The six tiny captives watched with dread as the two scientists seated themselves at the table. The woman held a clipboard against her huge breasts.
"All right," said the tall man, tenting his fingers on his chin. "Let's begin, Lisa. What's first?"
The pretty, brown-haired woman consulted her clipboard. "Morphology. Physical structure. We'll need to look at musculature, as well as nervous, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, and excretory systems."
Roger nodded. "Good. Which one of the specimens, do you think?"
"Oh, it doesn't really matter," Lisa replied, shrugging. "This one will do." She reached out and closed her hand around Jason's chest.
"Hey!" the tiny blond boy squealed, kicking his legs and pounding his fists on the giant woman's hand. "Let me go!"
Lisa smirked, as she brought the struggling boy to her face. "These creatures are small and weak, but they are very spirited. They will be interesting to study." Her huge brown eyes gazed at the tiny boy. "Struggle if you must. It will do you no good." Then she set him down, face-up on the smooth, metallic table top. As Jason attempted to roll up onto his feet and run, a strange thing happened.
The hard metal surface beneath him seem to soften and pool around his body, like a flow of molten rock. Then before he knew what happened, the surface solidified again, his body embedded shallowly into the table top. He couldn't move at all.
Lisa removed her finger from the tiny, recessed button in the table edge. "Subject immobilized, Doctor."
"Thank you, Lisa," Roger replied. "I'll dictate my observations to you, but please feel free to note anything I miss."
"Yes, Doctor."
"Okay," said Roger, as he reached for something behind the five other tiny teens who were huddled together at the far side of the table. "Pardon my reach, little ones." The huge doctor grabbed something that looked like a thick, chrome-colored pen, or maybe a laser pointer. It was, Jill saw, as it passed overhead, about half as tall as she was and as thick as her leg.
"I don't like the looks of that thing," whispered Jill to April, who huddled next to her, one arm clamped around Jill's waist.
"Me either," agreed April, shivering.
"We'll start with musculature," said Roger, as he held the tool above the terrified Jason. He then lowered it to Jason's leg, and flipped a switch on it's metal side. There was a tiny humming sound, then a beam of red light shot out, cutting a neat line down Jason's pants, burning a smoking slit in the denim. Jason screamed, but the doctor ignored it, and used two fingers to split Jason's pants open, exposing his pale, white legs.
The small boy strained against the grip of the table top, but couldn't move an inch. His face was turning red with exertion.
Next, the doctor aimed the red beam at Jason's right leg, drawing a crimson swath from thigh to ankle. Jason screamed as the skin of his leg burned away in an instant, leaving behind a skein of ropy, red muscle and fibrous, white tendon.
The boy's scream was loud and long.
But there was no blood. The laser had cauterized the wound, even as it cut, leaving a rim of singed skin on the edges.
In the next several minutes, the doctor made more cuts, exposing a white flash of bone here, a glistening glimpse of intestine there. The surgery was methodical, each cut sampling a different component of the tiny boy's anatomy, as the doctor murmured comments for Lisa to note on her clipboard. And through it all, Jason screamed.
"How can he stay conscious through all that?" asked Jerome, his eyes wide. "How is he even still alive?"
Chris shook his head. "I don't know, man. I think maybe they need him alive to find out how we're put together."
"This is so horrible!" cried Sara, the youngest. She burst into tears, stumbling next to Jill and April. Jill pulled the beautiful young redhead to herself, trying to comfort her.
"I think we're losing him, Doctor," said Lisa, placing a finger against the mutilated boy's throat.
Roger, who had been drawing the laser in a blood-red line around the top of Jason's head, looked up. "Oh? That's too bad." He finished his incision, then placed his thumb and forefinger on the top of poor boy's head. Tugging lightly, he pulled at the skull cap, and it came off with an audible pop. "Oh well. We already got a lot of information. Is it dead?"
Lisa took her finger from Jason's throat, and nodded. "Yes, Doctor. Shall I put him in a cryo-container, and save him for dissection?"
Roger nodded. "Yes, Lisa. Thanks."
The large woman pressed the button on the side of the table, and Jason's corpse lost it's hold with the table. She then scooped up the tiny body in one hand and carried it across the room to a row of metal cabinets, one of which she opened, and pulled out a small, plastic-looking container about the size of a shoe box. She placed Jason inside, then opened a large door that appeared to lead to a walk-in freezer.
Back on the table, the tiny people were huddling close together, most of them too stunned to speak. Sara was softly weeping onto Jill's shoulder.
"Jill," whispered April. "Who the Hell are these pyschos? The government? Those other guys who brought us here looked like Men in Black types."
Jill shook her head, looking up at the man, then glancing at the woman as she made her way back to the table. "No. Not government, April. Not that I'd put something like this past the feds." The pretty blond paused, biting her lip. "April, they're not human."
The little brunette tilted her head quizzically. "What are you talking about?"
Jill nodded at the two scientists, keeping her voice low. "Look at them out of the corners of your eyes, April. You have to catch them in just the right light. Their outward forms are an illusion."
April looked askance at Jill, then, apparently seeing that her friend was serious, she looked at the huge scientists, turning her head to the side and darting her eyes. Then her own eyes went wide.
Jill, sensing that her friend was about to scream, covered April's mouth with her hand. Jill made a shoosing noise. April, green eyes still showing a lot of the whites, nevertheless nodded that she had herself under control. Jill removed her hand.
Jill knew that April had seen what she herself had seen. When you looked at the giants in a certain light, their forms became insubstantial, shimmering like a heat mirage. And beneath the apparently human veneer, something else lay hiding. The form was so odd, so alien, that Jill's human mind had difficulty comprehending it's true appearance; instead, she merely got a vague impression of slimy, slumping bodies, with too many avidly-staring eyes, and boneless, tentacle-like arms writhing in the air.
Then, using a word she had never spoken in her life, April murmured, "You are some ugly mother-fuckers."
"All right," said the tall man, tenting his fingers on his chin. "Let's begin, Lisa. What's first?"
