"SEPHIROTH!!!!!!!"
Her normally soft and gentle voice was filled with anger and hatred as Tifa took Sephiroth´s Masamune with her smooth hands and pointed it toward him, who was standing at the entrance to the chamber Jenova´s body was being held in. At that moment, Tifa didn´t even realize what was so special about this place Sephiroth sought out to go. There was only hatred, buried deep within her heart after the most recent events. Unknown to her, this very place, the Nibelheim Mako reactor, indeed was of great significance for Sephiroth. Not because of all those strange pod-like chambers being placed all around the stairs that lead to the entrance to a larger chamber, with the name "JENOVA" being written over it. Those pods might have scared Tifa to death in a normal situation, considering that there were monstrous creatures, apparently former humans, being held in a greenish liquid as guinea pigs. That would have been another proof for Shin-Ra´s inhumanity, experimenting with innocent humans, but Tifa couldn´t care less. Thus she also did not care about the main reason for Sephiroth´s presence here: the chamber he was standing in front of, the chamber were Shin-Ra had placed Jenova´s body.
Jenova...practically, it was the cause of Tifa´s entire despair. Because of some irregularities within the Mako reactor, Sephiroth, the legendary first-class member of SOLDIER, Shin-Ra´s battle unit, as well as another highly regarded member of SOLDIER, Zack, and some Shin-Ra MPs had been sent to Nibelheim in order to take care of that matter. After a dangerous journey through the Nibel mountains, they reached the reactor, and what they found there changed everything. Not only those terribly disfigured creatures in the pods, but also and especially Jenova. As Sephiroth saw the name Jenova being inscribed over the entrance to this large chamber, it nearly broke his heart, for there was one small detail that made this discovery extremely painful: Jenova was the name of his "mother", or at least of the person he considered to be his mother. He quickly concluded that this "Jenova" was also a part of this experiments, and that made him feel uneasy. As he went back to the village of Nibelheim, he made his way to the Shin-Ra mansion that had been occupied by Shin-Ra researchers. There he read through the research notes that were located in the basement library, and this was practically the event that ultimately decided about Sephiroth´s fate. He found out that Jenova was believed to be a member of the Ancients, a powerful race, similar to humans in almost every way except for the fact that they actually hold incredible abilities that allow them to talk to the planet and use its powers for good. But the Ancients almost had been extinct 2000 years earlier due to a catastrophe that was actually caused by Jenova itself. Sephiroth falsely believed that, based on the Shin-Ra researches, Jenova was just an Ancient, and he her "son". In fact, Jenova was an alien life form that came to the planet thousands of years ago, first pretending to be one of the Ancients, but then causing a disease that drew almost all of them unto madness, with many of them dying a horrible death. Only the few surviving Ancients were able to seal Jenova away in the Northern Crate, until that day. But Sephiroth believed that he was now the only remaining Ancient, and that the humans betrayed the Ancients 2000 years before. He also failed to realize that he was in fact the son of Hojo, the head of Shin-Ra´s Science Research Division, and Lucrecia, a fellow scientist of Hojo. The interesting fact is that Hojo injected Jenova´s cells into Lucrecia´s womb, and therefore Sephiroth was born with overwhelming abilities, making him a powerful entity even early in his life. Sephiroth wasn´t the only human whose genetic structure was modified with Jenova cells, though. All those creatures in the Nibelheim reactor actually were the results of these sometimes lethal, in any case horrible experiments.
With the new yet partially false knowledge of his origins, Sephiroth completely lost his mind. Enraged and psychotic, he left the Shin-Ra mansion in order to get back to the Mako reactor and "free" his mother. In the process he burned down the entire village of Nibelheim and killed nearly all its inhabitants...including Tifa´s father.
