Haruko had walked over to the three people that had entered the room with the outpost. The three people were all surveying the damage done by the strange fungus that was growing on the walls and floor. Haruko's attention was on the ferret who had spoken that was on the shoulder of one of the two men.
"I'm new also" said the woman coming over to Haruko and shook her hand. "I'm Lucrezia Noin"
"I knew a Lucrezia" said Haruko. "although it was his surname if I recall. It's been quite a while"
The man with the ferret came over. He had short crab-like hair. The man had features that made him look young but Haruko could somehow sense that the man was far more older than he looked; perhaps it was the way the man carried himself or the subtle lining on his face.
"I think Lucrezia is an enchanting name" said the ferret on the man's shoulder. He looked like an ordinary ferret. Noin eyed the ferret with a slight frown.
"Stop buttering up Noin, Chester" said the man with the red hair as he petted the ferret on the head. Chester, the ferret, seemed to take great offense at this gesture as the ferret tried to avoid from being petted. The man continued, "she just ain't interested in you"
"She just doesn't get my animal magnetism" replied Chester who had scrambled onto Noin's head. Noin made to grab Chester but the ferret jumped onto Haruko's shoulder.
"I've seen many strange stuff" said Haruko who looked more amused than angry. "but I never saw a talking ferret before"
Chester stood at attention as he spoke, "I'm one of the immortal vermin. Of course I can talk. We can all talk"
Haruko blinked. "The immortal what now?"
"The immortal vermin" repeated Chester proudly.
"His origin is....unique" said the man with the red hair. "oh, where are my manners? My name is Hakubi"
"And I'm Sanchez" said the other man coming over. "I see that you're pregnant, Haruko. When is it due?"
"He" said Haruko who grinned widely. "oh, any day now"
Sanchez made a face and then looked around, and sighed. "No point in staying here"
"Yeah," said Chester. "let's go. This place is giving me the creeps"
"Saids the immortal" said Noin.
"Hey, immortals can be frightened too, you know!" snapped Chester. "and, being immortal doesn't mean I can't die...I'm just sturdier than most"
"Let's just go before anyone else shows up" said Sanchez.
Hakubi nodded. "I'll take point"
Haruko, Hakubi, Noin and Sanchez all walked out of the room and wandered down the seemingly endless hallways. Haruko had taken a journal made by some member of M.E.G. and was skimming through it to learn more about the mysterious Backrooms.
"I'm guessing one of you has a map" said Haruko after the four of them had been walking for about two hours. "these hallways are beginning to look all the same to me"
"I know where I'm going" said Hakubi.
Hakubi had entered a long corridor with very few fluorescent lights on the ceiling. Hakubi seemed a lot more weary and alert than before as did Sanchez and Chester. The talking ferret was currently on Noin's shoulder. Haruko was the last to enter the corridor.
"How long have you been in here?" asked Haruko.
"Watch your corners, Sanchez" said Hakubi. Then he turned to Haruko and continued, "Oh, I've been here for a year, maybe a little less"
"Two years for me" said Sanchez who was now armed with an axe.
"Three weeks" chimed in Noin.
"A whooping ten years" said Chester as he sniffed at the air. "this room is clear, folks"
Hakubi relaxed as did Sanchez but Noin remained on alert. The group made their way to the other side of the corridor and entered a wide-open corridor that also had fewer lights on the ceiling. The corridor was so wide that twenty people could've walk abreast comfortably. The corridor was quite a long one. At the far end of the corridor was a doorway that led into a patch of darkness.
"Where are we going?" asked Haruko glancing up and down the wide-open corridor. One end of the corridor led to the patch of darkness while the other way was more of the same drab scenery.
Hakubi pulled out a device much like a Kindle or similar tablet. He turned on the gadget and scrolled through several options and screens before coming to an expansive map. The map was labeled with other outposts. The map was a labyrinth of long hallways and sudden dead-ends. Some of the hallways double-backed on themselves and, in one instance, even triple-backed. It was all a chaotic mess that made little or no sense at all. Most of the labelings on the map had the logo of the M.E.G overlayed on them. The M.E.G logo was that of a bird with outstretched wings. One outpost had the United Nations insignia.
"My mother's lab" said Hakubi after consulting the map for a long moment. "it's the closest sanctuary to us"
"Your mother...?" asked Sanchez in a faint voice.
"You have something against my mother?" asked Hakubi. There was no heat in his voice. If anything, he sounded amused.
"Not really" replied Sanchez. "your mother is an acquired taste"
Hakubi made a noncommittal sound as he started to walk towards the patch of darkness, quickly followed by the others. They walked in a loose diamond formation with Haruko taking up the rear.
"I don't understand on how I got here" said Haruko after several minutes of silence had passed. "I went to sleep and then I somehow ended up in this place"
"You noclipped through something" said Hakubi.
"Noclip?" asked Haruko.
"That's the official term" said Hakubi.
The group made it to the patch of blackness and then turned left down a short hallway.
"I never did like that term" muttered Chester.
"We all made it here that way," said Sanchez. "I was on my way to a birthday party down the street when I suddenly slipped through the street"
"And I was on my way to a local restaurant I like" put in Hakubi.
"I was in the Sanc Kingdom to escort Relena out of the country that was under attack" said Noin. "took a few steps from my mobile suit and then I ended up here"
Chester hesitated before speaking. "I was looking for a friend of mine somewhere in a city called Venus Harbor"
"That's... not what I wanted to know" muttered Haruko.
The short hallway had a hallway that led off to a room that had what looked like a huge vent on the far wall as well as a different pattern to the drab wallpaper. The group ignored the room and continued on for another half hour before coming to a door that had a small window on it.
"Last time I was here," said Sanchez. "I got caught up in this maze of horrors that'll give The Backrooms a run for its money"
"Ah, yes" said Hakubi. "My mom does that for Halloween; she calls it The Eight Worse Hells"
Hakubi knocked on the door three times before opening the door.
The room the group entered was quite a bit larger than the outside hallways. It was equal parts organic and the mechanic. The main area seemed to be a very wide veranda that overlooked what looked like a forest. There were numerous ways off the veranda including a staircase that led down to the forest itself.
Haruko whistled. "Very impressive"
Hakubi nodded as he walked to a floating cushion in front of a transparent terminal of some sort.
"Make yourselves at home" said Hakubi.
"Don't mind if I do" said Haruko, grinning away.
