Yayaoi explained that an evil spirit has an energy source. If the kill the spirit there would be cursed energy left behind meaning it can reform again. There was also a chance that even if you destroy the source, if the evil spirit is still alive, it can regenerate it's source elsewhere but only occurs in high class evil spirits.
