A humble wagon made its way down the dirt road. There was nothing particularly special about the wagon; just a single horse pulling a wagon that had two passengers. One passenger was the driver of course and sitting next to the driver was a bona fide goddess. There was nothing to suggest that the young woman sitting next to the driver was a goddess. She was wearing the ordinary clothes of a traveling nun. If someone were to take a closer look at her they might see the tail sticking out of her dress or even her wolf ears....which admittedly looked like fox ears from a distance.
In the back of the wagon was a small pile of fur pelts from various animals covered by a simple piece of cloth.
The weather had remained undecided of what it wanted to do since morning. There had been periods of rain followed by sunshine for perhaps a hour then it was back to rain.....and right back to sunshine. For the moment, though, it was partly cloudy...not quite overcast. This meant the simple dirt road was part mud throughout the day making travel painfully slow.
One might think that the wolf goddess would make the weather behave itself but, of course, she wasn't that sort of goddess. Holo the Wise Wolf had no power over the weather, no spectacular powers.....well, unless you count her ability to turn into a gigantic wolf which she needed to change on occasion. For the moment Holo was in her human form. She was idly brushing her tail that was in her lap. The tip of her tail rested partially in the lap of Kraft Lawrence who was a merchant and owner of the modest wagon.
Holo glanced behind the wagon to see rolling hills and the forest the the road skirted. She removed her hat revealing her ears. The ears were perked up. Lawrence glanced sidelong at his companion.
"Are we being followed?" asked Lawrence who preferred being called Lawrence than his actual first name.
"Who would want to travel on a day like this?" asked Holo, sounding disgusted. "If we get caught in another mud puddle...."
"What?" asked Lawrence raising an eyebrow. "You'll do what?"
"I do not know" said Holo returning to brush her tail. "I have to think of a proper punishment for you"
"Remember the autumn festival in the next town is starting tomorrow" said Lawrence. "I don't want these furs to go to waste. I can make plenty of money with these"
The two were silent for a couple of minutes.
"What is the next town called again?" asked Holo.
"Darro" said Lawrence. "Supposedly it's a relatively new town. As I understand it, the town is barely five years old"
"Really?" asked Holo sounding mildly interested.
"According to the news I have on Darro, it's also the home of some kind of new wheat that's been discovered"
"New type of wheat?" Chuckled Holo. "Impossible. I would know if there was a new type of wheat"
"Yeah, I have a hard time believing that rumor" said Lawrence frowning slightly.
"How far is it?"
"We should be coming on it plenty soon" said Lawrence.
Holo reached behind her for an apple but her hand failed to find one. This made Holo turn in her seat and lifted the cloth that was covering all the fur pelts. There weren't any apples left. Holo's stomach growled.
"Hungry?" asked Lawrence.
"Starving" said Holo. "It feels like forever since lunch"
"Hold on for a little longer" said Lawrence. "We---"
A howl from the nearby forest interrupted Lawrence. It was quickly answered by several more howls. The howling of wolves no doubt about it.
"It's getting that late?" asked Lawrence glancing up at the sky. It was hard to tell the time of day due to the broken sky above. After careful searching Lawrence saw a clear patch of red-orange sky. It must've been early evening.
