Linda heard the toy making that sound again. She steps on it once more, curious as to what it is and how it can make that sound. The pressure on Jack's chest increases, making it difficult for him to breathe. He lets out another high-pitched squeak, this time more desperate. Linda leans down, trying to get a better look at the toy beneath her foot. It's pink and small, about the size of a teddy bear. She wiggles it a bit, causing it to squeak again. "That's strange," she mutters to herself. "It doesn't seem to be hurt or anything."
Jack can feel his lungs burning, his vision starting to fade. He tries to summon the strength to move, to get away from his mother's foot. But he's trapped beneath her, helpless. As Linda continues to play with the squeaking toy, Jack's world begins to spin. He tries to focus on her voice, hoping that she'll eventually move her foot and let him breathe.
Finally, Linda seems to lose interest in the toy and lifts her foot off the ground. The pressure on Jack's chest eases, allowing him to gulp in huge breaths of air. He lays there, panting and gasping for air, his body aching from the ordeal. After a few moments, he musters the strength to crawl away, back into the safety of his room. He lies on his bed, shaking and sobbing, the image of his mother's foot crushing him burning into his mind.
Linda stands up, still puzzled by the squeaking toy. She looks around the floor, searching for any other unusual objects. Finding nothing, she shrugs and continues on with her day, unaware of the terror she had just inflicted on her own son. Jack's world has been turned upside down, and he will never be able to look at his mother the same way again. The trust and love he once felt for her are replaced by fear and mistrust. He wonders if he'll ever be able to tell her what happened, or if he should even try.
