At the local headquarters of the bounty hunting organization, Police Company, one of they’re youngest and perhaps most powerful employees was sitting down, looking around herself curiously. Natsuki was a half cat, half human monster; that tended to act more cat then human. Her feline instincts showed themselves in nearly everything she did, from walking to eating to fighting. If her cat like tendencies could be ignored, she could of easily passed as a full-blooded human, save for her cat ears and tail. Her ears poked out from atop a mop of dark green hair and her tail swayed above her rear end, sometimes standing strait in times of stress or anger. She wore the typical Police Company uniform, which was designed after the old uniforms worn by police in the olden days. She did diverse her uniform from everyone else’s, by wearing her shirt with out sleeves and putting on a mini skirt that was far too small even for their companies regulations. Long black stocking covered most of her legs, although she was trying to have that changed. She had spoken several times with management to be allowed to show her legs bare, but had been turned down many times. It mostly had to do with her fellow employee and former partner, Batanen, who was known for his lecherous side and would no doubt be distracted by that much leg. So, during work, Natsuki was forced to wear the black stocking, but once she was off duty, you bet your bottom dollar they were off in a flash.
“Good morning Sakura!” Natsuki cried out as her partner walked in the door. Sakura, who was about ten times Natsuki’s age, stared at the bundle of energy that was her partner and grumbled something unintelligent. It was barely eight and the girl had enough energy to power half the city. She hated eager creatures.
“Good morning to you two sunshine. We wouldn’t happen to have a lazy morning ahead of us that could include a short nap?” Sakura could really use a nap right now. The kids had been over at a friend’s house last night and she and her husband, Sakunoshin, had made a night out of it. Sakura wasn’t one to kiss and tell, but she would divulge to anyone that asked, that her samurai husband was very good with his sword, incredibly good.
“Nope, we got a busy morning.” Natsuki replied, missing the disappointed look on her partners face. “We’re heading back to the lakeside to look for that criminal that has been eating all those girls.”
With a groan, Sakura sat down and rubbed her temples. “There is no such criminal. All the missing girls were either eaten by different criminals or left the city. If you believe what the press is saying, this guy has eaten over a dozen women without being identified once. Have you ever heard about a criminal being able to snatch even two women off the street, eat them, and then walk away without anyone noticing their bulging belly?”
“No,” Natsuki said apprehensively.
“Exactly, someone would of seen him and his big stomach, even if he hid in the shadows. I can’t believe we’re even having this discussion. If you don’t believe me, then ask Kondo. She’s been out there three nights looking for this guy and she didn’t see anything. Hey, where is Kondo?” Sakura asked, failing to see the monster-hating woman at her desk. It was too early for her to be out on a mission, so where was she?
“No one knows where she is. She didn’t show up this morning and she isn’t answering her phone,” Natsuki said. She suddenly became afraid. Her emerald eyes filled with fear. “Maybe the Lakeside Swallower got her!”
“Psst, like that could happen,” Sakura said, with a sigh. “She’s too tough to get eaten by anyone, her taste alone would make them gag. Most likely she’s at home, shining up her guns, like the crazy gun nut she is.”
“Your wrong, the Lakeside swallower got her!” Screamed a voice from behind the two bounty hunters. The two turned to see a young boy, maybe thirteen or fourteen. He had spiky brown hair and a pair of goggles on his head. He was a stringy little guy, with thick legs that he had gotten from years of soccer. He was panting and had his fist clenched.
“Who are you and how do you know Kondo’s dead,” Natsuki said cautiously. She had never seen this boy before and didn’t know if she could trust his word. The boy looked up at them, his big chocolate eyes big from excitement.
“My names Davis, I’m on vacation from my world.” The girls listened, not caring who he was or where he was from. They did care when he stuck out his hands. In one hand, he had a pair of white shoes and in the other a gun, with the name Kondo Naoko engraved on the barrel. Sakura took it from the boy and looked at what she was holding dumbly. Kondo loved her guns; she would rather lose an arm then lose her gun. The only thing that could cause her to leave her gun was if she was unconscious or dead. The boy in front of them had said it was the latter.
Sakura rushed the small boy pinning him against her desk with her forearm. “Okay talk, how did you get this?” Sakura was in no mood for games. Kondo, one of the toughest girls here was in danger and this punk knew something about it. Natsuki tried to calm her partner down, but inside she was even more frightened. Kondo had been her friend and she knew exactly how tough the girl was. If the Lakeside Swallower had gotten her, he was even stronger then they originally thought.
“I saw something walk away, it had a big belly and that’s all I could tell. Whoever it was, they left these things behind. I may not be too smart, but I can figure out what happened.”
Sakura looked hard at him, looking for any sign that he was lying. After a moment, she let him go, and pushed him towards their boss’s door. “Tell him everything,” she hissed and the boy nodded quickly. Sakura turned to Natsuki and they shared the same thought. The Lakeside Swallower was real and they had hit one of their own women. Natsuki looked away, remembering something else she knew. There were more otherworlders out there, hunting this criminal, what chance did any of these teams have against someone that had taken on their best and beaten them?