Surely it was one of the most horrible events - if not the most horrible - in Tifa´s entire life, as she saw her village being swallowed by the flames and went over the Nibel Mountains, searching for Sephiroth and, most importantly, her father. But having reached the reactor, very well hidden in the mazes of Mt. Nibel, she saw her father down on the ground, bleeding from his chest and already dead. She put her arms around him, hoping that he was still alive, but there was nothing she could do. Knowing that, she collapsed onto the ground and broke into tears. Now, everyone she cared about was dead. Her mother died of a lethal disease when Tifa was only eight years old. Although that fateful and traumatic event almost cost her life back then (due to an accident that had something to do with Tifa trying to get over Mt. Nibel, having been told as a child that the souls of dead were traveling over those mountains and thus hoping she could find her deceased mother there, she fell into a coma for several days), her father lovingly cared for his beloved daughter. They even grew closer to each other than before, since they lost a caring mother and a loving wife. But now, they were both gone. Her mommy, her daddy...both were dead, and she would never see them again. On that day, Tifa lost everything dear to her, her father and her hometown.
After several minutes of moaning the death of her father, she dared to look up again, and she saw Sephiroth´s Masamune sword on the ground, next to her father and covered with blood. Her father´s blood. Tifa´s despair immediately changed into blind anger and hatred, and so she took the sword and ran into the reactor, ready to face Sephiroth and to avenge her father´s death. No, not only her father´s death. Glenn´s death as well...her beloved friend. He has been living in Nibelheim for only a short while, and yet he grew close to Tifa quickly. Tifa never had a friend like him before, and the closest thing she had to such a friend was Cloud Strife, but he left the village years ago to become a member of SOLDIER. Even so, Glenn was different. He was not an exceptional boy, he was not physically strong or extremely good looking, he was just an ordinary boy, or so it seemed. Behind his normal appearance were magnificent abilities in terms of magic-usage hidden, unlike anything Tifa had seen before. Using materia was a breeze for him, and therefore he was able to cast all kinds of spells with ease. Of course it wasn´t why Tifa felt so emotionally attached to him. Because behind his normal appearance, he revealed a gentle and kind soul to Tifa, something she rarely saw in her life before. She could talk with him about simply everything, and whenever she was sad, he was there to cheer her up. But on that day, she had to witness his death, or at least his supposed death. As she was trying to reach the Mako reactor via Mt. Nibel in order to find her father there, she saw Glenn facing Sephiroth in the far distance, obviously attempting to stop the psychotic warrior. Before he could even use any spell, Sephiroth used the lack of space on the mountain path they were facing each other on wisely and quickly dashed toward Glenn, thrusting him with his Masamune, or at least it seemed so from Tifa´s position, as she was too far away to see their fight properly. She could only see the two opponents and the results, not the details. And the results made her face turn pale: Glenn lost his balance due to Sephiroth´s attack and stumbled backwards, eventually falling off the mountain path and into the depths of valley of Mt. Nibel. After that, Sephiroth quickly continued his journey to the Mako reactor, while Tifa couldn´t go on for several minutes. The shock of Glenn´s death was too much for her to bear, and she fell onto the ground and cried. At that moment, she still hoped for her father to be all right, which quickly turned out not to be the case after that.
So Tifa lost two important persons in her life in one single day, by the hands of one single man. Being a strong and determined girl, she was hell bent on preventing Sephiroth from hurting more people, and thus she attempted to put an end to his life once and for all.
And so she faced him in the chamber where the creatures in those strange pods were resting, with Sephiroth standing in front of the entrance to Jenova´s chamber. Sephiroth didn´t pay much attention as Tifa yelled his name. Standing with his back to her, he slightly turned his head to see the girl a few meters down there at the stairs, holding his Masamune. He must have forgotten it at the corpse of that foolish man, but whatever. Such a girlie would certainly not stop him.
"Why did you do all this?! Why did you kill my father?! Why did you kill Glenn?! Why...why did you destroy my life?!"
As Sephiroth didn´t even react to Tifa´s words and turned his head back to the entrance, attempting to open the door that would lead to his "mother", it was enough for Tifa. Screaming in anger, she rushed up the stairs, ready to slash Sephiroth with his own Masamune. Unfortunately, his knowledge in terms of using that weapon prevented her from succeeding. Shortly before the sharp and deadly blade could hit Sephiroth, he quickly grabbed the girl´s hands and disarmed her. Having the Masamune back in his possession, he made things short by hitting Tifa´s chest with the lethal blade. The beautiful black haired girl didn´t even feel the pain as she fell down the stairs, hitting the cold, metallic ground with her back. She was breathing heavily, and she could barely keep up her eyelids. So that was her destiny...to die on the same day as her father and her best friend...At least she would see all those she loved again. Or so she thought.
