The uniformed woman gestured down at Jill. "She claims to be your daughter, ma'am."
Mrs. Keeper looked down to see her daughter waving up at her. She nodded. "Yes, that's my daughter Jill. It's okay, Major, I'll handle this."
"But, ma'am-"
Mrs. Keeper looked the taller woman in the eye, raising one eyebrow. "I said I'd handle it, Kurtz."
Major Kurtz opened her mouth to say something else, then apparently thought better of it. She turned briskly around and left, closing the cell door behind her
"Now, then," Mrs. Keeper said, looking down at Jill. "What's going on here, Jill?"
Jill took a step forward. "I could ask you the same thing, Mom."
Mrs. Keeper let out an exasperated breath. "You could, Jill, but I'm your mother, and I won't have you sass me like that. Now, how did you girls get in here?" Mrs. Keeper took a small step forward, casting her shadow over Jill.
As Jill looked up at the imposing form of her mother, she wondered if all mothers were like this. Adults thought they were always right and reasonable about everything, but when it came right down to it, did they impose their will just because they were bigger? Jill knew she could never really have a successful argument with her mom, because in the end, all her mother had to to was pick her up and put her in whatever form of 'time out" she could think of. Once she had put her in an empty fish tank. Another time it was a clothes hamper. Just last week, Jill had spent the day in her mom's underwear drawer. Yep, thought Jill, it sucks to be little.
Jill decided to start with the truth. "We found an ID card outside. We were just curious, you know? There's a lot of rumors about this place, Mom. We just wanted to see for ourselves."
Mrs. Keeper nodded, sitting down on the floor so that she'd be closer to eye level with Cindy, who now sat cross-legged on the floor, and the three smaller girls. "So, Cindy. I guess you smuggled Jill and Jackie in?"
Cindy nodded, avoiding Mrs. Keeper's gaze. "Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry, Mrs. Keeper. It's like Jill said, we were just curious, that's all."
"Well," Mrs. Keeper said, shaking her head. "They couldn't have done it without you, Cindy. You're the big person here. You should know you have a responsibility to watch out for little ones like Jill and Jackie."
"Hey!" cried Jackie suddenly, running forward, standing next to Mrs. Keeper's knee, and staring up angrily. "I make my own decisions, Mrs. Keeper! In fact, this was my idea! If Cindy hadn't been there, we'd have found another way in. Jeeze! You'd think somebody with a tiny for a daughter would give us a little more credit for being actual people, instead of just some kind of helpless little pets!"
Mrs. Keeper glared down at Jackie, her lips skinning down to thin lines. "Is that what I should tell your mother, Jackie?"
Jackie crossed her arms, and said, softly, "Go ahead."
"What? I didn't catch that, honey."
Jackie glared back up at Mrs. Keeper, them repeated it, yelling this time. "Go ahead!"
Mrs. Keeper shook her head, sighing. "That smart little mouth's going to get you in big trouble someday, Jackie."
In answer, Jackie stuck out her tongue.
Nurse Granville giggled.
"Be quiet, midget," Mrs. Keeper said, turning toward the little nurse, who stopped laughing.
"Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am," Nurse Granville replied, looking contrite
"Okay. What's your part in all this?"
The small, pretty nurse held a hand to her chest, turning a little pale. "Me? I..uh..."
Jill cut in. "She had nothing to do with it, Mom. We just met her in the hall by the elevator. Don't blame her."
Nurse Granville, looked down at the little girl who was about half her own size, and gave her a grateful smile. Jill smiled back.
"Okay, okay." Jill's mother closed her eyes, rubbing her fingers lightly over her face. "So, what, exactly did you girls see here?"
Jill had been waiting for this question. "Mom, all we got to see was that weird elevator and some hallways. We didn't see any doorways anywhere. We were standing by the elevators when we saw her," Jill pointed at Nurse Granville. "Uh..."
"Nurse Granville. Call me Louise, Jill."
Jill nodded. "Sorry. We saw Louise, shared the elevator with her, and, well, that's it."
"Uh huh. You also saw what was in the room outside." Mrs. Keeper gestured behind her.
"Yeah," Jackie answered. "We all saw it, Mrs. Keeper. All those cages and lab equipment, and the little people you're doing experiments on. We saw it all, so I guess you can't ever let us go now, right?"
"Jackie!" Cindy reached down and put a restraining finger on Jackie, who was tensing forward, as though she meant to lunge at Jill's mom. "Don't say such a thing! That's Jill's mom! She would never do something like that! Would you, ma'am?"
