(Disclaimer: This chapter contains a Beatles reference, fitting to the story. It is old but classic, and my giving the girls the wit to know of it is a sign of my affection for them.)
A week later, all three girls were in Cindy's bedroom, lying on Cindy's big bed, all dressed for a sleepover. Jill and Cindy wore similar-looking pajama sets, print cotton shorts with short-sleeve tops, while Jackie wore baggy sweat pants and a ragged sweatshirt. Jill thought that Jackie tried to make herself look unattractive, trying to avoid what the little brunette called the 'cuteness factor', but it usually didn't work; the baggy, almost boyish outfits, in fact, seemed, in kind of a reverse spin, to make Jackie look cuter than ever, a fact that Cindy used to mercilessly tease her little friend.
"You said you had news, Jill," said Jackie from her perch on Cindy's lap. The giant blond had placed her there after gushing over Jackie's 'general adorableness" , and had insisted her small friend remain there, reaching down to scoop her back up every time Jackie tried to scoot back down to the bed to join Jill. Jackie jerked a thumb over her shoulder. "I hope it's something that will distract this behemoth from cuddling me all night."
Cindy giggled. "Yeah, Jill. Spill it. Is it something to do with those envelopes?"
Jill nodded, smiling, as she held up three Manila envelopes. "Yep. These are the results form our aptitude tests. With recommendations for our internships at the Complex. The very Complex we are going to infiltrate. Interested?"
Jackie frowned. "How did you get those? We just took the tests yesterday, and they said it'd be a week until we got the results."
Jill opened the clasp on the first envelope, and slid a sheaf of papers out. She raised her eyebrows at Jackie and Cindy. "I've got connections, you know?"
Both girls nodded. They knew.
Jill's mom. The Director.
Jill scanned the first sheet. "This is Jackie's file. I won't bore you with the things we already know, but this has not just the test results you'll get next week, but everything, and I mean everything about you, Jackie."
Jackie snorted. "Yeah, right, like my favorite color-"
"Green," said Jill.
"My school locker combination-"
"25 right, 5 left, 14 right," read Jill.
"My exact length at birth?" Jackie asked, frowning.
"Two-point-one-four inches," said Jill
Cindy whistled. "Whoa, Big Brother's watching."
Jackie narrowed her eyes at the giant girl. "What did you do, read a book?"
Cindy smirked down at Jackie, and stuck out her tongue.
"Anyway," continued Jill. "Trust me. They know it all. Here's the test results: first, General Intelligence Rating, similar to an I.Q. test, rates Jackie as ninety-ninth percentile." She looked at Cindy, then at Jackie, smiling. "That means you're smarter than ninety-nine percent of the tested population, and that's millions of people."
"Smart and cute," said Cindy, giggling.
Jackie ignored her, shrugging nonchalantly. "Who's in the one percent above me? Hawking?"
"Continuing," said Jill. "Applicant has extraordinary aptitude in geometry, algebra, calculus, statistics, physics, biology, chemistry, medicine, cybertechnolgy, nanotechnology, genetics," Jill looked up from the page, smiling a little "It goes on like that for about a half a page. Getting down to the recommendation: Applicant would qualify for any internship in any of the science or technology fields. Recommendation: Full Intern Status, soonest possible. Fast Track- Level One Sciences."
"Which means?" asked Jackie.
"Which means," Jill said, looking at both her friends. "Jackie can basically write her own ticket in the Science and Tech divisions in the Complex. Fast Track means her training will be geared toward taking her, eventually, to a top position there. Level One."
"Cool," said Cindy, reaching down and gently squeezing Jackie in a huge, one-handed huge.
"Step off, Kong," said Jackie, shrugging off Cindy's clutching fingers. "What about the Amazing Colossal Blond here?"
Jill had already opened the folder, and was perusing the sheets. "Cindy's file. Just like Jackie, they've got everything on you, Cindy. But let's get right to your results: General Intelligence Rating-"
"This I've got to hear," smirked Jackie, as she looked back at a slightly embarrassed-looking Cindy.