Tifa could not remember what happened after her confrontation with Sephiroth, only some strange pictures remained in her memory, pictures of which she thought as signs for her getting away from the gates of the underworld her surroundings were representing to her and into the abounding lights of heaven.
But Tifa would not die. Not on this day. Fate obviously had other plans with her, for someone she knew all too well arrived at the scenery, several hours after Tifa suffered from these fatal wounds. Sephiroth was already gone, as well as those certain members of SOLDIER. Only Tifa´s body remained there, with her back against one of the pods.
"TIFA!"
An old man ran toward Tifa´s lifeless seeming body, quickly kneeling down next to her and trying to find out whether she was still alive.
"Her heart...it´s still beating!"
The old man was visibly relieved, as Tifa was really close to her. It was Zangan, the man who taught her the ways of martial arts, a highly respected master, having dozens of apprentices all over the world, although Tifa was not only his most talented, but also his most beloved apprentice. She was like a grand daughter to him, and he really cared about her. So it was a shock for him to see the poor girl suffering from this fatal wound.
"Don´t worry, Tifa, I won´t let you die!"
With these words, Zangan put his right hand on her chest, and soon, Tifa´s skin began to glow with a greenish light: the martial arts master was obviously using a materia in order to heal her wounds. But it seemed that his powers were not effective enough, as the wound did not disappear or got less critical.
"Damn it!"
Angry at his inability to help his beloved apprentice, his mood changed quickly as he heard footsteps behind him.
"Do you need some help, Zangan?"
Zangan turned his head to see Glenn, Tifa´s friend, in all his glory.
"Glenn! You...you survived that catastrophe?!"
"..."
"Where have you been all the time?!"
"That´s not important. But I´ve been searching for Tifa."
"Looks like you came at the right time at the right place!" he said, pointing with his hand at Tifa´s body.
"Tifa..." Glenn whispered as he approached her body and sagged at the knees to her right side, with Zangan being to her left.
"Sephiroth did this to you, didn´t he?!" he said, with obvious hints of anger in his voice.
"Yes, he did. And her father..."
"I know. I saw his corpse at the entrance to the reactor. Tifa...one man destroyed her life completely...but you didn´t gave up. You wanted to fight till the last moment, my brave angel."
"But her life will not destroyed completely if we do something now! We can still save her!"
"Yes, of course. That´s what I intended. Tifa...I shall not allow your bravery to be in vain!"
Glenn took a quick look at a small, brown pocket that was being attached to his belt. some of his materia were being placed in there, although it seemed that he didn´t even need them anymore in order to use magic. It was as if magic was a part of his entire existence, like the birds flying or the fish swimming, something that was natural to him. Although there were few spells he could not cast without materia, he was able to use most of the known and needed magic, and even more.
So both he and Zangan put their hands on Tifa´s chest, giving it another try in order to save the girl that was equally dear to both. While her chest was being covered in the greenish light again due to the magic the two performed, Glenn could clearly hear Tifa whispering his name in pain, something that gave him the drive to continue his fight for her survival.
After several minutes both of them stopped, taking a look at Tifa´s state, and to their joy, her wound disappeared.
"We did it!" Zangan exclaimed as he sighed with relief.
"No, not yet."
"What?"
"There´s something inside her body that is still threatening her life."
"What are you talking about?!"
"I...I can´t explain it now. But we have to move quickly in order to prevent the worst."
Zangan had no idea what Glenn was talking about, although it was crystal clear to the powerful magic user. He could truly embrace the aura of evil emanating from inside Tifa´s body, and Glenn was sure that Sephiroth´s attack on Tifa caused her more pain than just the wound they both saw. It changed something inside her, and it was most definitely dangerous for her. But there was no way Glenn could destroy the evil entity or whatever it was (Glenn didn´t understand himself WHAT it was, despite himself feeling the aura of evil), yet he could prevent it from harming Tifa´s body from within or even destroying the girl.
He opened his pocket, revealing his "tools" for saving Tifa.
"What...is that?"
"The only way of saving her." Glenn simply replied as he showed Zangan what he was planning to do.
