"Welcome to the school, Jill," said Simone. "I need to go take care of a few things, so can I get a volunteer to come watch Jill at my desk?"
Every hand in the room shot up immediately.
"Oh, I don't need a" Jill began to protest.
"Jill, I know it might be awkward, but until you get adjusted to things here, it'll be better for all of us if there's someone keeping an eye on you."
Jill sighed. "Okay, fine. But let it be a girl, please?"
"Of course," Simone replied cheerfully. "Sarah, come up here and keep an eye on Jill." Jill was a bit unnerved by this choice, given Sarah's slightly-dehumanizing attitude toward her earlier, but at least she didn't seem like a mean person. She's pretty, too, Jill thought as Sarah sat down in the teacher's padded chair.
Simone strode toward the door. "I'll be back in about half an hour. Don't get too rowdy in the mean time." And she left.
Jill looked around the room and saw multiple pairs of eyes on her, though most of the class seemed disinterested. She turned around to face Sarah at the desk, and saw on her face an expression of curious amusement.
"Um, hi again..." said Jill awkwardly.
Sarah smiled. "Hi there, girlie." She reached out and before Jill could object, she had been lifted of the desk and held slightly in front of Sarah's chest.
Jill smiled slightly, more out of embarrassment than anything else. "Okay, um...could you please not pick me up without asking?"
"Oh, sorry," replied Sarah. She didn't put Jill down. Instead, she held Jill in both hands and began stroking her with both thumbs.
"Come on, please put me down?" asked Jill with a hint of force in her voice.