"Cindy's G.I.R is," Jill continued. "Eighty-ninth percentile."
Jackie's mouth fell open "You're shitting me."
Jill grinned. "Nope." She looked up at her large friend, "Impressive, Cindy."
The big blond blushed. "Thanks."
Jill read on. "Though intelligent and capable in many areas of study, applicant's talents and skill sets suggest training for the intelligence community. Physical and mental capabilities indicate applicant is ideal for training in the martial arts, hand-to-hand combat, weapons technology-"
"Weapons?" said Cindy suddenly. I've never even fired a gun! And fighting? Me?"
Jackie snorted. "Jane Bond. License to cheer."
Jill's expression was kind as she looked up at her big friend. "Don't worry, Cindy. You'll be fine. It doesn't matter that you can't shoot or fight now. They just say you have the latent abilities to learn those skills. I bet you're a good athlete. Soccer, right?"
Cindy nodded. "Yeah, and, uh...I used to do ballet."
"Ballet?" crowed Jackie. "Well, do some ballet, ballerina. Some Swan Lake or something."
Cindy shrugged. "Okay." she snatched Jackie up off her lap and set the startled girl gently down on top of Jill. "Here, hold this for me."
Jill giggled as Jackie rolled off her and onto the bed, settling in next to her. "Funny," Jackie grumbled. "So make with the ballet already."
"Here goes," said Cindy, placing her legs together, raising her arms in a circle over her head, and standing on her tip toes. "My parents are downstairs, so I can't do a bunch of stomping around, but there is one move I can show you."
The large girl stood in her rest position a moment, then, still on tip toe, began to raise her right leg to the side. The long, bare leg rose slowly up to her waist, then kept going; it rose past her side, still moving slowly upward. Jill and Jackie watched, awestruck, as Cindy's leg seemed to move at the hip in an angle that was not strictly anatomically possible. Her lower leg rose past her shoulder, and finally, her foot moved up against the side of her face. Grinning down at her two small friends, she wrapped her elbow around her calf, and hugged her leg to the side of her face. She wiggled her toes near her ear.
"That hurts to look at," whispered Jackie.
Jill nodded. "That doesn't hurt, Cindy?"
The blond shook her head, shaking her foot in the process. "Nope."
"Put that thing down, Elastic-Girl," Jackie said. "Damn, that's freaky."
Cindy dropped her leg down, bounding happily back onto the bed, causing Jill and Jackie to bounce into the air, landing on top of each other again.
"I'll take that," she said, grasping Jackie again, and setting her back on her thigh as she re-seated herself on the bed.
Jackie shook her head resignedly. "What's yours say, Jill?"
The tiny blond waved her hand dismissively. "Nothing much, Jackie. Mine's pretty boring, actually. I can do historical research, maybe medical studies, or something in administration. Pretty dull, really."
"Right," said Jackie, looking up at Cindy. "Get the folder, Kong."
"Way ahead of you, Jackie," replied Cindy, as she reached down and easily plucked the remaining closed folder out of the tiny girl's hands.
"Hey!" protested Jill.
"Let's get a look here," said Jackie, as Cindy dropped the envelope into her waiting hands. She opened it and pulled out the papers. "Okay, General Intelligence Rating: ninety-third percentile. Applicant tested above average in every field of study." Jackie looked up at Cindy. "The word 'every' is underlined, and printed in red ink." Jackie continued to read. "Applicant has superior intelligence, above-average analytical reasoning abilities, outstanding leadership qualities, excellent problem-solving capabilities..." Jackie looked up. "I could go on, but it takes them awhile to run out of complementary adjectives. Oh, here we go...Recommendation: Full Intern Status, soonest. Fast Track. Level 1 Admin."
"So what does that mean?" asked Cindy.
Jackie smiled. "Cindy, I think it means, pretty soon we'll be working for Jill."
Jill smiled. "You say you want a revolution," she sang softly, then the other girls, smiling, joined in , "we-ell, you know-o-o, we all wanna change the world..."
