Something had invaded the Bebop. What exactly had invaded the space-faring vessel home to small-time bounty hunters was unclear. Maybe it was an alien organism. Maybe it was a mutated creature that had wandered into the ship without being detected or noticed by anyone. Maybe it was some kind of genetic experiment that had escaped from a lab....or maybe it was something left in the fridge for a whole year.
What it was wasn't that important in the grand scheme of things. The point was that something was on the ship that caused the people it touched to fall into a coma.
Spike had ejected the fridge he suspected was the source of the creature that had attacked everyone on the ship. Even Ein had been attacked. But Spike was attacked by the blob-like creature which had been hitching a ride on the fridge just before he could eject the fridge. The black blob had jumped on Spike, leaving a mark on his neck before it disappeared up the corridor.
Some ten minutes after the fridge had been ejected from the ship, the blob creature slowly approached a sleeping Edward who was floating in mid-air due to the ship's artificial gravity having been turned off. There was nobody left awake to turn back on the artificial gravity.
Edward woke she heard something coming up the corridor. Then she saw the creature. She hesitated before reaching out to grab the creature. The creature wasn't fast enough to either get away or attack. Edward had snatched it up and examined the creature with sleepy eyes.
"Pudding..?" asked Edward. Without thinking she tossed the creature into her mouth. She chewed on the wriggling creature three or four times. It really did taste like pudding. Edward then swallowed the creature.
"Ed can't eat anymore...." mumbled Edward going back to sleep.
The creature landed in Edward's stomach. It spent several fruitless attempts to escape back up the throat. It was hopeless. It couldn't escape the fate of being digested, although it did take an extraordinary long time for the creature to fully dissolve in the stomach.
Once the creature was fully dissolved and digested by Edward's digestive tract was where a mutation occurred within Edward. It seemed that the creature had been, indeed, been some kind of mutated creature. The mutation wouldn't manifest itself until Edward awoke.
"Ed?"
Edward opened her eyes to see Jet looking down at her. The gravity must've been switched back on because Edward was no longer floating in the corridor.
"She's alive after all" said Faye who stood besides Jet.
"Of course Ed is alive" said Ed climbing to her feet. "Ed was just sleeping. Ed is glad to see Jet and Faye-Faye is still alive too"
"It seems we all got over being poisoned by whatever it was" said Jet gesturing for Edward to follow. Ed, Jet and Faye walked down the corridor which led to the main area of the ship. Ein had been lying on the couch but the dog rushed up at Edward when she entered the room.
"We never found out what poisoned us" said Jet.
"I still think it was some kind of creature" said Faye.
" it doesn't matter" said Spike entering the room. "We'll be landing on Mars in just over two hours"
Edward was surfing on her computer, diving into the net when the hunger hit her. It was a mighty hunger.
Edward looked up from the computer taking off the VR googles she used when she was net-diving.
"When do we land, Faye-Faye?" asked Edward to Faye who was lounging on the couch reading a magazine.
"Twenty minutes" said Faye sounding genuinely bored out of her mind. " Why do you ask? "
"Edward is hungry" said Edward.
"I am too" sighed Faye. "There's never enough food on this barge"
Edward then felt a crazy urge to eat Faye-Faye. Faye-Faye would make an excellent meal.
