Extremely happy about her successful experiment, Lucy unlocked the cage and reached in for Jill. She pulled the girl out and brought her up to her face.
Maybe I can convince the teacher to let me keep you! she said.
But Jills new excitement at the weirdness of the switch on her back had made her reckless. Ive had enough of this sick, mental bitch, she thought. Lucy was so caught up in her own genius that she wasnt holding Jill very tightly. Jill noticed this, and pressed the switch yet again. Instantly she rocketed toward the ceiling.
Jill expected to slam into the ceiling. But just before she reached it she slowed down in midair and her feet landed softly on it. The world had flipped for her, and now Lucy stood on what should have been the ceiling, where tables and equipment clung beside her, including the cage where the boy and girl were kept.
Then Jill had an idea.
Get back down here now! Lucy screamed.
Adrenaline pumping through her veins, Jill ran across the ceiling until she was just below, (or above, she remembered, shaking her head at the weirdness of it all), the cage with its two wheels and two prisoners. Then she pressed the switch again and plummeted straight for the cage. She screamed in fear and crazed delight. Just before splattering on the glass floor of the cage she slowed down. When she opened her squinted eyes she was standing on the floor, staring at the boy and girl, who were staring back at her with mouths hanging open.
Stop it! Lucy shrieked.
Knowing her time was limited, Jill whisked the boy into her arms and pressed the switch again. The two of them flew back to the ceiling. But as Jill turned around and gravity reversed itself for her, the boy slipped out of her hands. She caught his wrist just as her feet touched the ceiling. This was the strangest experience of all, standing on the ceiling and having the boy pulled upward to the floor.
Hang on! she shouted, and ran across the ceiling, pulling him with her.
She ran to the dirty basement window, pressed the switch again and dropped onto the windowsill. Lucy came charging toward them, with the other girl now held securely in her fist.
Dont move! Lucy shouted.
Jill reached up, unlatched the small window and threw her weight against it. It popped open. She grabbed the boys hand and ran up it like a ramp.
At that moment Lucys hand snatched the boy away from her. She stood with her body pushing through the window, glasses fallen from her face, glaring at Jill like she wanted to strangle her. Get back in here now! You are mine! All of you!
We dont belong to anybody, bitch! the boy shouted, and hurled a massive wad of spit right into her eye. Lucy shrieked in disgust and let go of both the boy and the girl. They fell onto the windowsill while she staggered backward, rubbing the spit out of her eye. They ran back up the open window to where Jill stood on its edge.
She held her arms out to her sides. Grab onto me, she said.
The girl grabbed her right upper arm, while the twelve-year-old boy instantly splayed his fingers across her left breast. He leered up at her.
Not there you pervert! she slapped his hand away.
Sorry, he said sheepishly.
He grabbed her other arm.
Lucy was staggering back to them, reaching out her hand.
Press the button on my back, Jill commanded.
Two hands, one on top of the other, pressed in on the button, and the three of them shot upward to the sky with Lucys scream of rage echoing far below them.
The wind carried them across the sky. Jill shouted in exhilaration. After ten or fifteen minutes, Jill suddenly felt strange inside, and the world seemed to flip upside down. Suddenly they were hurtling toward the ground. Jill frantically pressed the switch, but nothing happened.
"We're gonna die!" the boy wailed.
