"Of course Sir!" Penny says in her joyful tone but you feel a twinge of something else on it, something like disappointment or condescension at either not being able to flirt with you a bit more or squeeze some more money out of you.
She tells you to wait and goes to attend the customer that called her earlier while you look around at what the popular Merry Minotaur has to offer and end up being fairly unimpressed. Not only because you were used to a better standard before the Rosewood dynasty took everything from you, but also because you aren't really in the mood to drink and forget like the groups of people you had in front of you. One of them was playing a loud game of cards that seemed like it would end with a fight sooner rather than later, and the other group was chatting with a bit too much excitement about some vulgar gossip involving a poor farmer and his cheating wife.
As for the customers drinking alone and in smaller groups, they didn't look willing to have any kind of interaction with you judging by the way they returned your gaze. Yet among the seemingly unfriendly faces there were two customers that called your attention in some way.
The first was an old man, probably in his late forties, and like you he had a stand out attire, not an armor but an elegant robe that looked out of place in a site like this. What intrigued you weren't his clothes, but the way he kept looking all around as if expecting for someone to show up, and how his gaze moved so quickly you couldn't read what he was waiting so eagerly for, and if he was doing it with excitement, fear or anger.
The second was a hooded tall and slim figure, too focused on their drink to bother looking at your direction. The outline of their arms in the table told you it was a woman but the fact that they weren't approached by any of the other customers piqued your interest. Could they be another traveler like you? Maybe a local with a bad reputation or some dark secret?
"Please follow me, dear" Penny calls you out with a wink and you give the halfling a weak smile before complying and going to your room. It was nothing fancy, but it would allow you to organize your thoughts and plan your next course of action as a failed knight.
"If you need anything else feel free to see me downstairs, I'm sure even a nobleman like you can find something he likes on the Merry Minotaur" Penny tells you with a wink before closing the door leaving you in a mild state of confusion. What did she mean with that exactly? After laying down your equipment you sit in the bed and get lost in your thoughts staring at the ceiling, not feeling motivated enough to think about the future but also feeling a bit uneasy which keeps you awake. Maybe you should heed Penny's advice and check again for anything interesting in the tavern? It didn't look promising but the life you knew no longer exists, so you have to start somewhere.
What happens next?
