veggies you were overexerting yourself physically and were now at breaking point. You didn't have time to call for help or to even take a deep breathe, all you could do was stumble before passing out and experiencing the strangest feeling.