Mrs. Keeper hesitated only a second. "No... Of course not, Cindy." She turned a warm smile down at Jackie. "No more X-Files for you, Jackie. This isn't a government conspiracy. It's a research installation. I can't go into details about what we do around here, but, I assure you, there's nothing sinister going on."
"Yeah, right." said Jackie, brushing off Cindy's finger.
"Ma'am," Nurse Granville was raising her hand. "I was on my way out. Back up to the school. If you want, I can show them out."
Mrs. Keeper appeared to consider the nurse's offer. Then she nodded. "Okay, little nurse, you do that. Cindy, you can put Jill and Jackie in your pack. One thing, though." Mrs. Keeper held up a finger, looking at all three girls. "You must never speak of what you've seen here today. It's a matter of national security."
Jackie blew a disgusted breath. Jill just stared up at her mom, a speculative look on her face.
"Yeah, that's cool," said Cindy, nodding, and looking down at her small friends. "Right, guys?"
After a moment, Jill said, "Sure, Mom."
Cindy nudged Jackie in the side. The little dark-haired girl rolled her eyes. "Sure. Whatever."
Mrs. Keeper nodded as she rose to her feet. "Good. See you tonight, Jill. Jackie, Cindy, you'll both have to come over for dinner sometime."
"Sure, Mrs. Keeper," said Cindy, smiling. "Thanks."
Jackie just looked up at Mrs. Keeper, her expression unreadable.
"Come on, guys," Cindy said, reaching for Jill, who raised her arms up into the embrace of Cindy's hand. Cindy picked up Jill and nestled her gently into the pack. When she turned to reach for Jackie, Cindy saw that she was already crawling in on her own.
"You're way too anxious to touch my goodies all the time, gargantua," said Jackie as she squirmed in next to Jill.
Louise laughed, glancing up at Cindy. "I like her."
Cindy grinned down at the little nurse. "Me, too."
Jackie looked out of the pack, sticking out her tongue.
Cindy laughed. "Do you want a ride in here, too, Louise? Plenty of room."
"That's okay," replied Nurse Granville, as she followed Mrs. Keeper out the door. "My legs are little, but I can keep up with big people okay."
Cindy nodded, zipping the pack most of the way closed. Then she stood and followed Nurse Granville out the door.
They passed back into the outer room, where Major Kurtz watched them with disapproval from her desk. Before they left the room, Jackie stuck her little hand out of the pack, and yelled, "Bye-bye, Kurtzie!"
Nurse Granville, leading Cindy out the door, had to stifle a giggle when she saw the scowl on the major's face.
The ride up in the elevator was uneventful, with none of the girls saying much. When they reached the upper level, the guards, who had apparently been alerted of their arrival by Jill's Mom, let Cindy and Nurse Granville pass without a search. The guards did, however, confiscate the ID card, at Mrs. Keeper's order.
Once they were outside and away from the guards, Nurse Granville stopped and beckoned for Cindy to kneel down. When she did so, the little nurse placed her hands on Cindy's knee and leaned up to the big girl's face. "Cindy, you better get the little ones out of there soon."
Cindy nodded. "Oh, I will, Louise. But Jill and Jackie are okay.'
Nurse Granville shook her head, smiling. "No, Cindy. I mean those two really little ones hiding in your ponytail."
Cindy blinked. "You...you knew? All that time?"
The small woman nodded. "Sure. I bet they're pretty uncomfortable by now. I saw they're wearing the togas. That means they're from inside."
"Louise, I...you're not going to tell?"
The nurse shook her head, and reached up and placed a kiss on Cindy's cheek. "You're sweet kids. I won't tell. You better get going now."
Cindy just stared down at the pretty little women for a moment. Then she reached down and scooped her up into her arms, hugging her gently into her chest. Cindy enjoyed the feel of her warm, soft little body; she was like a cute little teddy bear. "Thanks so much, Louise! That's so nice of you!"
Louise patted Cindy's shoulder. "You're welcome, Cindy. But you really better put me down now. Mr. Jackson will wonder what's going on."
Cindy set the baby-sized woman down. "Bye, Louise. And thanks again!"
"Bye, Louise!" called Jill and Jackie from inside the pack.
Nurse Granville smiled and waved as she walked away toward the little school. Cindy watched, amused, as Louise had to crouch, then actually get on her knees to get through the door of the little school.
Now Cindy decides to...
Mrs. Keeper looked down to see her daughter waving up at her. She nodded. "Yes, that's my daughter Jill. It's okay, Major, I'll handle this."
